Objective: A growing body of literature describing the role of the librarian as a support for health care based on evidence. In this paper we describe the collaborative process of the librarian in the preparation of a Guide to Clinical Practice Evidence-based about the use of medications in child and adolescent mental health that aims to establish recommendations that would reduce the variability of clinical practice. Methodology: Descriptive study of librarian involvement in the process of developing a practice guideline of drug therapy in mental health in children and adolescents based on the available scientific evidence. Establishing a stable working group with various professionals representing the Dirección General de Farmacia y Productos Sanitarios, de la Oficina Regional de Salud Mental, and a librarian. There are three subgroups which share new themes of child and adolescent mental health. Results: The librarian participates assuming various roles such as project management in union with other member’s team, literature search, reference manager, obtaining documents, critical appraisal of literature, and the authorship of the text of the Guideline. Conclusion: Clinical Practice Guidelines Evidence-Based play a key role in healthcare practice. The complexity of their development requires close collaboration between librarians, clinicians and institutions that are edited. In this communication we identify the possible roles of the librarian describing a particular case.

E-learning is a means of becoming literate, involving new mechanisms for communication, such as: computer networks, multimedia, content portals, search engines, electronic libraries, distance learning, and web-enabled classrooms. Different web based applications (e.g. email, real-time conference, WebCam) are being used as important tools in the process of e-learning. In India situation is far from reality but does not seem to be impossible to achieve the goal of elearning. In this paper, the examples are taken from the point of the view of Library and Information Science.

As the eVALUEd project reaches the end of its research phase, this article seeks to inform practitioners about the development of the online toolkit which will provide help with the evaluation of Electronic Information Services (EIS). The background to the project and research results are described in order to set in context the development of the toolkit and its content. While the project stems from the Higher Education sector, it is hoped that many of the tools will be transferable to other sectors.

One of the principal tasks of a public municipal library is the conservation and diffusion of the patrimony and the local culture, specially in the fund or local section. In the latter years, the regions have seen how the local studies have been proliferating increasingly. The libraries have to answer to the needs of information of their users with the own instruments. And one of the the most basic and more useful is the elaboration of bibliographies, indispensable for the investigator who has many difficulties to know a minimal part of all that is published on his area of knowledge, in a certain place. Due to the great quantity of information that is published in the Vall d'Albaida (department of Valencia Community –Spain-), it has been made the regional bibliography of the Vall d'Albaida. This bibliography integrates all material published on the region, with the purpose of spreading it to the whole community. We present a methodological offer and of computer tools for his application in local or regional areas, having as base to the public municipal libraries.

The European Union constitutes an unique organization, without paragon in the world, conformed by a series of towns that they yearn its mutual and cordial understanding.
A form of getting it is bringing near fundamentally to the public opinion to the Union through the diffusion and promotion of the different activities that this attacks and for what solid mechanisms of information are required. It is due to it that the Union has bet for the creation of nets of centers of information not only spread by the EU´s territory but even for countries non members. These centers, of characteristic different but also with some shared common features, they seek to respond to the expectations of promotion of the activities carried out by the European institutions at the time that they serve as instruments of diffusion of the documentation generated by the Community in the execution of their attributions. The present work seeks to constitute a detailed approach to all them, so much from a general point of view as matter, so that it serves from map to orientate to the investigators and studious of the European Union always forced to the localization and handling of the EU´s information.

This paper describes the OpenURL Framework, both the original `de facto' standard version 0.1, and the NISO standard Z39.88-2004, `The OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services'. The explanation is illustrated by examples from Zetoc, a journal article and conference paper current awareness service available in the UK. Various emerging novel uses of the OpenURL Framework are described. Evaluation studies indicate positive reader appreciation of OpenURL technology providing direct access to discovered articles.

