Within the framework of the agreement signed by UNAM and Google in 2007 to digitize the National University's collection of books, there needs to be a means of promoting UNAM's Biblioteca Digital (BiDi-UNAM), which has been digitizing its collection of bibliographic holdings dating from 1950 to the present. The early experiences of BiDi-UNAM, the use of its technical resources and staff, and its policy of open-access e-book production should be considered as a case study for the new digitization project (the 2007 agreement).

L'e-Publishing in Italia nel 2001 : a che punto è la riforma dell'editoria? The article examines the two laws recently approved by the Italian Parliament, no. 62 regulating publishing and no. 248 regulating copyright, and the way these may affect both
the off-line and the on-line publishing up to 2001. Provocatively, the author reads the new legal encadrement as dramatically insuffi cient to set to order the multifaceted and sometime thorny relations among all the actors of the publishing world; the law is thus seen as being altogether incapable of opening a true new course. Looking out on a wider perspective, the international context is also far from showing clear guidelines. Indeed, quite differently, contradictions do emerge when agents varying from public institutions engaged for open sources, publishers concerned with copyright protection, to newly-born information services needs are forcely bound to interrelation. The fast-changing publishing world is less and less bound to the fixity of print as it moves more and more towards electronic.

The “new documentary triangle” (where libraries occupy a central position because they have organic links with all the three sides) is a guarantee of a democratic access to information thanks to the universal availability of materials in open archives, of a qualitative selection of the most relevant contributions thanks to the publishing control made by the scientific committees of e-journals and of a universal bibliographic control thanks to the repertoire of bibliographies.

Ηλεκτρονικό Βιβλιοπωλείο

EC. Book selling.
HO. e-books.
Nowadays bookshops, the places where the commerce and circulation of books is conducted, have changed. Technology has a significant contribution to the evolution of bookshops, especially the web and the internet. E-bookshops are not confined by physical conventions, they are accessible by everybody and they facilitate the transactions of the e-consumers. They aren’t a shop in a building but a site on the internet. These developments had as a result the emergence of new terms and definitions of an e-bookshop. This work presents the features of an e-bookshop, its structures, the services that it offers to its customers and all the parameters which are essential to its “creation” and its functions. Finally, there is a brief presentation of the biggest e-bookshops internationally and in Greece and an introduction of a new trend, the e-books.

El uso cotidiano de los libros electrónicos
Pérez Arranz, Fernando
HO. e-books.
The appearance of electronic books will bring about a change, which will mean a lot more than the simple introduction of a new format as a medium for the transmission of knowledge. This drastic change will modify social behaviour and customs in the human act of reading and accessing culture. The concept of the traditional book had not changed since the medieval codex or the way we interact with it. Libraries, as the main intermediaries between cultural and society, will change some of their services with the adoption of this new electronic format.

La “nuova economia” del libro elettronico. Prospettive per una sostanziale qualità dell’informazione

HO. e-books.
A scholarly electronic publishing of quality not sight to the profit but to the circulation of the ideas. The strategy to adopt also for the distribution of electronic books is that one, parallel to the Open Source for the software, of the Open Content, in compliance with the licence Creative Commons with at least two relative restrictions: not to make derivative works of the text and not to make commercial use of the work outside of the channel of distribution controlled from the publisher. It cannot however be thought that an electronic book is bound to a format owner and one determined technological platform: the future is that one of a flexible system that guarantees the usability and full accessibility of the contents in the time.

Evolution of an Electronic Book: The Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography
Bailey, Jr., Charles W.
HO. e-books.
The Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography (SEPB) presents selected English-language articles, books, and other printed and electronic sources that are useful in understanding scholarly electronic publishing efforts on the Internet. Most sources have been published between 1990 and the present; however, a limited number of key sources published prior to 1990 are also included. Where possible, links are provided to sources that are freely available on the Internet. SEPB includes "Scholarly Electronic Publishing Resources," a selective directory of related Web sites, and the "Scholarly Electronic Publishing Weblog," a list of new resources. The primary version of SEPB is an HTML document; however, to facilitate printing, an Adobe Acrobat version of the bibliography is also available. This paper takes a detailed look at the development of the bibliography, and it presents cumulative use statistics for the period October 1996-December 2000.

This article presents the results from a recent survey into the provision of electronic books within academic libraries in the UK. Where relevant the results are supplemented by data from two other surveys concerned with e-book provision and electronic information services undertaken by the authors. Incidence of provision of e-books from individual publishers and through aggregators is reported. Reasons for non-provision and attitudes towards the medium are discussed, and issues concerned with bibliographical access are explored. The article concludes with a discussion of the role and influence of the E-book Working Group set up by the UK body responsible for networking and electronic resources in higher and further education: the Joint Information Services Committee (JISC).

