J. Technical services in libraries, archives, museum.
Net users use hugely Web 2.0 tools and mobile communication devices to discover information resources. Discovery happens everywhere, but on library portals. Librarians should realize that the needs of the new generations (Net Gen) are fast changing and should reconfigure library services and collections in order to accomplish these needs. They should learn how to position their libraries in the flow: leisureflow, researchflow, learnflow.

Indexação de audiovisual na Biblioteca de Artes da Unicamp: avaliação da terminologia.
Oliveira, V.F.F.
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The indexing of audiovisuals, subject of this investigation, is based on the indexing policy of one Library Information Unit, supported by the characteristics and goals of this Information Unit and on the identification of clients. The need to evaluate videos of arts’ indexing in an art and multimedia university library and the searching of methodologies for vocabulary control has led to this research. For this, it was selected a sample of videos of arts in the following genres: documentaries, movies and animated videoart. After, it was performed a search in a database to collect terms that were used for the indexing of each video. In addition, it was
presented the synopsis of selected videos with the terms attributed by indexers for the analysis of three judges, professors of art history. Fifty terms were evaluated, and the judges added new fifty one descriptors and nineteen names of artists. From this, thirteen terms were considered
unsuitable for the items indexed; one term was considered inappropriate for the area terminology; from the new terms added, thirty-six refer to geographical, chronological or historical modifiers. A handbook was created to guide the indexing and control the vocabulary.

Quick cataloguing as well as poorly controlled importation of bibliographic records from a variety of sources made the videotape collection in the CERN Library difficult to use. We describe the working processes for the complete rearrangement of the collection, which have allowed for simpler searches and more precise results, clearer records, dynamic links on the Web, and links among the documents related to the videos.

The photography, from produced by the central Administrations like generated by independent photographers and the fans has originated a comparable documentary explotion to which it ocurred with the traditional document to XX century. The guard and conservation of this documents of modern support guarented to the scientific reaserchs circunstances that escape to the written ideas and complement the references that interest to the history of the institutions. It´s necessary to learn to read the iconic text like one takes control of the lingustic text, and to evaluate and to select the photograph documentation criticaly because the indiscriminate guard like the inadvertent destruction is a danger for a documentation that is part of our audio-visual memory.

Los derechos de autor en las obras multimedia y su repercusión en las bibliotecas

HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The application of the new technologies is creating new types of documents, such as multimedia works. These are easily reproduced thus encouraging copyging and distribution which in turn results in copyright infringement. Legislators from different countries have taken action by gradually introducing measures to adapt to the changes that are taking place and which use existing international treaties on the subject as a point of reference. Libraries affected by these new legislative measures tread on difficult grounds since they are trying to find the right balance between the right of the authors and the right of access to information. This has brought about that library associations such as IFLA take action steps by carrying out surveys on the extent of this issue.

La documentación sonora en los sistemas de información documental de los medios audiovisuales
Caldera Serrano, Jorge
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The characteristics and peculiarities in the processing of audio documentation by television companies’ document information system is shown. These document information systems consist of processing units for audiovisual documentation, photograph-based newspaper documentation, written documentation, and audio documentation. The latter is an important element within any television company’s document-related machinery. The control of audio information is as important as audiovisual information in the provision of either music, sound effects or voice inserts when required by journalists since it helps in the presentation and optimisation of television resources. Guidelines are presented for the implementation of the processing and management of sound documentation for television. This processing and management is not necessarily identical to that carried out by other media such as radio.

The MatPromo database was created in October 2002 as a project of IFLA’s Management & Marketing Section. The objective of the project consists of creating a database of images of objects and documents designed for promoting all kinds of libraries in any country. The images are described and are accessible through a user-friendly interface for searching internationally. The aim of the database is to facilitate ideas for promotional campaigns of library services. The database is hosted on the project server of the University of Barcelona’s Department of Library and Information Science (http://bidoc.ub.es/pub/matpromo/) and a link to it is made available from the web of IFLA’s Management & Marketing Section (http://www.ifla.org/VII/s34/). This article attempts to introduce MatPromo and explain its technical characteristics, content, and usefulness for librarians around the world.

Wunderkammer Cyberspace? Gestaltung und Rolle digitaler Museumsinformationssysteme illustriert anhand der medien.matrix am Technischen Museum Wien
Huber, Leonhard
DM. Museums.
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
This thesis aims to define and evaluate the role and design of digital information systems in museums. In order to do this, the study addresses the following topic areas:
the tasks of museums as institutions for the public, the conception of digital information systems and the interdependencies between content structure and graphic
design, illustrated by a practical example.
Experiences made by European museums in digital media projects have served as a starting point. The report investigates the role of digital media as information
mediators by looking at Human Computer Interaction and compares different models and structures used for computer-based information provision. In a second part, the thesis outlines the practical use of several theoretical aspects
mentioned by presenting the design and evaluation approach carried out during the conception of the medien.matrix, a digital visitor information system at the Vienna Museum of Technology.
The most significant results of the investigation can be summarized as follows:
Museums primarily have an educational task to fulfill. Virtual information spaces cannot replace real exhibitions but can rather complement them, the only exception being virtual (online) museums, which lack physical objects. A graphic design can only provide didactic support if the content basis is clearly structured.
The thesis concludes with some thoughts about the resources and factors which are vital for a future knowledge society.