The Information Environment Service Registry (IESR) contains information about collections of resources that the JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) makes available to researchers, learners and teachers within UK Higher and Further Education. In addition, IESR contains details of technical services, both those that make the collections available, and other significant `stand-alone', broker services, for example OpenURL resolvers. The collections cover all disciplines, but include many relevant to Social Scientists. The aim of IESR is to assist other applications, such as portals or virtual learning environments, in the discovery and subsequent use of materials that are relevant to their users' interests. It is a middleware, shared service, primarily intended for machine-to-machine access. But ultimately it should benefit end-users by facilitating more awareness of, and easier access to, relevant resources, maybe through the single point of search that a portal provides.

Collection Management Policy (CMP): A Framework to Achieve Library Goals
Ameen, Kanwal
JZ. None of these, but in this section.
CMP is not a miraculous document that carries solutions to all kinds of collection related problems. But, it is far better to have one than not to have. It makes a complex and subjective process of CM less problematic by devising and documenting the philosophy behind a library’s collecting practice. It may serve as a detailed framework to execute the philosophy of a library. Thus, a written CMP has much more to offer to libraries in the digital and hybrid age-- an age which has mesmerized users with explicit and implicit perceptions regarding electronic resources.

The paper discusses the new scientific search service Google Scholar. This search engine, which is intended for searching exclusively scholarly documents, will be described with its most important functionality and then tested empirically. The study is based on queries against different journal lists: international journals from Thomson Scientific, Open Access journals from the DOAJ list and journals of the German social sciences literature database SOLIS as well as the analysis of result data from Google Scholar. The study shows deficiencies in the coverage and up-to-dateness of the Google Scholar index. Furthermore, the study points up which web servers are the most important data providers for this search service and which information sources are represented. We conclude that Google Scholar has some interesting potentials (e.g. citation analysis, free materials) but can not be seen as a substitute for the use of special literature databases due to a couple of weaknesses (e.g. transparency).

The user-friendly integration of interdisciplinary bibliographic collections does require not only the linking of single information services on a technical tier, it rather demands a model for semantic integration. We propose the concept of semantic heterogeneity treatment as a way to integrate various collections by their inherent semantic structures, namely their indexing languages, thesauri and other knowledge organization systems. Cross-concordances (crosswalks or mappings) between two controlled vocabularies are one way to integrate different databases by mapping their descriptors. The intellectual mapping of controlled vocabularies is portrayed by the example of the German information service infoconnex (http://www.infoconnex.de) with achieves a semantic integration of different bibliographic databases in the fields of social sciences, education and psychology. The automatic transformation service bases on semantic relations and enables users to search simultaneously in several databases without formulating the search query repeatedly and in a database specific way. We show multiple examples where cross-concordances are a well working mechanism of interdisciplinary search.

The process of scholarly research involves the discovery of material of interest, followed by its location and subsequent perusal. Zetoc is a current awareness citation service available to UK researchers for the initial discovery step. This paper highlights some recent discovery enhancements to Zetoc, and describes the subsequent location via OpenURL technology of articles discovered in Zetoc. The later steps within the scholarly research workflow, of location, request and delivery of research literature, are provided by further services, which may be chosen by either institution librarians or individuals. The dissemination of bibliographic citation details as interoperable components enables their use by downstream applications unknown to the source service, thus providing further opportunities for customisation of the location of knowledge.

At the present time, there are 72 Spanish universities, 50 of them are Public Universities and 22 Private Universities, however, just 46 of them have organized archives, 40 correspond to Public centers and just 6 of them to private universities. This difference shows the special necessity, for the conservation of the documentary patrimony of the Spanish universities, of the organization of new Archive services, especially in the private universities.
After a brief introduction on the evolution of the university Archives in Spain, and the general analysis of their organization, made fundamentally around the conclusions of the diverse Conferences and Work Groups organized in the last years by the Confederation of University Archives of Spain (CAU), this article displays the main aspects to consider for the creation of new university Archives, presenting a proposal of Standard Rules for the University Archives, which can serve as reference, specially for the private universities

This paper describes a course-centered approach to the evaluation of academic library collection for instructional program reviews. The method is based on the assessment of collection supporting individual courses by comparing the materials available directly to the library clientele in a
bibliographic database with the items demanded by a course. It hilights the metadata XML application to representing the instructional programs in all it's aspects, joined with the XSLT uses, to obtain an automatic collection evaluation preparing reports to asses in a dinamic way the needs of each course in a shortest time. The technique provides a smarter and practical tool for further selection of resources. Beyond, other technologies associated to the XML metadata can make easy the collection planning, for example, accessing the results of the non existing materials right on an on-line bookstore, like Amazon.com, obtaining this way specific datas about the items needed to be acquired.