In this article I examine one advantage of the electronic book in comparisation to the printed book: Because of the possibility to store e-books easily without great costs, they are not likely to go out-of-print. To examine this assumption the out-of-print-rate of hardcover-, softcover- and electronic-editions is compared over the last twenty-five years.

Elektronske knjige
Trifunović, Bogdan
HO. e-books.
The essence of the electronic book is in its digital form, an easy
exchange and possibility of its reading and searching through on more than one
device. This paper gives a short history of the electronic book, its base features,
format as well as its advantages and disadvantages as compared to the conventional
printed book. The phenomenon of the electronic book has not been
researched enough in domestic literature in view of the possibilities and perspectives
of such a transfer of information in the times of the omnipresent
Internet. One of the reasons is surely a weakly developed market of the electronic
book with us which shows, however, throughout the world a steady growth in
spite of the periodical crises which affect the information technologies and the
electronic industry. The libraries have one of the decisive roles in digitalization
of the conventional book for the purpose of its conversation, extending to the
insight of the general public and an easier use and exchange.

Reference Librarians use Electronic Sources Six Times More than Print Sources to Answer Patrons’ Questions

A review of:
Bradford, Jane T., Barbara Costello, and Robert Lenholt. “Reference Service in the Digital Age: An Analysis of Sources Used to Answer Reference Questions.” The Journal of Academic Librarianship 31.3 (May 2005): 263-72.
Objective – To test the hypothesis that electronic sources are used by librarians more often than print sources to answer questions at the reference desk.
Design – Use study.
Setting – Small, private university in the United States.
Subjects – Five full-time and two part-time librarians working at the reference desk for four months (two months in the fall of 2002, and two months in the spring of 2003).
Methods – The study recorded every question asked by library patrons during the two study periods, with the exception of non-library related directional questions and hardware problems. For each question recorded, librarians, while working solo at the reference desk, paraphrased the question and recorded the source(s) used to answer each question. Although questions were recorded regardless of source – in person, via email, or by telephone – the medium in which each question was asked and answered was not recorded. For the first half of the study period (fall 2002 semester), librarians kept manual records that were subsequently transcribed into a spreadsheet by a student assistant. In the second half of the study period (spring 2003 semester), the librarians entered data directly into a spreadsheet. The study’s data monitor (who was also a study participant) was responsible for ensuring the integrity of the data and for assigning a category to each source. The source category ‘librarian’ was problematic in that it was unclear whether or not the actual source of the answer was the librarian or a source located by the librarian. After the first half of the study, the procedure was changed to require that a reference librarian was to label a source used to answer a question as ‘librarian’ only if the answer came from a librarian’s own knowledge, and if it did not require consultation of an outside source. Categories were generated on the fly, as the data monitor reviewed the recorded questions and sources. By the end of the study, 23 categories had emerged. While all sources for answers were categorized, questions themselves were not. During the second part of the study, the gender of the patron asking the question at the reference desk was also recorded.
Main results –The results for the fall 2002 and spring 2003 semesters were similar. For the entire study period, librarians used a total of 3,487 sources to answer 2,491 questions. Sources fell into 23 different categories. The top 5 categories used to answer reference questions were databases (23.92%), librarians (23.6%), library catalogue (15.03%), internal Web page (12.27%), and reference books (9.38%). The top five categories accounted for 84.2% of all sources used. For 75% of the questions, librarians referred to a single source for an answer. Almost 60% of the sources used to answer questions were electronic. Of the internal Web pages used to answer questions, the library’s online journal title listings accounted for 76%. Reference books were used to answer questions in less than 10% of cases. Less than 2% of the library’s print reference collection (173 of 9,587 titles) was consulted to answer reference questions during the study period. The approximate 60:40 ratio of questions asked by female to male patrons corresponded to the university’s student body ratio.
Conclusion – The results of this study confirm the researchers’ hypothesis that librarians use electronic sources with greater frequency than they use print sources to answer patrons’ reference questions. The surprising finding in this study is the proportion (approximately one quarter) of reference questions answered by the librarians themselves, without the need to consult an outside source, either print or electronic. The study suggests that a large proportion of the reference collection goes unused in answering patrons’ questions and that librarians often answer a question using only a single a source of information. A reshelving study analyzing use of the reference collection is underway to supplement the results of the current study.