From a user-centered and task-specific perspective on relevance, we studied the relevance criteria used by teachers - an understudied but important group - who were searching for materials to use in the classroom to support learning on a particular theme. We observed teachers planning lessons and searching an archive of videotaped Holocaust survivor testimonies; the archive was
created by the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation who interviewed 52,000 survivors and systematically cataloged the resulting testimonies. The teachers used a collaborative process to design lesson plans
and search for appropriate testimony passages; they employed an array of relevance criteria that pertain specifically to teaching. The objectives implied in their criteria correspond to the teaching objectives described in lesson plans and teacher interviews, including connecting with students, representing diversity, and teaching tolerance. Our findings suggest user-oriented design approaches that support retrieval of instructional materials and collaboration in line with the needs and knowledge of teachers.

Prospettive di sviluppo dei sistemi di documentazione visiva per l'Arte e l'Architettura
Raieli, Roberto
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Visual Retrieval (VR) is a specialized area inside the more comprehensive Multimedia Information Retrieval (MMIR) field. VR is “content-based” and related to digital images databases, not “term-based” as the bibliographical databases: VR methods allow to get images through specialized tools (colours, parts, shapes, etc.). Even if a good level of item retrieval is possible through VR systems, traditional subject cataloguing and use of specialized thesauri enhances search and retrieval.

Audiovisuelle Bestände in Österreich : Eine Bestandserhebung unter Berücksichtigung von Sammlungen außerhalb spezifischer Archive

JH. Digital preservation.
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The aim of this thesis is to create a quantitative overview of the current stock of audio and video materials in a selected number of institutions, and to show where the strengths and weaknesses, concerning digitalisation and long-term conservation, are. Another goal is to give a general overview of regional differences, how the institutions develop their collections, how the holdings are conserved for future availability and if they are available for everybody or for specific user-groups only. A summary at the end analyses the status quo of the selected institutions, and identifies problematic areas and future prospects in this field. The inquiry is concentrated on a selection of 110 archives, museums and collections all over Austria. The study was done by mail questionnaire, some with call back or additional personal interview.
In conclusion, it was found that a lot of institutions in Austria are not digitizing their holdings, some do not know about the importance of digitisation at all and the possibility of long-term preservation is not provided. A couple of institutions do not even know about the dimension of the audio-visual stock in their archive. In most of these cases, a shortage of staff and lack of financial aid are the reason for this situation.

A tecnologia QuickTime VR
Mortensen Steagall, Marcos
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Traditionally, virtual reality systems use powerfull 3D computer graphics to model and render virtual environments in real-time. Traditionally too, virtual reality systems use 3D computer graphics to model and render virtual environments in real-time, and his approach usually requires laborious modeling and expensive special purpose rendering hardware. The rendering quality and scene complexity are often limited because of the real-time constraint. This book presents a new approach which uses 360-degree cylindrical panoramic images to compose a virtual environment. The panoramic image is digitally warped on-the-fly to simulate camera panning and zooming. The panoramic images can be created with computer rendering, specialized panoramic cameras or by “stitching” together overlapping photographs taken with a regular camera throught its nodal point. Walking in a space is currently accomplished by “hopping” to different panoramic points. The image-based approach has been used in the commercial product QuickTime VR, a virtual reality extension to Apple Computer’s QuickTime digital
multimedia framework. This aplication uses cilindric 360º panoramas to build virtual enviroments, endeed, images.
This software was chosed for the experiments related with this research cause it has all necessary ability to produce virtual enviroments image-based. This text describes the architecture, the file format, the authoring process and the interactive players of the VR system. In addition to panoramic viewing, the system includes viewing of an object from different directions and hit-testing through orientation-independent hot spots.

Observes that Kendra Sahithya Akademi and Sahithya Akademies for different languages existing in the States of India are having a vast and unique collection on Indian literature and culture and also studies on those topics done all over the world. Most of these Akademies are accepted research centres of the universities for concerned subject areas. But their collections remain unorganised with poor facilities and insufficient staff. Many of the documents in their collections are rare and if lost will be lost for ever to the humanity. Based on an evaluation of the Akademies the study makes recommendations for computerisation of their catalogues and the bibliographies of regional languages and literature they publish, development of electronic database of writers of each language, digitisation of rare documents existing in them as well as applying ICT for improving their overall functioning. Opines that modernising the libraries Sahithya Akademies of the country and also digitally archiving the records they hold will enable the universities doing research on language, literature, culture and allied areas to have the most reliable and authentic knowledge source available for their reference. It will also be an act to conserve our cultural heritage.

The changing role of the user, that gradually shifts from a passive consumer of information towards a pro-active user that reorganises and manipulates data, has an increasing impact on traditional information retrieval. A multitude of practical and methodic questions rise as popular web-applications such as blogs, RSS and social bookmarking tools allow users to create and share metadata about online resources. This article tackles these issues in the particular domain of visual cultural heritage. Online image databases increasingly offer users possibilities to annotate and comment on images of interest to them. But what is the pertinence of these user contributions? How can their quality be evaluated? Concretely, our article starts with an introduction to the phenomenon of user-generated metadata by presenting the social tagging of cultural heritage images and the practice of publishing users’ comments. Secondly, a case study presents an analysis of users’ comments within the image database of the National Archives of the Netherlands. Based on these empirical data, conclusions and generalizations outside our specific case study are formulated.

