Digital libraries and the blind and visually impaired

LJ. Software.
Until recently, the blind and visually impaired have had a very restricted access to information. The reason is that the production of formats readable to them (such as Braille and audio), is rather slow as well as expensive and thus only a minute amount of published works has been made available in the adjusted formats. However, since digital formats have come into being, the situation has significantly changed for the better, primarily because of the possibility to use text-to-speech software that reads aloud digital text on the computer screen. This enables the blind and visually impaired to access digital information at the same time as anyone else and at no additional cost. Digital libraries on the World Wide Web are of particular importance in this context, both if they contain full-text documents or secondary information resources. The existing digital libraries and collections would be discussed from the blind and visually impaired user’s point of view, as well as taking into account accessibility issues from several aspects such as user interface and information seeking behaviour.

"Ontology-based metadata application for Digital Libraries". An ontology is a formal specification of a conceptualization, usually related to a specific domain of knowledge like library and information science. The metadata application profile along with the documentation of its abstract model can be thought of a primitive ontology of a specific implementation. Classification themes and thesaurus, which have been used for a long time in the library and information arena, are also a source of formal ontologies. After formalization processing and encoded with standard ontology languages, these kinds of concept systems can be very useful to establish a metadata service based on ontology services and fulfill the high level interoperability of digital libraries. And many languages and tools used to establish formal Ontology are introduced and comparatively analyzed in this paper.

Wikipedia, an international project that uses Wiki software to collaboratively create an encyclopaedia, is becoming more and more popular. Everyone can directly edit articles and every edit is recorded. The version history of all articles is freely available and allows a multitude of examinations. This paper gives an overview on Wikipedia research. Wikipedia’s fundamental components, i.e. articles, authors, edits, and links, as well as content and quality are analysed. Possibilities of research are explored including examples and first results. Several
characteristics that are found in Wikipedia, such as exponential growth and scale-free networks are already known in other context. However the Wiki architecture also possesses some intrinsic specialities. General trends are measured that are typical for all Wikipedias but vary between languages in detail.

DOI: uno strumento per costruire la biblioteca digitale

LZ. None of these, but in this section.
The Digital Object Identifier t (DOI) is born to address to the needs of publishers in the context of digital documents and of the distribution via Internet of works protected by copyright. The syntax of DOI is quite simple; one of the most important characteristics is to be a ‘dump number’.
The initial proposal sorts from the Association of American Publishers in 1996. DOI came as a common base that allows to connect among different identification systems, like ISBN, ISSN, PII, SICI, ect. With notable emphasis the fact is stressed that AAP did not intend to deal with DOI and with the DOI system but a specific foundation, born in 1998, the International DOI Foundation. The discussion about it was developed in particular between 1997 and 2002, when the infrastructure was built that served to manage and to promote the DOI. Several interventions specified the characteristics and the role of DOI. It was decided to use the indecs framework to describe the set of the metadata elements connect with DOI. Norman Paskin, director of IDF, emerges as referring officer of DOI. In the beginnig resolution was ‘one to one’, but DOI requests a resolution ‘one to many’. The change was done when the agency CrossRef started to offer its services to a wider public. This passage facilitates further developments, such as the integration of the standard OpenUrl.
It is suggested that a possible competor for the DOI will be the OAI identifier. However it is less robust than the DOI. The future developments of the situation will depend from the quality of related services and from the proliferation of open archives.

The role of a digital librarian in the management of digital information systems (DIS)
Sreenivasulu, V.
IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
Stresses that the multimedia nature of the next generation of digital libraries requires the digital librarians (DL) to be essentially a type of specialist librarian who has to manage and organize the digital library, handle the specialized tasks of massive digitization, storage, access, digital knowledge mining, digital reference services, electronic information services, search co-ordination, and manage the archive and its access. The digital librarian acts as guardian of the information superhighway/the universal digital library or the global digital library and acts as a symbiotic human-machine guru. This article also highlights the roles and functions of a DL in information retrieval, content delivery, navigation, and browsing. It envisages the professional education and training for digital librarians in the management of digital information systems. It denotes the DL's interface functions, roles, skills and competencies for the management of digital information systems in the important areas of imaging technologies, optical character recognition, markup languages, cataloguing, metadata, multimedia indexing and database technology, user interface design, programming, and Web technology. This paper finally advocates and targets the task of creating a new job title - digital librarian - to take care of digital libraries and to manage the digital information system.

Portals represent a wide variety of information. As organisations try to leverage more and more internal and external information and knowledge assets for competitive advantage and developing core competencies, variants of custom developed portals have burst on the scene. Enterprise Information Portals (EIP’s) have started acting as the gateway to the Implicit and Explicit knowledge assets for organizations. This paper intends to discuss the evolution, benefits and architecture of an EIP. In the end the future roadmap for EIP’s is also outlined.