Positioning librarians as essential to the new Virtual Learning Environments

HO. e-books.
This paper discusses the explosion in the use of electronic resources by students and the development of e-books. The existing high usage will intensify as virtual learning environments (VLEs) become the primary means of interaction between students and universities. A brief outline of university library procurement in the UK is given, followed by an analysis of a recent ground-breaking tender for e-books for higher education libraries in the UK. The continuing development of a bespoke subject collection of e-books for nursing students is explored in some detail, as is the demand for non-traditional resources for the VLE. The paper closes by discussing the information architecture necessary to streamline and unify access to resources in the hybrid library, and to lay the foundation for an architecture appropriate to the electronic library.

Getting information to the public and our users : the OECD Experience
Raggett, Peter

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has opened a web site called SourceOECD that allows the purchase of its publications over the Internet. SourceOECD has the facility to allow clients to purchase parts of a publication, for instance a statistical table or even parts of a database. This allows much better precision for the customers than if they have to purchase the complete printed or PDF publication, the principle of SourceOECD being that our customers can buy online as little or as much as they need. It also allows them to download their purchases in advance of receiving a paper copy. This paper will demonstrate the practical aspects of using SourceOECD. The Centre for Documentation and Information (CDI) at the OECD embarked on a radical change of its Internet site in 1999 and since then has offered to its clients a desktop catalogue in HTML with thousands of links to electronic periodicals and relevant Internet sites. A brief demonstration of the CDI’s Intranet site and explanation of its evolution will be of interest to other librarians who are at either at this stage of development or are considering mounting their catalogue onto an Intranet/Internet site.

The invention of digital technology for information storage and retrieval is a milestone in the process of making formal communication flexible and transparent. It is only by harnessing digital technology the wealth of information, which is growing at an exponential rate, can be effectively managed. By developing capacious secondary storage devices like Compact Discs and hard disks, it is made possible to have digital libraries and digital publications. The present trend is to convert printed records into digital records – a situation comparable to the Middle Ages when manuscripts were converted to printed documents with the invention of printing. Nitya is a full text retrieval utility developed by CIRD (Centre for Informatics Research and Development) in Kerala for the creation and maintenance of digital libraries. The utility can be used for bringing out digital publications too. Nitya is created by interfacing UNESCO’s database management system CDS/ISIS and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Searching of the digital library and opening of the full text is made possible by this front end.

Information and Communicatin Technology is transforming the nature of our society in an unprecedented speed. New insights on work, production and commerce, management, wealth etc have made knowledge, information and connectivity a very important constituent of all these. Future society is predicted to be a networked one with totally different way of life. People will pursue occupations that they never have dreamed off in ways not familiar now. There will be no need for the people to go to offices for work. School will have an entirely different environment. Physical existence of higher education and research institutions will vanish at least for some subjects. In ICT based society some of the existing problems of environment will not be there. But new problems like electronic waste will come. The concept of borderless nations may become a reality and will change the nature of business. Local products developed with indigenous knowledge may find international market. The paper reviews the situation of Kerala in these contexts and the role and new areas of involvement for the information science professionals in the changing scenario. Kerala has already passed an IT Act and put in millions of rupees for Information Infrastructure Development during last five years.

e-Kitaplar ve Kütüphaneler
Akbaytürk, Tuba
HO. e-books.
E-book, in its broadest meaning, has been defined as a text accessible in electronic medium. Based on this definition, either a publication stored on a cd-rom or accessed through the Web can be considered as an e-book. These examples show that e-books actually have been available for years. The e-books, evolving over years, became texts readable on e-book readers. This evolution triggered not only the variation in the e-book readers, but also in the standards used. While a universal e-book standard has been emerging, different marketing trends have been taking place in the e-book market. Among those trends, the most significant ones are the distributors such as netLibrary, Ebrary, and Questia.
This paper will discuss the stages through which e-book has evolved, its latest situation, the primary distributors in the e-book market, their products and pricing policies, how e-books can be used in an academic library context and how library services will be affected, based on copyright issues and usage/access methods. Finally, the improvements in the foreseeable future will be discussed.

Accessibility must be another criterion in the purchasing of electronic resources in order for all users to exert their right of access to information. So, libraries and librarians must demand accessibility to the electronic resources providers, because only the own-made resources being accessible are not enough. Through the valuation of three well-known electronic resources (E-libro, Web of Knowledge and Cab Direct), the accessibility problems of all of them and the urgency of improving this matter is demonstrated.

The current subscription of e-books in libraries of the public Spanish universities is studied. The analysis is focused on the offered contents, the functionalities of platforms and the user interaction facilities. It can be noted that 36 of the 50 existing universities support the subscription of at least one collection of electronic books. The universities of the communities of Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia are those that have reached a greater implementation of this product. It is an emerging sector that needs a progressive acceptance on the part of the
scientific community. We consider that e-books will have a significant role in the new model of education supported
by the European Higher Education Area.