Mobile Digital Radio: Eine Chance für den digitalen Hörfunk durch bestehende Mobilfunktechnologien?
Strik, Yoshi
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The digitasation of radio is at a stage of underdevelopment in most European states. Standards like Digital Audio Broadcasting are commercially available since 1995, but penetration rates are still insignificant. This thesis aims to define a certain form of digital radio named Mobile Digital Radio – also referred to as Mobile Streaming Radio – and to evaluate it in relation to technical and economical criteria. Technical issues, like GPRS, UMTS and Streaming, which are prerequisites for Mobile Digital Radio serve as a starting point. In addition, information on other digital radio standards and judicial conditions for the operation of a Mobile Digital Radio service is given. Furthermore, existing business models, illustrated by Best Practice concepts and interviews with experts, are investigated in order to prove the hypothesis: Mobile Digital Radio offers added value to endusers in comparison to other forms of radio distribution. Following this concept, the thesis addresses mobile operators, which aim to strategically position themselves in the field of Mobile Music, as well as radio stations in search of new channels of distribution. The main findings suggest, that Mobile Digital Radio offers way more possibilities to enable value added radio services than other digital radio platforms. The use of existing network infrastructure keeps costs to a minimum and the adoption of streaming technology allows provision of nearly countless programs. Moreover radio stations are not restricted to geographical boarders. Besides the availibilty of a feedback channel makes promising applications possible, ranging from interactivity and personalisation to m-Commerce transactions.

In this paper, we will attempt to analyze the mechanisms and dynamics of the coming cultural revolution, focusing on the «artistic space» where the revolution is taking place, on the interactions between the artistic act and the space in which the act takes place and on the way in which the act modifies the space and the space the act. We briefly discuss the new category of «electronic artists». We then highlight what we see as the logical process connecting the past, the present and our uncertain future. We examine the relationship between art and previous technologies, pointing to the evolutionary, as well as the revolutionary impact of new means of expression. Against this background we propose a definition for what we call «Alive Art», going on to develop a tentative profile of the performers (the «Alivers»). In the last section, we describe two examples of Alive Artworks, pointing out the central role of what we call the "Alive Art Effect" in which we can perceive relative independence of creation from the artist and thus it may seem that unique creative role of artist is not always immediate and directly induced by his/her activity. We actually, emphasized that artist's activities may result in unpredictable processes more or less free of the artist's will.

This paper presents several case studies and focuses on good practices concerning the creation of digital content. The technical, methodological and economic elements of the digitization projects, which the University of Cyprus Library undertook in co-operation with other academic libraries and counterparts, are also presented. The projects concern the digitization and documentation of archives and collections of printed and audiovisual material, which aim at the preservation of cultural heritage and simultaneously in setting the infrastructure for knowledge management. Through the digitization practices, problems and solutions are demonstrated in three complementary levels. a) The technical level (choice, convertibility of formats and metadata, complementarity of management tools). b) The methodological level (followed procedures and standard) and c) The organisational level of co-ordinating the libraries collaboration (ensuring continuation in the development and the availability of digital content, avoiding repetitions and overlaps, accumulation of efforts, saving resources). Through the presentation of the technological and methodological choices followed for the digitization projects of the University of Cyprus Library useful practices are demonstrated and the needs are identified concerning Academic Libraries collaboration in their new fields of activities.

This thesis gives an overview on German film libraries, film archives, and other libraries with film information stock. Questionnaires were sent out to different institutions that deal with film in a broader sense. The methodic approaches for this study as well as the overview of film information stock in Germany, resulting from this analysis, are well documented. A number of non-German film institutions have been surveyed and described to compare handling of information stock in Germany and abroad. The presentation of informational institutions is followed by the attempt to systemize the different types of institutions and their various focal points in stock.

Semantic Visual Features in Content-based Video Retrieval

A new semantic visual features (e.g., car, mountain, and fire) navigation technology is proposed to improve the effectiveness of video retrieval. Traditional temporal neighbor browsing technology allows users to navigate
temporal neighbors of a selected sample frame to find additional matches, while semantic visual feature browsing enables users to navigate keyframes that have similar features to the selected sample frame. A pilot evaluation was conducted to compare the effectiveness of three video retrieval designs that support 1) temporal neighbor browsing; 2) semantic visual feature browsing; and 3) fused
browsing which is a combination of both temporal neighbor and semantic visual feature browsing. Two types of searching tasks: visual centric and non-visual centric tasks were applied. Initial results indicated that the semantic visual
feature browsing system was more efficient for non-visual centric tasks.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that annotation is an important part of human reading behavior in both printed and electronic environments. Annotation in the electronic environment requires special support due to limited media
affordances. We have witnessed continuous improvement of annotation functions in some electronic reading environments, such as text documents in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat and images in Flickr. However, comparatively
little research has been conducted to understand people’s needs for making annotations when they watch videos, let alone work to develop tools to support their needs. With the increasing use of videos in many aspects of our lives, from
professional activities to personal entertainment, by not only specialists but also general consumers, there is need for more efforts on designing annotation facilities for video navigation and manipulation devices. This study focuses on video annotation in a learning environment. We studied how people in a teaching assistant training class annotated videotaped instructional presentations. We
attempted to understand the value of annotation in achieving their learning objectives and how video annotation functions helped in supporting their tasks. The results of this study provide implications for video annotation system design.