This work establishes a historical, conceptual and technical correlation between hypertext and the electronic flux of information. It begins with a discussion on the historical retrospect of hypertext from a perspective that considers it a part in the evolving processes of registration and dissemination of knowledge, a position in disagreement with the authors who defend the visionary character attributed to Vannevar Bush; thus, the first conceptual discourses that came close to what would later be materialized as the hypertext, are attributed to other important names, such as Paul Otlet. The article approaches the importance of hypertext, as a resource that allows greater correlation between users and the stocks of knowledge, presenting some of its most important characteristics, such as interactivity. It proceeds with a brief presentation of a bibliometric analysis of scientific production on hypertext, in the area of Information Science, published in Brazilian periodicals and international databases during the years 1990-2002. The results were published in a periodical specialized in the area. This article also discusses the correlation between the utilization of hypertext resources and the processes of information (construction, communication and utilization), presenting a review of the literature that includes, besides the conceptual debates, reports on the experiences in the utilization of hypertext. And it concludes with the systematization of its contents.

Faced with the rapid proliferation of digital information resources within organizations, employees need targeted search systems in order to be effective in their jobs. The goal of this study is to develop a model of information behaviour within a work-task framework that can be used to inform the design of a workplace information search system. In a two-phase process, we conducted a series of studies using multiple methods to identify workplace
characteristics and to understand how they influence the needs, search strategies, and information sources used by software engineers working as services consultants in a large high-tech company.

The publishing and journalistic communities, in their attempt to organize and manage information, which proceed from the environment of news, use broadly recognized standards. Their goal is the achievement of processes, such as the description, the structure, the documentation and the exchange of data between big organizations. Indicatively some of these standards, which are reported, are NewsML, Nitf, Prism, IPTC 7901, IIM, RSS, etc. The following article was written so as some of the above mentioned standards to be localized and reviewed and ended in the presentation of a comparative report relatively to these standards. Their characteristics and several similarities and dissimilarities were given. The main goal of this article is to make known the presence, the usefulness and the necessity of the news standards in the bosom of Library Science and generally of Information Society.

Realizing the Digital libraries : assumptions and challenges underlying it

JG. Digitization.
The field of digital libraries is in a constant state of change. Digital libraries are organizations that provide the resources, including the specialized staff, to select, structure, offer intellectual access to, interpret, distribute, preserve the integrity of, and ensure the persistence over time of collections of digital works so that they are readily and economically available for use by a defined community or set of communities. Digital libraries are compilations of materials published electronically and those converted to digital form. There is considerable experimentation underway regarding the technical, economic, and organizational supports necessary for such distributed arrangements. The term “Digital Library” may be understood in different ways and named differently. The terms are used, sometimes synonymously, sometimes to denote a subset or a superset or sometimes to denote a rather different concept like virtual library, hybrid library, library with out walls etc. This article tries to make a framework for the term digital library by analyzing all terms in terms of its services, functions, collection etc. It discusses some technical issues and challenges for digital librarians. Some graphical representations also included for making clear the idea of digital libraries.

OAI-PMH has emerged as a more efficient way of facilitating the dissemination of data content. Its success is shown when displaying important information sources that use this protocol, emphasizing: Scielo, ArXiv and PubMed, among others. Nevertheless, its evolution proves a certain degree of arrearage before the current tendencies and demands of the new technological needs, that is to say, the latest technical and methodological characteristics that allow a potential operation of information, are continuously required.
In order to make the new necessity clear on this recognized form of interoperability, the experience gained during the development of the metasearch engine OA-Hermes, which groups different sources of information in a single interface, will be presented. A decrease in time as an achieved factor has to do with the consultation of diverse sources of information, since from a single search, the results of different sources like institutional repositories, digital libraries, and data bases, among others, are semantically integrated.
The technical experience obtained in analyzing the OAI-PMH protocol, led us to reflect on different aspects that have to do with: work methodology, the marketing or fashion of its use, its facility of implantation, or on the information redundancy, just to mention a few.

LC. Internet, including WWW.
In the early years of the twenty first century a huge development of the theorical framework for the implementation of e-government services based on interoperability has undergone. The final objective in this field consists of configuring a theorical and normative framework throght the creation of an "interoperability framework" for e-government services which can be used by public organizations to generate interoperable contents, products and services. This paper analyses the European and Spanish policies and initiatives related to e-goverment interoperability. Some possibilities and prospects of xml technologies to improve content interoperability and to manage public information in an efficient way are proposed.

This paper analyses the situation of public portal and its relationship with the evolution of e-governent services, introducing the main differences between public and private portals. The users of information are analysed, establishing four basic categories: citizens, business, civil servants and public organizations. The importance of a user-centred e-egovernment is highlighted. A classification of the portals is introduced and the relevance of thematic portals in fostering r+d and innovation is emphasized. Finally, some future prospects of thematic portals evolution are theorized.

Two-dimensional maps are a valuable interface element for the visualization of information retrieval results or other large sets of objects. Various methods exist for the creation of these maps. This article describes a comparative evaluation of topographic maps based on “Kohonen Self Organizing Maps” (SOM). These results show that the mapping method has to be chosen very carefully and different methods should be tested for an application.

LC. Internet, including WWW.
Wikimedia Foundation's wikis - first of all the Wikipedia project to create a free encyclopaedia - play an important role in wiki's success. Wikipedia is currently the 17th most visited website worldwide so it's of general public interest to find out more about its structure and processes. Research on Wikipedia is supported by making its data publically available. Wikipedians reflect a lot on their project and there is a small but growing number of scientific papers in Wikipedia research. Most of the large wikis use the same MediaWiki-engine like Wikipedia so general wiki research can also profit from Wikipedia research. However it is difficult to analyze Wikipedia without basic knowledge of its particularities and some involvement in the community. This workshop wants to bring together people interested in further wikipedia research. A short overview of current Wikipedia research will be given as well as some practical guidelines on methods how to analyze data and where to get in contact with the community. Together we want to talk about differences and commonalities of Wikipedia and other wikis and hot topics in Wikipedia research.