As stewards of their collections, libraries have a responsibility to ensure that the digitization agreements they enter into protect the public domain and provide for innovative uses of digital files beyond keyword searching. This article brings together a number of articulations of core library interests in digitization partnerships, identifies six key interests against which potential agreements should be evaluated, and urges libraries and their institutions to make full use of their leverage to ensure the global digital library is open and dynamic. A checklist accompanying the article suggests some of the questions negotiators might ask themselves as they consider their objectives in entering an agreement.

The most important and true function of deposition practices making a contribution to knowledge sharing at uppermost level is to make it possible to present philosophy and art productions of the country by depositing to the advantage of the researches of present and future generation. But, deposition practices dated back ancient times don’t include electronic publication types occurred by the development of information technology. However, in our present day, most of the philosophy and art productions are produced and used in electronic medium. It is necessary to include electronic publications in legal deposit and to deposit in a legal dimension in order to ensure registered cultural productions to be deposited completely.
Because electronic publications have differences in comparison to printed ones, it is impossible for electronic publications to be deposited by antedated legal deposits. These differences cause methods and techniques different from printed ones to be used for electronic publications at the ranks of acquisition, preservation and serving that form the process of deposition. Electronic publications are evaluated in two categories as online and offline.
Because offline electronic publications have physical transporters, they resemble to printed ones. However, online publications’ being different regarding their structural features make it difficult for them to be included in deposition process of online publications. The countries considering online publications as a part of cultural existence start leading project enterprises for the deposition of online publications in order to see the problems that will be come across in the deposition of electronic publications and responsible units clearly. When these developments have being occurred in the deposition of electronic publications at international level, deposition practices cannot be performed sufficiently in our country. The reason for this is to try to perform legal deposit providing only printed publications dated in 1934 to be deposited. However, all the online and offline electronic publications as well as printed publications form a part of cultural existence belonging to our country. Consequently, it is necessary to take measures in this sense without allowing waste of much more time.

There are many high quality, health science information resources freely available on the Internet. Many governmental and non-governmental organisations have web pages with very good information on health sciences that are highly useful for health professionals and patients. However, these reliable resources intermingle on the Web with other sites of low quality. The main tasks of today’s medical librarians are evaluation, selection, analysis and organisation of resources available on the Web in order to deliver them in a useful form to the end users. This article describes the setting up of the Aldebaran Virtual Library that serves the health staff of a large hospital and consists of high-quality health sciences resources available freely over the Internet. The article focuses on the criteria and objectives used for selecting and organising the content.

Evidence-based medicine has brought about a significant change in the role of information and its use on the part of health professionals, who must take appropriate decisions in their daily clinical practice. Evidence-based methodology has encouraged the creation of its own information sources that appraise, synthetise and provide comments on the most pertinent and rigorous current research on a given topic, with the goal of facilitating the decision-making process. The aim of this article is to describe evidence-based medicine's most relevant sources of information, especially those available over the Web that provide reliable answers to clinical questions.

Departing from the serials crisis, this paper seeks to point out the areas of conflict, which are dominated by three principal agents: the scientific community, publishing
houses and libraries. In order to facilitate interaction between these agents the open access movement has been formed, which receives considerable support from the librarianship. Abutted to the Anglo-American university presses, it has been postulated in the scientific community that German universities engage in publishing activities too. The focal point of this work is - apart from an assessment of the current situation and an overview of the Anglo-American university presses - a critical account of the German university press. On the basis of qualitative interviews different publishing houses are critically assessed in terms of their services offered. In a short excursus this paper describes subject-related publishing activities in the context of the open access movement. In conclusion this paper will expound the problems of German university presses – and formulate an outlook as to what may be the future course of the industry.

With the worldwide spread o1 internet usage, the goal for electronic interconnection of bibliographic data with the full text has been achieved to a significant extent.
This became possible with the evolution of database networking systems, which lead to new collaboration agreements between information providers and information publishers. Among the solutions which embraced the new developments, are SiiverPlatter Information's ERL/SilverLinker and Info-tracWeb and Infotrac Total Access from the Gale Group.
SilverLinker links bibliographic data from over 70 databases and the full text of 2,719 electronic journals. The number of links as well as the number of journals is dynamic and increases continuously, proving that both publishers and providers of information are willing to work together. In turn, this is the product of attention paid to users' requests and the large extent to which specific systems have been adopted worldwide.
InfoTrac Web from the GaleGroup combines bibliographic and full text/full image data in its original published form, since the Gale Group has a significant advantage in being a database publisher and full text rights owner at the same time.
In summation, a number of dynamic integrated solutions are available. They bring together many different systems under one seamless interface, simplifying the process of getting to the full text, for the end user, tn essence we now have the tools for accessing the global knowledge pool.