The management of the digital image.
In the present article the questions implied in the management of the digital image are exposed on a general way. This supposes to consider so much the formal and logical aspects like the technical aspects, as well as the respective technological implications. The first reflection at the moment for raising the subject happens to clarify the nature of the digital image, essential fact to determine our responsibility like managers of the patrimony. It seems that of natural way it has been integrated to our “photographic” patrimony, although is not unquestionable that its nature includes it of irreprochable way within this category. In any case, the debate is open and they do not lack arguments to consider the digital image within the evolutionary process of the photography or like an appendix of this one. To the margin of those considerations, that although are fundamental do not prevent us to advance in our task, the introduction of the digital image in the contemporary society, and by extension in their centers of memory, implies some significant changes in the management. Tasks like the conservation, the selection and the diffusion, differ in certain aspects of the traditional methodology. If in addition we extend our intention to the implication of the New Technologies in the treatment of the image (photographic or digital), the changes are already of certain magnitude and need an important methodologic revision. The description, the administrative control, the classification and the indexing potentially increase to the possibilities of operation and management of the bottoms, simultaneously that make the creation inevitable of standards of reference to international level. It is important therefore, to define parameters that facilitate the rules of work to us for an suitable treatment of our bottoms and collections.

This article tries to analyze, from the perspective of the Department of Documentation of "La Vanguardia", the changes in the management of the image in the last years. These changes are associated to two projects of different reach and complexity carried out recently: the centralized management of the image for production uses and the digitization of the images archive of "La Vanguardia". These projects have had a significant impact in the organization and make possible at present to access to all graphical archive from many points. The aim of this article is not to describe with detail the processes of management of the images, but to comment how the difficult has been the balance between the production needs of the newspaper and the management of the images archive.

The cinema for Otlet: a document “substitute of the book”

A. Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information.
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
In science, films are an important aid for presentation, demonstration, documentation, and/or information. They serve to expose any subject by means of the word and the images; a scientist can keep in his drawers (i. e., an archaeologist) reproductions of all his acts and objects relative to its science and to analyze them in depth, without having to move, the slow or fast motion serving to evidence facts and to understand phenomena that before were incomprehensible (insect’s flight, medical applications, sports, etc). In education the most expressive method is the cinema, that reproduces facts and objects and facilitates by mean of drawings and schemes to understand phenomena. It is difficult to classify film because it can simultaneously be a documentary, scientific, educative and even commercial. The main characteristic of scientific films is derived from the presence of the word, sound, movement and colour.

The synonymy between source and origin, so clear for the journalists, it is not so for the scope of documentation. However, the task of documentalist is to offerg determined services to concrete users, reason why the adaptation effort will have to come from the information professional and not from documentalist, which does not have to derive in a carelessness on the part of the documentalist of its functions from trainer of good users. The formation of the user has to be considered like an interaction of necessities (documentary and to document) and not like an attempt of adaptation of user and its demands to our limitations, essentially intellectual. For that reason, it turns out to us somewhat complicated to get to discern what the concept of intelligence source is for journalists, considering source the individual or group that offers a certain information in a while, on a unexpected form or with premeditation, and in many cases treachery, making the communication with a certain aim (clear example is the information spilled by the press cabinets); also the generating geographic area of noticiables facts is considered like source in a while determined.

In the information access act many variables, among these ones are legislation of author rights referred. Accessibility is conditioned by diverse factors that affect both, publications since their appearance, where chain of documentary access begins, and libraries, like suitable medium for access, or personal users, where chain finishing.
In this paper we will write about management made, until today, between Pontifical Catholic University of Peru Library’s Managers and the Office in charge of author rights: Indecopi. By legislative decree 822 (April 23rd, 1996), Peruvian libraries and archives may only loan “write expressed" documents to their users, e.g., it prevents the loan of documents with images or voice digital and/or mechanically fixed. This restriction harms libraries work and represents a legal obstacle for the information access, knowledge and recreation of Peruvian libraries and archives users.

Animated tutorials have now become so commonplace that there are even a few wikis out there to index them. But when can you find the time to learn how to deliver this new elibrary service? Forget trying to learn techniques specific to one product or another. Instead, learn an entire approach to online library instruction. From the librarian who created the How to Use Google Reader tutorial, which has been viewed by 1,200 people and received a thank you card and gift from Google, is a tried and true formula for delivering online library services that is part of a concept she calls being an Electrified Librarian. The Electrified Librarian’s approach to creating online animated tutorials is to combine the pedagogical approaches of multiple intelligences theory, instructional design and constructivism to deliver effective online library instruction. It’s not about using the right bells and whistles. Learn how to create online animated tutorials the Electrified Librarian way!

El reto de la digitalización del archivo sonoro en los servicios públicos de radiodifusión. El caso de Catalunya Ràdio

JG. Digitization.
This paper offers an approach to the implications of digitising a radio station's audio archive, based on a case study of the public broadcaster Catalunya Ràdio. Beyond the unquestionable importance of factors such as technical equipment, software or standards of compression, and storage and indexing, the conversion of an audio file into binary code has other implications that are briefly reviewed. The essential parts of this process can be summarised as follows: changes in professional profiles and production routines, the integration of languages, and the possible universality of documentary resources.

The number of information systems that are accessible through the Internet is constantly increasing. Information systems on those systems are getting varied and occupy more space, too. Up until a few years ago, only textual information sources were accessible via computer networks, whereas today multimedia information sources containing graphics, sound, pictures, and animation are also accessible over the Internet. Geographic information systems, electronic libraries, film and TV archives can be given as examples of multimedia information sources. We point out that information retrieval should be seen as an integral component of the computer networks, and technological, economic, and legal problems in this field should be solved. We end up with what should be done to improve the library and information services that are accessible through the Internet in Turkey.