Biblioteca tradicional x biblioteca virtual: modelos de recuperação da informação
Moreira, Walter
LM. Automatic text retrieval.

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
HS. Repositories.
Taking libraries as "technologies of intelligence" the author develops a reflection where tradicional library is "opposed" to its virtual counterpart. Models of information retrieval are discussed within the two mentioned models of libraries. New virtual concepts as "navigation" or "surfing" are compared with those present in more traditional information retrieval systems, as "the best match". Here are some other opposite concepts discussed: fuzzy set theory opposed to boolean logic; the interrelation between the basis of information technology and the development of information retrieval tools are also under scrutinity. At last, it discusses the specificity of hypermidia environment which poses new questions to the development of Information Retrieval Theory. The radical differences perceived between tradicional and virtual libraries does not leads the author to a polarization when considering the future. Although digitalization is an irreversible tendency related to information world, the author concludes by the complementarity of the two models of libraries.

Análisis de la experiencia internacional en servicios de administración electrónica basados en XML

ID. Knowledge representation.
IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
HQ. Web pages.
The usage of XML markup language and related technologies in the development of e-government services to improve codification, integration and interchange of electronic information is analysed. There are different alternatives to introduce XML technologies to e-government, namely: the usage of XML markup language, the usage of a language based on XML but oriented specifically to e-government, such as GOVML, or the usage of specific markup languages for specific purposes, such as: UBL and EML. It is concluded that XML based technologies have certain strategic application within an organization, among them can be pointed out the following ones: the improvement of work chain, the return of investments in a short term, the management of intangible assets of the organization, and the development of innovative e-gov services. Nevertheless, XML related technologies by themselves do not report any added value to an organization, their actual value depends on how efficiently and coherently XML technologies are applied in the context of an organization.

Bibliographic information displays has been analysed from different points of view. This study is based on the IFLA Guidelines for OPAC displays (1998 and 2003), that state the minimun right presentation of bibliographic records in online catalogues. Once both IFLA documents were compared, it has been developed a evaluation checklist that includes these suggestions concerning bibliographic information displays. The aim was to use it to measure to what extent some of the main library management systems implemented in Spanish academic libraries fulfil this proposed guidelines. Results show that is a wide gap between the features of existing OPAC systems and the ideal ones suggested by IFLA; the average score of the fulfilment for the OPAC included in this study was 55%, and the systems that scored highest were Millennium, Unicorn, Aleph and Absys.

This paper examines the organizational schemes of information resources provided in 38 academic business libraries or collections from 50 top-ranking business schools. A wide variety of schemes, ranging from a simple alphabetical list by database titles to research guides in which resources are inseparably embedded where relevant, were found to illustrate current practices in presenting information resources in the web-based environment. In addition, the paper develops a typology by which the schemes are classified and assessed by resource integration dimension, resource/user orientation dimension, and user-education approach dimension. This typology will assist in assessing existing schemes from the perspectives of both search and instruction as well as in developing new schemes.

This work is based on the concept of “public sphere” proposed by Jürgen Habermas, in order to promote the understanding of blogs as potential tools for the creation and maintenance of an online public sphere. It verifies if the blog Bibliotecários Sem Fronteiras can be considered an online public sphere with focus on Library and Information Science, given its description and social norms applied.

The natural language is understood as the language spoken and corresponded with the aim that communication exists between one or several persons. The interpretation of the natural language makes it the brain, starts interpreting certain sensory income, like to see or to hear some sign of alarm; the brain turns the information codified in a symbolic set or language. The principal reason of the processing of the natural language is to construct systems and mechanisms that allow the communication between persons and machines by means of natural languages.

There’s more than one contradiction when the words “Web” and “science” are united in the same phrase. On the one hand, web contents always have waked up distrusts in academic and professional sectors: Who controls the information that is published in the Web? Is trustworthy the information that can be found through the search engines? Publishing controls, that have meant so much for the science progress, will be applied on the web?

Improvements in telecommunication infrastructures along with software developments allow faster and more effective interaction between users. This is so in the health care sector, where the correct and rational use of new technologies can improve the relation between doctor and patient, hospital and users, and between patients and others affected by similar health problems.

Which are the best ways to promote heritage? Of course, mass media, travel agencies, tourism offices, embassies,... but specially the Internet. The Internet attracts potential tourists looking for cultural information, but it is accessible to everyone. Are public resources in web sites of high quality? Do web sites give good information about museums?

Perspective on some of the current trends in portal design, based on transformations in technology, information, and organization within the information society. Our purpose is to clarify the amalgamation of ideas that encompass the portal concept, with the goal of contributing or suggesting new scenarios for the future. In an effort to address the need for new models of electronic content management based on a network of interactive information and communication, the article proposes a model similar to social networks as a change agent in the portal paradigm.