Electronic books and journals are both desirable and feasible. From a user's point of view they solve some shortcomings of conventional media, but more important are the new opportunities they open. To exploit those, a number of technical challenges have to be addressed. Besides, a series of business and organisational issues have to be taken care of. The German project MeDoc had to cope with a subset of these questions and found pragmatic answers. Libraries and librarians are well adviced to embrace electronic media as an important new opportunity.

This article will provide data to specify the problem of low e-book-supply. First the total number of commercially available English-speaking e-books in the US-market is stated. Then the growth of the title supply over the last twenty years is reviewed. Third the growth of the publishing-activities in the e-book-market is set in relation to the developments in the hardcover-market. Finally these numbers of the English-speaking market are compared to the numbers for the German-speaking market.

E-Kitap Teknolojisi ve Kullanımı

HO. e-books.
HP. e-resources.
The book industry that showed extraordinary development with the invention of printing machine by Johann Gutenberg during the 1450’s is constantly changing along with new telecommunication and information technologies. The most recent evolution in the book and publishing industry is electronic books. E-book technology supported by hardware, software and standart protocols and some of its advantage and disadvantages had produced e-book readers that became unseparable part of our academic and daily life. E-books, in recent years, has became more widespread in the areas of publishing, education and information services and are reaching larger user groups. It is expected that this new technology will change our way of information acquisition and dissemination. This seems unavoidable despite the views of those who argue that e-books cannot be an alternative to printed books. Widespread of e-books will be added a new dimension to technical and user services in information centers.

Gutenberg on demand

Is Print on Demand a new frontier for publishers and libraries? Talking about Italy, the answer is yes. Search on Print on Demand services on the Web based on foreign experiences, such as North European and American ones, where libraries play a crucial role in this new publishing process. As in the journals dealing with librarianship there is no literature concerning Print on Demand, I deeply analized web sources, such as publishing websites that offer Print on Demand services, WebConference, interviews with authors and writers who use PoD, articles on Webzine and, above all, reports of the European Council's workshop on the survey at the European level.

HO. e-books.
If many aspects of a perfect management sys-tem for e-journals still have to be defined, this is more than true in the case of e-books. E-books are new and the immaturity of existing models is even greater. This lack of maturity is evident in the integration of e-books in MetaLib and SFX. The limitations of SFX for the administration of the ISBN restrict the functionalities of this link technology. On the other hand the interoperability of the portals of e-books leaves much to be desired.

The aim of the paper is to show the most important developments of the e-book in the last 10 years. Special emphasis is on the activities contributing to the creation of favorable condition for the production, distribution and reading electronic books. Successful information management with regard to e-books means defining the term e-book itself, developing identification systems, digital rights management and legal deposit as a part of digital libraries and cultural heritage.

Library subject gateways (LSGs) are collections of databases and other information resources, arranged by subject, that have been assembled, reviewed and recommended by specialists, usually librarians. These library developed gateway collections support research and reference needs by identifying and pointing to recommended, academically-oriented web pages.
Back at beginning of SGs libraries used to develop such tools by creating HTML coded web pages without using resource management software or any metadata description standards. These days, several open source software that support metadata description standards, data harvesting, web technology standards for SG creation and management have been developed providing the opportunity to every institution to create such a tool alone or in a cooperative with other institutions basis. On top of all such software does not demand any knowledge of HTML coding from the SG editors.
THIRA was developed under PLOEGIS: from information to knowledge project (Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training ΙΙ - OPEIVT ΙΙ)
After extensive bibliographic literature review on LSGs a list of mandatory characteristics was developed to define the core features of software the Library was looking for the creation and management of its SG. Based on the characteristics list the project team (both librarians and IT personnel) selected Scout Portal Toolkit because it was virtually turnkey, very inexpensive to maintain and operate, easy for non-technical staff to set up and populate with metadata, conformed to international standards for metadata, data harvesting and web technology.
Scout PT comes with a Dublin Core Element Set and it took a few adjustments in order to support the metadata description of the resources held by the Library. Its Controlled Name Flag allows the usage of any thesaurus and its Classification Flag is open to any classification scheme. The project team selected the NDC’s bilingual List of Subject Headings for the subject description of the resources and the Australian Standard Classification of Education to create the Thematic Index.
Regarding the technical aspect of the application, extensive additions to Scout’s source code were made in order to meet the requirements of the Library including changes to the database schema. The most fundamental issue was multi-language support (English and Greek) both in the application interface (menus, forms, etc) and in the bibliographical data (support for separate trees for each language). After adding multi-language capabilities to the application, the Library personnel proceeded to translating all forms, views and messages appearing in Scout in Greek. Furthermore, an alphabetic index of resources was added to the browsing options. Since this type of browsing was not provided in the original toolkit, the corresponding index was built from scratch. Finally, changes were also necessary in the metadata fields used in advanced search forms in order to provide the users with additional search options when looking for resources.
The initial testing of the application included 311 databases held by the library at that moment. The conclusions drawn of this face highlighted some necessary improvements. These improvements mainly concerned the browsing capabilities offered to users which were initially limited to either resource type or resource thematic description, i.e it was not possible to view resources of a specific type (e.g. databases or electronic journals) for a given topic. In this direction, links were initially added to allow viewing only databases and more elaborate filtering capabilities were subsequently implemented.