Expression of cultural heritage looking from the informatics angle falls into text, images, video and sound categories. ICT can be used to conserve all these heritage items like; the text information consisting of palm leaf manuscripts, stone tablets, handwritten paper documents, old printed records, books, microfilms, fiche etc, images including paintings, drawings, photographs and the like, sound items which includes musical concerts, poetry recitations, chanting of mantras, talks of important persons etc, and video items like archival films historical importance. To retrieve required information from such a large mass of materials in different formats and to transmit them across space and time, there are several limitations. Digital technology allows hitherto unavailable facilities for durable storage and speedy and efficient transmission / retrieval of information contained in all the above formats. Hypertext and hypermedia features of digital media enable integrating text with graphics, sound, video and animation. This paper discusses the international and national efforts for digitizing heritage items, digital archiving solutions available, the possibilities of the media, and the need to follow standards prescribed by organizations like UNESCO to enable easy exchange and pooling of information and documents generated in digital archiving systems at national and international level. The need to develop language technology for local scripts for organizing and preserving our cultural heritage is also stressed.

The Library of the University of Macedonia participates in the project ACCELERATE (ACCESS TO THE MODERN LIBRARY SERVICES FOR THE BLIND AND PARTIALLY SIGHTED PEOPLE) which was launched in January 2000 and is funded by the European Union in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci 1999 Program. This project aims at providing access to modern library services for the visually impaired users: students, faculty members, researchers etc. The latest technological achievements can make quality services available to users with sight problems allowing them to access every source of information in a modern library. The latest results of this project and the experience acquired by the Library are presented in the fields of: a) adaptive technology, b) the initiation of new services within the Library's operations, c) the development of administrative supportive structures by an academic institution, and d) the training of users with sight problems and the library personnel as well, in the adaptive technologies and services. Finally a framework of integrated services customized to the reality of Greek academic libraries is proposed; this would not only apply to visually impaired people but to people with other disabilities as well, such as hearing and movement problems.

It is a generally acknowledged fact that the Academic Library pays the greatest attention to the organization, presentation and use of printed documents and materials. In the modern production of information sources, a significant and remarkable number of documents are provided in audiovisual and non-book materials. The development of technology in computer science, in photography, in image processing, as well as in digital technology have resulted in the production of a large number of documents and information sources in audiovisual patterns.
The basic need for the collection of audiovisual materials in the Academic library is derived from its educational role. The Academic Library, by providing members of the Academic community with materials of all forms, contributes effectively in the educational process, by improving and providing knowledge. The abstract focuses on the presentation of audiovisual systems, non-book materials, including their particularities, in the Academic Libraries. It also centers on the approach to library processing as well as the presentation of useful evaluation implementations and operation instruments for users and librarians.

Historische Filmeditionen im Internet-Zeitalter
Carlson, Christopher N.
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Historians have conducted a controversial discussion regarding the value of film as a source material for some time now. At a minimum, it is necessary that the applicability of audiovisual media to historical research and teaching be validated by a comprehensive analysis and documentation of the materials' provenance. Copyright and privacy rights issues must particularly be taken into account. Moving picture databases enable indexing and annotation much better than was previously possible. Online presentation tools also facilitate a more multi-faceted and nuanced understanding of research results. This essay endeavours to demonstrate the possibilities now available using examples of recent historical film editions. New technical platforms provide additional support for multimedia-based knowledge representation.

Improvements in telecommunication infrastructures along with software developments allow faster and more effective interaction between users. This is so in the health care sector, where the correct and rational use of new technologies can improve the relation between doctor and patient, hospital and users, and between patients and others affected by similar health problems.

La IAML e la documentazione della musica a livello internazionale
Gentili Tedeschi, Massimo
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
IAML (the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres), founded in 1951, is structured in professional branches,
thematic committees, working groups about specific problems. It carries on an outreach activity, to materials and helps training qualified staff in the so called "developing Countries". From his foundation, IAML has started various projects with other international associations (specifically the International Musicological Society), producing musicological and bibliographical repertoires: RISM (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales), RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale), RIPM (Répertoire International de la Presse Musicale), and
RIdIM (Répertoire International d'Iconographie Musicale).
From the 50's, IAML has published the Code international de catalogage de la musique, and the Terminorum musicae index septem linguis redactus. IAML co-operates with the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in developing cataloguing standards and formats, like the bibliographic description standard ISBD(PM) and the UNIMARC format, proposing new tags maintaining code tables for music cataloguing; nowadays new perspectives are open by information retrieval and by multimedia retrieval.

Claves y retos de la documentación digital en televisión
Agirreazaldegi-Berriozabal, Teresa
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Television is becoming digital, as are TV archives and archival research. Digitisation of previously archived footage is a slow, expensive process that requires significant public funding. This fact, together with new technological developments, favours the opening of major archives to the general public (BBC, INA, B&G, etc.). For TV stations, digitising and media asset management (MAM) systems offer new tools and generate a new work environment, both for reporters and archival research.