As www, and now web 2.0 is growing by the second, it gives us new possibilities of pedagogical forms, and the main following outcomes: resources, implementation, usage, practice. We will re-evaluate and examine new forms of social networking - theoretical and practical knowledge in academia and science: from implemetation of web roots practice, listservs, eBoards, eZines (alternative art and education forms –then), the usage of eResources in academia, education profession to the wider audience: using larger online open archives, Consortias, digital libraries, repositories, to online social networking applications, science and education blogs.
Author uses and presents data from her Master research paper with relevant results about the usage of the precious online resources, electronic publishing materials within Consortia (that are available in science institutions, academia and libraries). More than thousands and thousands available resources are not used because of many factors that the author explained in one of the chapters in master paper. As indicated in outlines, e-tensions play themselves differently in various institutional geographies. Author took empirical research on three geographic points: USA, Europe (UK and Nederlands) and Serbia.
The Scopes are two paradigms: human factor and digital media educational tools (human-computer interaction and its social impacts), that we use in education systems and professional practice. For the first one is indicated open source educational software, applications and tools for giving information and knowledge. We will also give a short notice on the interest and the usage of the aimed groups of those possiblities (at classes, lectures). For the second, in professional practice we will see how those social knowledge tools have impact on larger science commnity groups (science, educational institutes and institutions) as well as the outcome-feedback.
The point will be given on interaction in open knowledge and education, as well as the notice to the audience of the recent exemplar of implementation of social, interactive knowledge into professional practice and educational system - the concept of web of science which founder is the father of World Wide Web Tim Berners- Lee.

Besides few words on the archival description tradition, it is presented a sort of classification of digital archival finding aids, from plain text to infomation systems and portals.
Moreover, some issues on this topic are put in evidence (linguistic - contents, syntactical - structural and system-level) and some possible solutions are listed. In particular, the strong need for archival professionals to go further their descriptive rules in order to come closer to users, using classification schemes, authority lists, thesauri and ontologies.

A research was made about the accessibility of research papers in Croatian scientific journals. The first part of the research was dealing with bibliographic data published with categorized papers in printed scientific journals in Croatia in order to make them more accessible. Publishing of the following data was analyzed: title, author’s name, institution/ author’s address, UDC, current title, dates of receiving and acceptance by the edito- rial department, and paper category. Second part of the research is about web versions of the same journals, and it was carried out in 2002 and 2005. Quantity of bibliographic data in printed scientific journals increased during the observed period. Quantity of journals accessible on the web increased also.

Library subject gateways (LSGs) are collections of databases and other information resources, arranged by subject, that have been assembled, reviewed and recommended by specialists, usually librarians. These library developed gateway collections support research and reference needs by identifying and pointing to recommended, academically-oriented web pages.
Back at beginning of SGs libraries used to develop such tools by creating HTML coded web pages without using resource management software or any metadata description standards. These days, several open source software that support metadata description standards, data harvesting, web technology standards for SG creation and management have been developed providing the opportunity to every institution to create such a tool alone or in a cooperative with other institutions basis. On top of all such software does not demand any knowledge of HTML coding from the SG editors.
THIRA was developed under PLOEGIS: from information to knowledge project (Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training ΙΙ - OPEIVT ΙΙ)
After extensive bibliographic literature review on LSGs a list of mandatory characteristics was developed to define the core features of software the Library was looking for the creation and management of its SG. Based on the characteristics list the project team (both librarians and IT personnel) selected Scout Portal Toolkit because it was virtually turnkey, very inexpensive to maintain and operate, easy for non-technical staff to set up and populate with metadata, conformed to international standards for metadata, data harvesting and web technology.
Scout PT comes with a Dublin Core Element Set and it took a few adjustments in order to support the metadata description of the resources held by the Library. Its Controlled Name Flag allows the usage of any thesaurus and its Classification Flag is open to any classification scheme. The project team selected the NDC’s bilingual List of Subject Headings for the subject description of the resources and the Australian Standard Classification of Education to create the Thematic Index.
Regarding the technical aspect of the application, extensive additions to Scout’s source code were made in order to meet the requirements of the Library including changes to the database schema. The most fundamental issue was multi-language support (English and Greek) both in the application interface (menus, forms, etc) and in the bibliographical data (support for separate trees for each language). After adding multi-language capabilities to the application, the Library personnel proceeded to translating all forms, views and messages appearing in Scout in Greek. Furthermore, an alphabetic index of resources was added to the browsing options. Since this type of browsing was not provided in the original toolkit, the corresponding index was built from scratch. Finally, changes were also necessary in the metadata fields used in advanced search forms in order to provide the users with additional search options when looking for resources.
The initial testing of the application included 311 databases held by the library at that moment. The conclusions drawn of this face highlighted some necessary improvements. These improvements mainly concerned the browsing capabilities offered to users which were initially limited to either resource type or resource thematic description, i.e it was not possible to view resources of a specific type (e.g. databases or electronic journals) for a given topic. In this direction, links were initially added to allow viewing only databases and more elaborate filtering capabilities were subsequently implemented.