The Library of the Université Libre de Bruxelles and Editions de l’Université de Bruxelles (EUB), the University’s publishing imprint, have recently agreed to collaborate to provide free online access to recent out-of-print books published by EUB. The e-books are available on the Digithèque website, a collection of digital copies of printed books created by the Library. This initiative is valuable for the scientific community and the general public who can freely access the books online, for the authors whose books have been digitized and widely disseminated, and for the publisher whose collections become more visible on the Internet, thereby generating more traffic on its website and potentially increasing sales of its other books. Around 20 books have been made available online so far. This article describes the context of the agreement, how the collaboration operates, the options of file conversion vs. book scanning, issues relating to copyright and users’ rights, how access is provided to the digital copies, and future collaborative projects of the Library and EUB.

e-publishing during past five years, as well as of the questions following
it: copyright protection, acquisition methods, different types of licenses library investments problems whether it is about subscription to the
e-editions bought by the library or those created by digitizing items of the

growth on one side and inadequate use of the e-resources on the other side
are presented, as well as user desires towards the contents of the

Exploring faculty experiences with e-books: a focus group

BI. User interfaces, usability.
HO. e-books.
Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe how, in the spring of 2007, Arizona State University Libraries held a focus group of selected faculty to discover their perceptions and use of electronic books (e-books) in their research and teaching.
Design/methodology/approach – The services of the Institute of Social Sciences Research were employed to recruit and moderate the focus group. Major themes explored were: use of e-books as textbooks; use of e-books for personal research; comparison between e-books and print; disciplinary differences in perceptions of e-books; and motivators for future use.
Findings – Overall, the focus group revealed that faculty had generally unsatisfactory experiences in using e-books in their research and teaching owing to the unreliability of access, lack of manipulability, and the steep learning curve of the various interfaces. However, most faculty agreed that e-books would be a very viable and useful alternative if these issues were resolved.
Research limitations/implications – The focus group consisted of only six faculty members and hence is not representative of faculty as a whole. A larger survey of a more diverse faculty population would greatly serve to clarify and expand upon the findings.
Practical implications – The implications for academic libraries include providing better outreach and training to faculty about the e-book platforms offered, provide better course support, and advocate to e-book vendors to consider faculty's teaching and research needs in their product development.
Originality/value – This is believed to be the first published study of faculty opinions and use of e-books utilizing focus group methodology and offers detailed information that would be useful for academic libraries and e-book vendors for evidence-based decisions.

Though the share of Kannada language e-books is negligible, Tamil has registered with an impressive number of e-books. With a lot of anomalies and confusions about the digital rights of e-books coupled with insecure feeling among the authors and publishers about copyright in digital environment have resulted in the set back on the efforts of giants like Google and Microsoft forcing them to restrict their digitization to copyright-free books. Many popular predictions of decline in the use of printed books did not come true. A born e-book in the real sense comprising of all possibilities of multimedia is lot more effective than a scanned copy of a printed book on the computer screen.

The paper describes the Google Library Project, a program by Google to digitize the entire content of five of the biggest libraries of the world. The purpose of this digitization is to offer an online catalogue, through which users can search where in this huge content the words the list in their search exist. A sentence or two, containing these words will be exposed with each search (‘snippets’). The project faced immediate adverse reaction by publishers and author’s organizations, despite the opt-out possibility they are offered, to extract content from the project. The main legal problems related to digitization are presented. A discussion about the program’s legitimacy and its future follows.

HO. e-books.
Over recent years there has been considerable confusion over the use of the term ‘e-book’, and this article examines the variety of definitions used to date while proposing a definitive construct. Beginning by examining the definitions of ‘book’, the paper moves on to consider the essential element of a book – the content, and to examine publishing and structural aspects of e-books, as well as their place in libraries, before arriving at a final definition. The definition and its derivation embrace all of the issues that affect the way in which e-books are understood and used today. In conclusion, the article looks at both the genesis of e-books, and the stage of acceptance and adoption that they have reached, with brief reference to 3rd-generation e-book readers available at the time of writing.