Posibles escenarios para industrias digitales

This article describes three possible future scenarios for digital contents industries, that is, for companies that generate, process and distribute information in electronic form. Those scenarios have been named “traditional”, “literati” and “mobile”, respectively. Scenario definition is being done from an analysis of the offer and demand existing in the digital contents market. The role of different economic agents operating through the value chain is analysed from the offer side, while the attitude of users towards the technology is considered from the demand side. Finally the importance that for the development of such scenarios will play future technologies and devices to access information, specially those of mobile nature, is highligh

The universe is an artifact, the work of the cosmic architect. Culture is also an artifact, the product of human nature and thought. Items of cultural heritage include the ecosystem, the conditioned natural resources, its inhabitants, their creations like text, image, sound, performing arts, sculptures, buildings, ornaments, utensils and the like and well as the knowledge related to them. Most of them are built up or created from the sweat and blood of the common people. So the heritage items are the common property of the whole population the region. It is the greedy and wealthy minority who in the name of industrialization and development, which is beneficial only to them, are destroying the heritage and from this what the majority will get is only one time return as employment for a short period. But the majority is selling the wealth of all their future generations, their life support systems. So heritage conservation is a common man’s requirement. The paper examines how ICT can be utilized to document, watch and manage, and create awareness on heritage items including natural resource, knowledge, text and a wide varieties of artifacts of great value that help to sustain life.

HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
IH. Image systems.
IA. Cataloging, bibliographic control.
After an initial discussion of the problems presented by image and video indexing as compared to text indexing, the authors describe some of the basic techniques for automatic video indexing. The content-based retrieval paradigm and some automatic methods for segmentation and key-frame identification are further described. Certain low-level parameters for identifying an image are also introduced. The authors discuss the drawbacks of such automatic methods based solely on the image and give examples from projects using accompanying nformation as well, such as audio and captions. The article concludes by pointing out that the use of standards, like Mpeg-7, can promote the development of new and richer applications based on video.

Characteristics Shared by the Scientific Electronic Journals of Latin America and the Caribbean

Our objective is to analyze the use that Latin American peer-reviewed journals make of the tools and opportunities provided by electronic publishing, particularly of those that would make them evolve to be more than “mere photocopies” of their printed counterparts. While doing these, we also set out to discover if there were any Latin American journals that use these technologies in an effective way, comparable to the most innovative journals in existence. We extracted a sample of 125 journals from the LATINDEX – Regional System of Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal – electronic resources index, and compared along five dimensions: (1) Non-linearity, (2) use of multimedia, (3) linking to external resources (“multiple use”), (4) interactivity, and (5) use of metadata, search engines, and other added resources. We have found that very few articles in these journals (14%) used non-linear links to navigate between different sections of the article. Almost no journals (3%) featured multimedia contents. About one in every four articles (26%) published in the journals analyzed had their references or bibliographic items enriched by links that connected to the original documents quoted by the author. The most common form of interaction was user↔journal, in the form of question forms (17% of journals) and new issue warnings (17% of journals). Some, however (5%) had user↔user interaction, offering forums and response to published articles by the readership. About 35% of the journals have metadata within their pages, and 50% offer search engines to their users. One of the most pressing problems for these journals it the wrong use of rather simple technologies such as linking: 49% of the external resource links were mismarked in some way, with a full 24% being mismarked by spelling or layout mistakes. Latin American journals still present a number of serious limitations when using electronic resources and techniques, with text being overwhelmingly linear and underlinked, e-mail to the editors being the main means of contact, and multimedia as a scarce commodity. We selected a small sample of journals from other regions of the world, and found that they offer significantly more nonlinearity (p = 0.005 0.1), interactive features (p = 0.005 0.1), use of multimedia (p = 0.04 0.1) and linking to external documents (p = 0.007 0.1). While these are the current characteristics of Latin American journals, a number of very notable exceptions speak volumes of the potential of these technologies to improve the quality of Latin American scholarly publishing.

Propuesta de alfabetización visual para estudiantes de educación básica apoyada en recursos hipermediales. Un aporte a la comprensión lectora
Villa Orrego, Nora Helena
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Frequently, teachers invest a great deal of time in promoting the comprehension of verbal texts by students as a fundamental part of the teaching-learning process, and relegate the accompanying images to a second place. This attitude is associated to a traditional conception of reading comprehension, in spite of the fact that images occupy a salient place in current information sources and that in many occasions they carry information different to the verbal texts. This article presents the basic rationale over which studies regarding visual literacy were initiated and analyzes the impact of a proposal for visual literacy in reading comprehension. Finally, it describes the technical aspects that were taken into account in the elaboration of a hypermedia environment designed specifically with the purpose of favoring the reading of images in elementary school students.

The video production industry is currently working through an intermediate period between videotape-based and digital production methodologies. This confluence of old and new technologies presents numerous challenges both in the management and retrieval of media content assets. This paper summarizes theoretical issues and examines how the Media Content Management Group at Microsoft Studios has integrated the timely and accurate collection of metadata into the larger video production workflow.

Información y documentación radiofónica: espacios para un interés común. La experiencia de Radio Nacional de España

DZ. None of these, but in this section.
EA. Mass media.
Radiophonic information includes three types of materials: music recordings, non-music recordings, and written material. Considering the qualitative rather than quantitative aspects of the extent to which different types of programs use them, the user needs range from the most general to the most specialized content. RNE, the Spanish national radio network, serves as a case study of the relationship between radiophonic information and documentation. The center for radio documentation, at the service of professional needs, plans the document chain based on typology and then addresses the need to respond to general as well as specialized queries. All of this occurs within the framework of new digital technologies that affect broadcasting as well as handling and preservation of information.

La formación de los gestores de contenidos periodísticos. Los documentalistas de televisión en el entorno digital

GI. Training.
The growth and proliferation of media during the past century and the present, seems secure for now the demand for professionals in the journalistic documentation, called with increasing frequency and perhaps more accurate, "information content managers”. The reform of the plans of study opens the possibility of modifying those discordant questions among the training of the professionals of the documentation, "managers of content" and their employment prospects, according to the real demands of professional profiles in the labour market in Spain. The digitalization poses challenges for the information units in television and for the professionals working with them, who should obtain a new knowledge and should develop new aptitudes in a relatively short term, if they want to face up successfully the change of the professional role, which they will have to carry out in this new environment.