Our objective is to analyze the use that Latin American peer-reviewed journals make of the tools and opportunities provided by electronic publishing, particularly of those that would make them evolve to be more than “mere photocopies” of their printed counterparts. While doing these, we also set out to discover if there were any Latin American journals that use these technologies in an effective way, comparable to the most innovative journals in existence. We extracted a sample of 125 journals from the LATINDEX – Regional System of Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal – electronic resources index, and compared along five dimensions: (1) Non-linearity, (2) use of multimedia, (3) linking to external resources (“multiple use”), (4) interactivity, and (5) use of metadata, search engines, and other added resources. We have found that very few articles in these journals (14%) used non-linear links to navigate between different sections of the article. Almost no journals (3%) featured multimedia contents. About one in every four articles (26%) published in the journals analyzed had their references or bibliographic items enriched by links that connected to the original documents quoted by the author. The most common form of interaction was user↔journal, in the form of question forms (17% of journals) and new issue warnings (17% of journals). Some, however (5%) had user↔user interaction, offering forums and response to published articles by the readership. About 35% of the journals have metadata within their pages, and 50% offer search engines to their users. One of the most pressing problems for these journals it the wrong use of rather simple technologies such as linking: 49% of the external resource links were mismarked in some way, with a full 24% being mismarked by spelling or layout mistakes. Latin American journals still present a number of serious limitations when using electronic resources and techniques, with text being overwhelmingly linear and underlinked, e-mail to the editors being the main means of contact, and multimedia as a scarce commodity. We selected a small sample of journals from other regions of the world, and found that they offer significantly more nonlinearity (p = 0.005 0.1), interactive features (p = 0.005 0.1), use of multimedia (p = 0.04 0.1) and linking to external documents (p = 0.007 0.1). While these are the current characteristics of Latin American journals, a number of very notable exceptions speak volumes of the potential of these technologies to improve the quality of Latin American scholarly publishing.

E-scholia: Scenari Digitali per la Comunicazione Scientifica in Ambito Filologico
Romanello, Matteo
EB. Printing, electronic publishing, broadcasting.
IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
The thesis main goal is to suggest an innovative model for electronic web-based journals in the research field of classical studies and, in particular, of classical philology. In Italy, Humanities suffer some delay in the adoption of digital technologies with regard to publishing in scientific journals. However this delay could be avoided by taking advantage of the results obtained in the past recent years by projects started within other disciplines, in particular within physics and maths.
The first chapter discusses the effects of the Web on scientific communication systems such as the journal crisis, the appearance of initiatives in collaborative writing (e.g. Wikipedia) and the Open Access Movement. In the second chapter the main specifics of the Classical Literature and Philology field have been identified in order to outline the requirements of an e-journal model which can solve existing problems with the use of electronic resources for research purposes. The third chapter is dedicated to the illustration of the implementation of the project development.
In conclusion, the implemented prototype of an e-journal on classical philology highlighted how suitable the text encoding using an XML-compliant format is in order to provide scholars reading on-line publications with advanced features and value added services. Although the manual deep encoding of huge quantities of documents (journal articles, books, commentaries) is a task too expensive to perform with regard to both time and human resources necessary. Therefore it is need to develop in the next future some tools for the automatic extraction of semantic data from large corpora of unstructured discipline-specific texts.

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
During the epoch of latest rapid evolutions in information society, the publishing, journalistic and information communities generally, in their attempt to organize and handle news information, use broadly recognized metadata standards. Their goal is the encoding, the documentation, the exchange of data and the development of interoperability between big organizations’ technological platforms. For the fulfillment of this aim some standards contribute, such as NewsML, Nitf, Prism, XMLNews, IPTC 7901, which have come to light after the long-term research efforts and the international cooperative schemes of important information and news organizations. The principal goal of the poster is the inspection of the above-mentioned standards and the encoding of a certain newspaper object with the implementation of the worldwide-recognized news standard, NewsML. Especially, the encoding constitutes a very creative and interesting process, because of the contemporary technologies demanded for its materialization. The main solicitude of this poster is to end up to some enlighten conclusions as far as the importance of news standards is concerned for the management of news information and the provision of personalized services to the end-users, and moreover to prove that news standards can be a substantial aid in the area of Library and Information Science, concerning knowledge management.

Library information services in the digital age
Mayega, Stephen
IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
Library information services are a key element in libraries since the ancient times. Their vital role is increasingly becoming a measure of the library’s contribution to the transformation and development of a society and the nation at large. The use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) has caused a transformation in the users’ perception from what is being hosted in the library to how and when services are rendered to fulfill their requests. Consequently, libraries are becoming less important for the material they collect or house. Instead, their importance is being measured in respect to the fulfillment of the users’ requests. The movement of material from publishers and hosting them for "just in case" some users will need them is being replaced by delivering materials from publishers “just in time” to answer the user’s needs. However, this transformation has brought a challenge in the field of library information services of dealing with the ever-increasing complexity of information, differentiating useful information from mis-information, and upholding the rising needs expectations of the users. This paper will discuss the available technological opportunities that can be used by the library information services in addressing such challenges.

Analysis of accessibility and usability of web sites of 60 public libraries in Catalonia, the Catalonian Library and the collective catalogue of Barcelona's libraries' network. The accessibility was evaluated using indicators based on the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). The usability was evaluated regarding contents, users and other factors. We pay attention to URL, understandability, browseability, luminosity, design, etc. It concludes that 90% of the libraries do not carry out some of the recommendations and they are inaccessible. Most of the analysed websites would need several adaptations to be accessible. The usability is also deficient in general. The librarians should get involved in the accessible design of web resources to reduce the barriers for disabled people and foster the usability of the websites for the public at large.