Books, reading and the publishing industry are experiencing changes motivated by technological advancement. The content has been separated from the material and, therefore, the publishing industry has had to alter its logistic structure, based of physical distribution until recently. Print on demand and online bookstores are now meeting new needs: they have increased the possibilities of visibility and circulation of editorial production, and they have suppressed geographic and physical barriers.

The development of the healthcare, teaching and research activities of a pediatrician involves a continuous learning of information skills. Health sciences libraries have been transformed by the digital world development, becoming mediators and suppliers among information and its users. They are adapting their contents for the new electronic formats and are converting their services into virtual ones. Pediatricians use different kind of information resources to solve their information needs in their jobs. These have been transformed by electronic gateways, turning into very active resources and being continuously updated. They also make the access to other services or other information sources related to the founded subject easier. The resources currently used are reviewed by us: electronic books, databases and electronic journals.

We describe the Biblioteca Virtual de Derecho Aragonés project, its chronological and thematic scope, the scientific team that conducted it and the institutional support received by the project. The production of the first digital disk edition in 2003, related to the Civil Law, and the online edition that also incorporates public law is outlined. The characteristics of the information system and the OAI-PMH repository are described, as well as the various harvesters as OAIster, Europeana, Hispanic that aggregate its content. The output of documents in MOBI and ePub formats is analysed, and finally the future plans for the database, such as the OCR following ALTO for 300,000 pages of old printed books, the application of SKOS for organizing content, the creation of a harvester to collect information on Civil and Public Law and measures of long-term digital preservation as the OAIS model are mentioned.

Comparing Bananas with Grapes: Ebook Use Data from a Bunch of Vendors
Kraus, Joseph
HO. e-books.
The Penrose Library at the University of Denver has access to hundreds of thousands of electronic books (ebooks) from a wide variety of aggregators and publishers. While many librarians have a great deal of experience in the analysis of journal use data, the analysis and publication of ebook use data is behind the curve. Many journal publishers provide "Counter Compliant" statistics to their subscribing institutions, but this is not the case for most ebook publishers. Thus, comparing ebook use from one vendor to the next can be difficult. Even though many ebook publishers do not provide "Counter Compliant" use statistics, several common data elements were used in this comparison. In order to keep the study focused, the presenter extracted use data from several vendors to analyze use in the subject areas of engineering and computer science. Ebook use data were also compared to print book use data in those two subject areas.

Analysis of E-book Use: The Case of Ebrary

HO. e-books.
BH. Information needs and information requirements analysis.
CA. Use studies.
The interest in the use of electronic media in scholarly communication is growing. Nowadays, libraries reserve much larger budgets for electronic information sources as users tend to get access to the full‐texts of journal articles and books online. The effective management of library collections is only possible through studies identifying user needs as well as studies of usage analysis showing how much of what is being used in these collections. Although e‐books are a significant part of library collections, studies on e‐book use are scarce. In this paper, we have analyzed about half a million use data of ebrary e‐book database by the users of Hacettepe University Libraries within a four‐year period (2006‐2009). We obtained COUNTER‐compliant use data identifying, among other things, book title, publisher, and publication year for each transaction to analyze the use. We identified the most frequently used e‐book titles by Hacettepe University ebrary users in each Library of Congress (LC) subject class. E‐books on Medicine (R) were used most often, followed by books on Education (L) and Language and literature (P). A small number of e‐books in each subject class satisfied half the demand, while an overwhelming majority of e‐book titles were never used. Findings of this study can be used to develop an e‐book collection management policy and understand its implications for consortial licensing of e‐book packages.

EB. Printing, electronic publishing, broadcasting.
HO. e-books.

Purpose: This paper provides an overview of the e-book marketplace players and their services against a context in which e-books are becoming an increasingly significant category of digital resource. This development of the availability e-books could have significant implications for the future role of libraries and for library strategies, policies and processes.
Design/methodology/approach: The paper starts with a brief overview of the literature on the global e-book market and e-book business models offered by vendors to libraries. Analysis of the websites of nine e-book publishers and eleven e-book aggregators was used as a basis for profiling the main features of e-books (user-oriented features and librarian-oriented features) and the services offered by e-book publishers and e-book aggregators.
Findings: The e-book market is under constant change and it is important to monitor its development, not just at national but also international level. Currently, the majority of e-book vendors market to library, typically academic libraries, and publishers increasingly using e-aggregators to distribute their titles. Collections of e-books are expanding gradually and there is evidence of increasing uptake. Current e-book business models are complex and range considerably.
Value: The paper draws attention to the potential of the future importance of e-books, and profiles the uptake of the e-book marketplace in terms of main players and their services.