This work aims to discuss how photographic document's specificity needs particular attention when those materials are integrated into an archive. For that, we propose to initially discuss the primary aspects that define an archival document to further on typify contemporary archives and how photographic materials began to be integrated by those institutions. That issue requires a reflection about the relations between photographic image representation and archival documentary authenticity; and between photographic image representation and the alleged "veracity" of the photographic information. The clarification of the problems posed by that discussion achieves the existent contrast between the two main organization models for photographic pictures in archives: by issue topics (of librarian inspiration and greater use) and by context (more adequate to archives). The archival contextualization arises, many times, as the only alternative for the comprehension of dubious images, images with illusion effects, or with extremely generic information. Finally, we present examples of archival organization for the three types of archival photographic materials occurrences: photographic pictures integrated to other documents (e.g. in a dossier); isolated photographic pictures as a final result of an action (e.g. pictures of a public agency’s communication office); as well as photographic pictures gathered as a collection, without any organic relation to an administrative producer. We conclude that archival principles, mainly in the case of photographic picture in archives, are most of the times the only guarantee to a correct comprehension of documents’ meaning.

Concerning many problems founded on the imagetic records organization, I intend to discuss the specificity of such material. The solution adopted by Brazilians archivists usually analyzes and organizes the records based only on the images subject description, abandoning the motives that were responsible for their generation as a record. Brazilian examples on holdings of this kind of records are put under suspicion when they are collated with the principles posed by the Archival Science. I assumed that archival records (writing or imagetic ones) are, in first place, registers of an administrative action, preserved to prove that this action was made instead of ready-made sources for historical research.. In my proposal, the production context, as a directive to the archival organization, comes as a fundamental issue, capable to guarantee the comprehension of the imagetic record genesis, the identification of subjects, as well their utilization on the historical research. The argumentation, mediated by the discussion on the application of some methodological references posed by the tradition of the Warburg Institute, puts the general issue on a relational perspective.

Difusión y vinculación de contenidos multimedia en entornos

Sobrino Bescós, Francisco

BH. Information needs and information requirements analysis.
In general, publication of multimedia content such as video, in mass media such as the Web, it is not complicated for organizations due to the current state-of-art of this technology and, most of all, because of the increasing number of available websites on the Internet, which in some cases offer this kind of services for free. However, after the experience in designing a website for an autonomic parliament like Cortes de Aragon, it has been observed that the simple publication of the content might not be enough for a parliament institution; where besides communicating the purpose is to create awareness about the institution. At that time it might be of interest to link the multimedia content through hyperlinks to the rest of available information on the parliament’s website. Two goals can be reached: first of all to improve the parliamentary contents in line with current trends and secondly to facilitate internal and external users the retrieval of legislation-related videos by surfing the web.

It focuses on audio-visual databases from a double perspective: on the one hand, the database as “archive” and, on the other, copyright aspects relating to the sources and different categories of the materials contained within the archive.

Introduction

HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The present work of documentation in the field of music was published in book format by the National Printing Office of Portugal in 2003. Its first section, which refers to eight (8) centuries of documented music in Portugal, registers the works by composers who either lived or composed in Portugal during this period of time which were recorded in compact disk worldwide until 2000. Technical details of the pieces, the recording, the instruments used for the recording, and/or the disk notes are provided when available. The second section of book identifies each compact disk published worldwide in which one or more pieces by a composer who either lived or composed in Portugal is or are included. The third section of the book provides biographical data on composers who lived or worked in Portugal during the period of time under scrutiny, independently from having or not having any work recorded in sound. This third section was elaborated with a basis on the biographical dictionaries available as well as on various other secondary sources of information, both published and unpublished. The fourth and last section of the book provides, to the best realistic extent, the postal, telephonic and electronic addresses as of the year 2000 for the recording labels of the compact disks registered in the former sections of the book. The methodology used for the construction of this book/database is discussed at length and in detail in its extensive Introduction, and it is commented upon by Doctor Owen Rees of Queen's College, University of Oxford, in the Preface. This work of documentation is written in Portuguese and English.

F. Management.
Due to the foreseen increase in the amount of audiovisual footage to be received by the local municipal archives from the audiovisual sector it is deemed necessary that a compatibility policy for the management of said materials be devised for two key issues: the making use and integration of documentary analysis obtained from the original cataloguing organisations, and the maintenance of their current range of services, including the footage to be used in audiovisual production. Likewise, the characteristic features involved in footage analysis are reviewed, in both digital and analogue archives.

Internet has become an alternative source used by journalists due to cover and enrich their news, since IT tools have provided a quick and useful process to include digital material in the production of news. The authors of this essay have monitored the total of Internet pictures, sounds and websites included in the main news programs of TVE (TD1, TD2 and La 2 Noticias), and have written a register of the captures made from this kind of material in the company server to verify their origins. Moreover, the authors analyzed which areas of the press room (distinguishing among Culture, Society, Sports, International and National information) resort to the web for their news more frequently; which functions they give to this audiovisual material (if it’s the main subject of the news, if it’s complementary to the plot or fact of the news or if it hasn’t got any connection with the contents); and, finally, the quantitative importance internet pictures have in the total of the sample studied. From the results obtained, the authors consider the ethical and legal problems underlying this procedure in the production of news, and if the use of Internet audiovisual material is justified for a national news program, reminding that the quality of the pictures and sounds are usually worse than the rest of the sources used. Finally, the authors set out which of these sources could be reusable and so that they would have to be kept in the archive of the company and, on the other hand, which of them cannot be kept because of their low quality or doubts about their copyrights. The essay is closed with some conclusions about the current situation of the work made in the press room studied, related to the tendencies and usual work dynamics with this new and immature proceed.