Mapas Conceptuales y Mapas Mentales: Composición, Funciones y Principios de Calidad

A concept map or a mental map (as of now, we'll use the first as a unifying term) is a class diagram that tries to represent graphically a conceptual system components as well as relations between them.
By conceptual system we understand at least two things: (a), any more or less coherent and organized set of ideas within a larger or more complex theory, for example, the theory of evolution; (b), any set of entities and their relationships, for example, firms in a given country.
Conceptual maps do not have any restricted area, so that any aspect of the real world or the conceptual world is likely to be represented in a concept map. The complexity of the system that must be represented either sets any entry restriction: we cannot represent a conceptual map a theory as simple as the regulations governing use of a municipal swimming pool (which does not offend anyone in the world of swimming) or as complex as the one mentioned before.

A query language for xml should be flexible enough to cover the whole range of information sources that can be labelled by xml, including databases and web documents. In this article we present a comparative analysis of several query languages that have been created for xml. We study sets of desirable traits both from the point of view of the semistructured data community (that emphasise especially very large databases, the integration of heterogeneous sources and data transformation into common interchange formats), and from the point of view of the information retrieval community (that emphasise especially full-text searches, manipulation of the sets of results, inclusion relationships, distances, and ranking of the result documents).

Cognitive abilities, interfaces and tasks: effects on prospective information handling in email

This dissertation is focused on new email user interfaces that may improve awareness and handling of task-laden messages in the inbox. The practical motivation for this research was to help email users process messages more effectively. Two user studies were conducted to test hypothesized benefits of the new visual representations and to examine the effects of different levels of selected cognitive abilities on task-laden message handling performance. Task performance on both of the new visual interfaces was faster than on the more traditional textual interfaces, but only when finding date-related information. Selected cognitive abilities were found to impact different dependent measures. Working memory and flexibility of closure had effects on performance time, while visual memory and working memory had effects on user interactions involving manipulation of the visual field, such as scrolling and sorting.A field study was conducted to examine email practices related to handling messages that refer to pending tasks. Individual differences in message handling style were observed, with one group of users transferring such messages out of their email programs to other applications (e.g., calendars), while the other group kept prospective messages in email and used the inbox as a reminder of future events. This research contributes to understanding interactions among cognitive abilities, user interfaces and tasks. These interactions are essential for developing two types of interface: inclusive interfaces that work for users with a wide range of cognitive abilities, and personalized and adaptive interfaces that are fitted to individual characteristics. Two novel graphical user interfaces were designed to facilitate monitoring and retrieval of prospective information from email messages. The TaskView interface displayed task-laden messages on a two-dimensional grid (with time on the horizontal axis). The WebTaskMail interface retained the two-dimensional grid, but extended the representation of pending tasks (added distinction between events and to-do's with deadlines), a vertical date reading line, and more space for email message headers.

What Can Searching Behavior Tell Us About the Difficulty of Information Tasks? A Study of Web Navigation

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
Task has been recognized as an influential factor in information seeking behavior. An increasing number of studies are concentrating on the specific characteristics of the task as independent variables to explain associated information-seeking activities. This paper examines the relationships between operational measures of information search behavior, subjectively perceived post-task difficulty and objective task complexity in the context of factual information-seeking tasks on the web. A question-driven, web-based information-finding study was conducted in a controlled experimental setting. The study participants performed nine search tasks of varying complexity. Subjective task difficulty was found to be correlated with many measures that characterize the searcher's activities. Four of those measures, the number of the unique web pages visited, the time spent on each page, the degree of deviation from the optimal path and the degree of the navigation path's linearity, were found to be good predictors of subjective task difficulty. Objective task complexity was found to affect the relative importance of those predictors and to affect subjective assessment of task difficulty.

FotoFile is an experimental system for multimedia organization and retrieval, based upon the design goal of making multimedia content accessible to non-expert users. Search and retrieval are done in terms that are natural to the task. The system blends human and automatic annotation methods. It extends textual search, browsing, and retrieval technologies to support multimedia data types.

The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines, used for the electronic encoding of literary and linguistic texts and since 2001 based on the XML syntax, are constantly being more and more adopted by various digitalization projects. As the number of TEI digital texts and collections is growing, also the availability of software tools able to "manipulate" this kind of texts is increasing, and the choice is now much wider than it was just a few years ago. Each tool has its own peculiarities, which should be evaluated and confronted against the characteristics of the texts being encoded and the general needs and aims of the project of which the digital library is part. What this paper wants to analyze is the possibility of a classification of the actually available TEI Management Systems, using the Topic Maps technology, an ISO standard for the management and representation of knowledge.

Will Web 2.0 ever meet library catalogs? The Web is changing: we can define it "web 2.0" or "Social web" or we can use some other word, but certainly we can't deny that there is a change. Some elements, above all those due to the on-line availability of content (i.e. full text) and that some contents (users generated contents) are produced by users, now called "prosumer", are also generating change in the interfaces of libraries' catalogues on the web: the web OPAC. This address will pinpoint some particular changes in interfaces, in information retrieval systems and also how catalogue content is shown. The intention is to assess whether and to what extent these elements could be applied to the library catalogue.