Promoting your e-Books: Lessons from the UK JISC National e-Book Observatory
Lonsdale, Ray
Armstrong, Chris
CD. User training, promotion, activities, education.
HO. e-books.
Purpose – This paper describes the findings from the qualitative strand of the JISC National e-Book Observatory (2007-2009), relating to the promotion of e-textbooks in UK universities by the library, academics and publishers. A complementary article on the ways in which students and academics locate e-books provided by their library will appear in a future issue.
Design/methodology/approach – Following the provision by the JISC of collections of e-textbooks, the project used deep log analysis, benchmark surveys and focus groups to develop a rich picture of library e-collection management and use by students and academics. Focus groups were undertaken with library staff, academics and students; the dialogues were transcribed and analysed using NVivo7 software.
Findings – The qualitative studies found that libraries were using a range of promotional tools although these were not always finding their targets. Often libraries had no formal promotion strategy for e-resources. Although little in evidence, the value of academic commitment and promotion was emphasised. Promotion by publishers and aggregators is both to libraries and directly to academic staff. Students felt that they were largely unaware of promotion beyond the presence of e-books in the catalogue, and in some cases stated explicitly that they thought more should be done to promote library e-resources to them.
Practical implications – The paper offers pragmatic guidance on promotional methodologies.
Originality/value – The project describes the first major, national usage study of e-books in higher education. This paper contributes significantly to the literature in discussing the importance of promoting e-books to students and staff.

"The book: from papyrus to bytes" deals with the definition of book (in paper or electronic), starting from the concepts stablished in 1965 by the french sociologist Rober Escarpit. The next section "The book until yesterday" describes the "old" definition of the (paper) book, from cost and benefits to printing presses and a brief history from Gutenberg to the Americas. Wondering about a "electronic book", we ask ourselves: what is an electronic book? To respond with some consequences of these change. The paper continues with metaphores about the electronic [digital] revolution: coexistence with the traditional paper form; traditional and customized liaison with the
printed information and the mandatory mediation. We conclude that the old fashioned relation between book
and reader remains unchanged: free and freedom to choose; knowledge search and hoarding.

L. Information technology and library technology
With the arrival of new devices for reading electronic books which must essentially public to the convenience of reading which entails having screens not based on a technology called "electronic ink" retroiluminadas acceptance, we are witnessing a phenomenon which is present in every day media in the media (press, internet and television) and is focusing the concerns of publishers, authors, libraries, readers. Everyone wants to have their space to capitalize on the growing popularity of ebook readers. The publishing industry displayed cautious in this new situation since, on the one hand, does not want to lose their market share and on the other hand feels that with the eBook may lose part of control of an industry that has capitalised during more than five centuries.
Libraries in our country are beginning to offer services with electronic books in two ways. Yes there are differentiated in procurement policies which are carrying out publishers this phenomenon, implying perhaps more problematic is the theme uses, interests and other sectors involved and the preservation of copyright aspects. Scientific publishing houses policy is the same that has been used with electronic; journals i.e. does not purchase the book, if not a laying about permitted; uses access license nor is a unitary, if we subscribe to a closed package that focuses the interests of our users, and on the uses does not allow download purchase multi-user any member of the community which must be identified on an intranet.
Procurement is carried out in the collections of public libraries is still much more restrictive; the book is provided with a digital rights Manager (DRM) which limits the uses and use the electronic multi-user capabilities, and if the library you want to have more copies to give you must buy additional licenses, i.e. its functionality is almost of the physical book: a person a loan. The pricing policy is also different the sale price to the public, overloading to almost triple its price per unit. In this communication we analyze the phenomenon and its impact on all agents and aspects of the process.

Surely 2010 will be the year of introduction to Catalonia in the early readers e-books in public libraries. In 2009, the libraries
UOC and UPC have already begun a series of pilot tests to analyze the response of
users to this new technology. In the news they were receiving other neighboring countries can infer the high degree of acceptance of electronic books between users.
However, it is true that we have a very mature technology and not only with respect to the technology itself but also regarding the available collections, mainly in Catalan and Spanish. Editors, librarians and consumers observe the neighbor waiting for some movement.
We haven't a definitive model or even a standard for e-book readers or for the formats of these digital objects, but in fact you can buy the first models and collections. Libraries can not be left out of this new form of access and that's why, despite the uncertainties, the General
Libraries has launched a pilot project to incorporate a total of 28 readers in a
selected number of libraries Public Library System of Catalonia.
In this paper a preliminary approach to the situation of the electronic book is
describes the service model and business agreed with the supplier for this project
Specifically, the various collections available in our country and state of the art
regarding e-book readers.
They also discussed the issues that remain open, clear business models
for libraries, lack of specific services for the distribution and loan
collections of electronic books to libraries, etc..