Television archives are engaged in a significant process of transformation involving everyday functions and procedures as well as their overall role in media organizations. The confluence of two elements produces this change: the complete digitization of the flow of production and the fragmentation and decentralization of the audio-visual market. The determining factors are identified, along with the risks and opportunities that media professionals must channel toward the development of a new model of audio-visual content management based on access and the hybridization of tasks and skills.

Tecnología, convergencia y cambio: un viaje sin retorno
López-De-Quintana-Sáenz, Eugenio
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Some changes are taking place in the traditional functions of archives and documentation departments in the mass media companies. The new functionalities of the digital production systems and a general context of economical contraction and organizations downsizing, are enhancing a redistribution of tasks based on productivity and company profitability. Some indicators of this process are presented in this paper and also it is described how this change could impact on the definition of the new professional profile of the information managers in the mass media companies. Based on the analysis of a functional axis of nine main sections such as archives managing, information selection, searching or cataloguing, an estimation is also provided on how each one of these competences could be moving towards other professional communities to share with, along as other new tasks also shared and arosen in this digital environment.

Current Trends in the Structure and Contents of TV News
Pestano-Rodríguez, José-Manuel
HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
The traditional television works with audiovisual codes, a set of specifics rules which have been negotiated with the TV audience for a long time in order to be able to decode audiovisual contents properly. The traditional television news takes part in this negotiation process, in which the linear discourse has priority. This discourse appears in the whole TV program, as well as in each one of the different pieces or news. These structures have been changing throughout the time until the present forms we expose here. We can perceive similarities and differences between the main TV networks in Spain. At the same time, we can observe the most significant changes these structures can have in new digital television expectations, such as the interactive television.

This paper presents the preservation measures in the film and video archive of the Swiss Television (Schweizer Fernsehen, SF) in its historical dimension. It tries to give a historical summary of the development and the awareness of an archive and of collection strategies at the SRG SSR idée Suisse as well as at the Swiss TV.
The first part of the paper gives an overview of the preservation and archive policy of the SRG since 1970 considering the large amount of source material. The second part puts a specific focus on transfer-projects running at the Swiss TV since 1995. The presentation of the saving of the film and video collection rounds out the preservation history of the Swiss Television.
In the practical third part a historical grid for the collection of broadcasts was developed. A scheme is presented, with which the specific information in the areas of recording, indexing, transferring for each collection can be saved. With a sample collection and a cost-benefit ratio a possible realisation of the conceptions is finally validated.
Further remark:
The following version is an excerpt. The third part (chapter “historical grid”) was left out because the including information is just of interest and relevance to the Swiss Television.

Digitalisation of the documentary heritage of Eusko Irratia (1996-2008). The Eusko Irratia (Basque country, Spain) digitalisation process began in 1996 when it started to archive documents in digital format. The main value of the archive resides in the historical programming and the digital musical library. The historical programming includes the most interesting interviews, reports and programmes, and it forms the historical memory not only of the radio but also of our town, from 1982 to 2008. The digital music library is the result of the laborious work of digitalising vinyl records, CDs and analogical tapes.

IE. Data and metadata structures.
In this paper, we present an e ffort to semantically map VRA Core 4.0, a cultural heritage metadata schema describing visual resources, to CIDOC CRM. This work is based on a semantic integration scenario, where CIDOC CRM acts as a mediation schema. More speci cally, each element of the schema (along with its subelements and attributes) is mapped to the equivalent CRM path (represented as a sequence of classes and properties). The mapping is formally described using a Mapping Description Language (MDL), which explicitly de fines semantic rules from the source schema to the target schema.

La música en la comunicación publicitaria (Music in the advertising communication)

HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
Most of the advertisers communicate their brands, values and ideas betting clearly to music as the most outstanding component of the advertisement soundtrack. To manage
the advertising music as an object of study, we should classify and arrange the various musical shapes that are used by the advertising, in order to understand the reasons that composers, agencies and advertisers impose their decisions and so understand the evolution and current status of the advertising music. Spain, as a country with a great advertising
development, is a good sample of this
evolution

HH. Audio-visual, Multimedia.
This investigation is result of a previous theoretical work presented in this magazine in 2009, the Music in the Advertising
Communication. Now, the study of contents presents the result of a pioneering research of 2.346 television spots of different national Spanish channels in prime-time
schedule. In Spain, 9 of 10 television spots include some kind of musical component in their final format, similar results to research done in different countries and different periods. However there are significant differences in the musical shape used to communicate the product, as well as in the styles and musical genders on which those musical shapes are based on and its relation with the kind of product or announcer.

The present work investigates if the music in the advertising promoted by the Institute of the Woman - public entity of Spanish area with more than 20 years of history - expires with different own functions: to thrill and to serve as support to the images and to the message; if the subject matter of the advertisement determines the typology of the music; and if the above mentioned announcements are remembered by the soundtrack. The study offers a global vision of the composers' intentions, creative and of the own Institute of the Woman, in his institutional speech across the advertising music.