We describe a technique for preserving and presenting context and history while navigating web resources described by keywords. We use tagging and tag clouds as an application area for our technique. The technique is illustrated by employing it in a prototype that interfaces data from a social tagging website used to bookmark academic articles. The prototype displays a “tag trail” which can reveal contextual connections between web resources and the associated tags. We argue that the user’s understanding of web resources is aided by making such connections explicit.

We consider search engines and collaborative tagging systems from the perspective of resource discovery and re-finding on the Web. We performed repeated searches over nine months on Google and del.icio.us for web pages related to three topics selected to have different dynamic characteristics. The results show differences in the resources they provide to the searcher. The resources tagged on del.icio.us differ strongly from the top results returned by Google. The results also suggest the changes in the most recently tagged web pages may be associated with the level of activity in user communities and, indirectly, with external events.

Despite much research on hypertext and web navigation, relatively little is known about the relationship between web navigation strategies and success. We present two exploratory studies designed to explore the relationships between several web navigation metrics that are based on similarity to an optimal path to predict task success. The data suggest that the relationships between these measures depend on the particular web navigation task.

La digitalización de la Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo: 1ª fase. Menéndez Pelayo y el "Proyecto Polígrafos"

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
JG. Digitization.
One of the most important projects in the new phase of the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo, after its website, has consisted not so much in the conversion of their catalogs but in a bid to digitize their collections. This decision has special significance because it opens a line of dissemination of information focusing on the documents rather than in their own library catalog. Thus, following one of the most active current of the humanities, the library takes an active role in the online edition of texts, thus collaborating with other scientific bodies.
The first phase involved the digitization of works of Menendez Pelayo, for which we have started both of the edition of the Complete Works held in conjunction with the CSIC, and the Correspondence, which was carried out with the Fundación Universitaria Española.
In addition, we have had from the outset, with the participation of the Fundación Histórica Tavera, which develops a comprehensive editing program of bibliographical and documentary sources in electronic format related to Spanish and Latin American culture, and the Asociación de Hispanismo Filosófico. Both institutions, together with the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo, have designed a broader and more ambitious project called "Polígrafos (= Polymath). The Obra Social La Caja de Ahorros de Santander and Cantabria very generously has run most of the expenses.

It describes the project of the Bibliotecas Virtuales of the Fundación Ignacio Larramendi and the current state of itm, a brief history of the various sub-projects that make up this library, as well as changes in the rules followed since its inception in 1999. It discusses why it is necessary to configure a source repository of publicly accessible information and general information on Spanish and Latin American thought. After ten years of the beginning of this project with the cd-rom Digital Menéndez Pelayo has happened a number of changes in both information technology and the Internet. The project has had a constant adaptation to new information technologies, from initial markup in HTML or TEI to the application of new cataloging rules Resource Description and Access. We describe the two repositories OAI-PMH adapted to Europeana Semantic Elements and their particular characteristics and its validation in the Open Archives Initiative, OAIster, Hispana and subsequently Europeana. It also describes the processes of aggregation of electronic resources on the network to form a complex digital object consisting of the biographies of an author, his works (FRBR terminology structured works, expressions, manifestations and items). It lists the project's future prospects based on adaptation to future Europeana Data Model, including SKOS, OAI-ORE and other semantic structures, and the dissemination of bibliographic data and authority under Open Linked Data.

Wikipedia als Teil einer freien bibliothekarischen Informationsinfrastruktur
Voss, Jakob
IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
This paper explores the usage of Wikipedia in the context of digital libraries. After a short description of Wikipedia and its main characteristics (wiki principle, free content, self-organization), commonalities of Wikipedia and digital libraries are shown. Possibilities to combine both are explained in general with connection methods and in detail with the cooperation between German Wikipedia and German National Library (DDB). For libraries Wikipedia can play an important part on the way to what is called library 2.0 – a more interactive and collaborative rediscovery of libraries in the digital age. It is explained how authority files play an important role in connecting Wikipedia and digital libraries and finally their integration into the evolving Semantic Web.

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
Due to the increasing digitalisation of cultural assets, information systems for data curation and information retrieval in large amounts of data become more and more important. ERIS is a thesaurus-based system for image retrieval. In opposite to conventional systems, ERIS provides direct access to the images by means of a visual representation of the thesaurus combined with a semantically zooming. The gap between semantic and visual access is minimized using a zoomable user interface. The adapted filter and search functionalities enable a limitation of the search results and a fuzzy search using synonymous and related terms.

IG. Information presentation: hypertext, hypermedia.
In this age of Information Technology, there have been so many opportunities for the Librarians for involvement in an information-based society including electronic and multimedia publishing, Internet based-information services, global networking, web based digital resources etc. The base of recorded information is growing at an accelerating rate, in increasing varieties of formats (texts, numeric, graphic, video, audio, image, electronic, etc.). Virtual Library can be defined as the Internet based Digital Library. The concept of “Virtual Library” is that any person who has a computer by which he can make connection to the library networks can access not only the resources of the library but also access variety of information that is available nationally and internationally through networks, like Internet, Intranet without being physically present in library. This article explains what is meant by a Virtual Library and to build a virtual library in what way the Librarians have to change their roles to face the challenges of modern Information Technologies in the changing environment. Also this article, discusses about the changing role of librarians, the skills needed to build a virtual library and how the virtual information should be collected, managed, preserved and disseminated to the millennium users.

This paper presents HyBook, an ad-hoc tool which was designed and implemented with the objective of improving the workflow management, and to allow the possibility of
automatically generating e-books regarding educational courses at the Instituto de Ciencias de la Educación (ICE) of the
Universidad de Zaragoza (UZ). So far, when the ICE of the UZ wanted to start a new educational initiative, the usual elaboration
process of the informative resources was performed manually. Now, by using our application the ICE will be able to centralize the information collection process, and automatically create the
two leaflets that the ICE publishes each year in a more simply and conveniently way.

Subject repositories are targeting exhaustivity within a domain. They want to be a central source of information for researchers: they tend to be very large. Those repositories also require precise indexing and controlled multilingual vocabulary for efficient retrieval of documents answering the explicit and tacit interests of the researcher. After presenting in Göteborg (DSUG 2009, Sweden) how we integrate thesauri and authority lists (organized along the W3C SKOS standard) into DSpace, we present to DSUG 2011 what discovery tools are now available for the users of WindMusic.org.
We hope that this presentation will be felt very practical and that it will spring ideas and discussions for potential evolutions of DSpace.

The emergence of the Internet has greatly expanded the possibilities of access to reference information in libraries, as the source volume exceeds the limits of existing physical collection of works from their collections. Of course, this can cause the user is overwhelmed by the large amount of information they have at their disposal, which he is not always able to assess and process properly. Given this difficulty, he finds it convenient to leave these tasks in the hands of generic search engines, whose algorithms (more or less complex) do not always return results tailored to their real needs. In this situation, the reference librarian should add to their ability to select relevant sources of information management software tools most appropriate to allow the reader the necessary autonomy in their search for information.

Subject of this diploma thesis are portal solutions for the presentation of electronic collections, including a market review and criteria for the acquisition decision from heilbronn business school´s point of view. In this thesis the heilbronn business school is presented and relevant basic conditions for the implementation of a portal solution are considered. Within the second part, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the term „portal“ and points out the features and elements of portal solutions. In the following the results of an interview with comparable universities are presented and a market review, introducing portal vendors and their portal solutions, is presented. Important aspects for the acquisition of a portal solution, relating to heilbronn business school´s perspective, are developed in the last part of the thesis. Finally an acquisition recommendation is given.

Is your library implementing or considering a “discovery” technology? Are you wondering if this will really bring into relief everything your users are “licensed to read”? Are you considering what the effects may be for public-facing services such as reference and instruction, or just curious about experiences at other libraries? Academic librarians using two different discovery products, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and Summon, will consider the transformative potential of these tools in light of the learning outcomes that guide us.
Drawing from our experiences, we will discuss possibilities, issues and questions that emerge in a discovery environment, including:
- ways to conceptualize information literacy
- consequent changes to practices in reference and instruction
- technical decisions/infrastructure
- implications for user experience
- proliferation of entry points
- issues related to branding and wayfinding

The discussions on the future of cataloging has received increased attention in the last ten years, mainly due to the impact of rapid development of information and communication technologies in the same period, which has provided access to the Web anytime, anywhere. These discussions revolve around the need for a new bibliographic framework to meet the demand of this new reality in the digital environment, ie how libraries can process, store, deliver, share and integrate their collections (physical, digital or scanned), in current post-PC era? Faced with this question, Open Access, Open Source and Open Standards are three concepts that need to receive greater attention in the field of Library and Information Science, as it is believed to be fundamental elements for the change of paradigm of descriptive representation, currently based conceptually on physical item rather than intellectual work. This paper aims to raise and discuss such issues and instigate information professionals, especially librarians, to think, discuss and propose initiatives for such problems, contributing and sharing ideas and possible solutions, in multidisciplinary teams. At the end is suggested the effective creation of multidisciplinary and inter-institutional study groups on the future of cataloging and its impact on national collections, in order to contribute to the area of descriptive representation in national and international level.

Linked data for libraries: benefits of a conceptual shift from library-specific record structures to RDF-based data models

Contemporary metadata principles and standards tended to result in document-centric rather than data-centric; human-readable rather than machine-processable metadata. In order for libraries to create and harness shareable, mashable and re-usable metadata, a conceptual shift can be achieved by adjusting current library models such as Resource Description and Access (RDA) and Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) to models based on Linked Data principles. In relation to technical formats, libraries can leapfrog to Linked Data technical formats such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF), without disrupting current library metadata operations. This paper provides six key recommendations for libraries and standards agencies. These include rising to the challenges and embracing the opportunities presented by current technological trends, adopting minimal requirements of Linked Data principles, developing ontologies, deciding on what needs to be retained from current library models, becoming part of the Linked Data cloud, and developing mixed-metadata (standards-based and socially-constructed) approaches. Finally, the paper concludes by identifying and discussing five major benefits of such metadata re-conceptualisation. The benefits include metadata openness and sharing, serendipitous discovery of information resources, identification of zeitgeist and emergent metadata, facet-based navigation and metadata enriched with links.