The increasing of the new scientific areas, along with the multitude of information items, it's pushing the librarians to find creatively novel ways to gather information for the development of the collection under their responsability. This must definitely change the usual practice of these professionals towards mastering moderns IT tools in order to better analyse a huge volume of data in a shorter amount of time. Hence, this paper discusses a proposal of building metadata of the syllabus plans, within a university to easy the minering some important information out of them as part of a master collection development policy.

GIS (GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM) IN LIBRARIES
The library has to show its own advantage to be able to go on growing and raising funds to exist, to work and to develop. Therefore the library needs to know in depth the area on which it operates, constantly striving to adapt its services to its features, and becoming a point of reference for the community information and knowledge needs.
GIS (Geographic Information System) technology can help the library reach these two objectives, both as analysis and management tool to support the marketing activities, and as enhancement of the traditional Reference Service.
A GIS application enables to relate textual and descriptive data to geographic information, to manipulate and analyse these data, to obtain results from this relationship and to display them on the territory through digital maps; these maps are constituted by superimposing information layers, which, through defined graphical symbols, represent on the region events, conditions and objects whose features are expressed by the descriptive data used.
So that every layer is superimposing the others, it has to be georeferenced and therefore it has to use the same frame of reference (i.e. coordinates) used for the other layers, it has to represent the same area of Earth’s surface and to use the same scale.
Many are the application of GIS technology, which for years have been used in the most diverse fields, for instance in the management of technological networks and of vehicle fleets, or in carrying out the e-government policy.
The library can take advantage from this technology applying it to two macro areas: in-house projects and public services. In the first case, in the perspective of the strategic planning of services, the library can use GIS to define and plan its own set-up in relation to the territory, by measuring and defining its market area, and in relation to the community by tracing the actual profile of feature and needs for its actual and potential users (market profile).
In the second case, the library creates a GIS Reference Service, as an enhancement of the traditional services, to support the activity of community information and to give access to the manifold GIS application available for the users. There are several level of Reference Services, which can be activated depending on the availability of human and financial resources, and depending on the information needs of the community.
Many are the software available to create a GIS service, either local or remote; many are traded by companies, while others are freely available through GPL license. In U.S. an online service devoted to libraries, LibraryDecision, is available through subscription; this service supplies data and geographic analysis tools to support marketing activities.

In March 2003 the Advisory Commission of Libraries and Documentation (Cabid) of the Chilean Universities Rectors Counsel (Cruch) published the 2nd edition of its Standards for Chilean university libraries. Important innovations are introduced, considering that currently not all the students of the universities are attending classes physically, not all the didactic modalities imply the existence of synchronic courses, as well as to keep in mind the opportunities that offers the coexistence of virtual and physical libraries in the same institution.

Building Bridges with Blocks: Assisting digital library and Virtual Learning Environment integration through reusable middleware

Various studies have reported that achieving effective use of increasingly heterogeneous scholarly objects within institutional learning and teaching frameworks is becoming critical to the performance of educational institutions. The integration of digital information environments, such as a University library, within a virtual learning environment (VLE) encapsulates this challenge. This paper presents reusable middleware to achieve effective digital library (DL) and VLE integration. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that the use of open standards and service-oriented architectures (SOA) to build “light” web-services-based middleware is a suitable alternative for embedding digital library information sources in learning and teaching frameworks. We argue that by using open-source and open-standards approaches rather than software and practices developed specifically for a particular VLE product, it is possible to obtain open reusable middleware that can simplify the DL-VLE integration and bridge the functionality of both environments. We hope that our methodology can provide a common foundation on which a variety of institutions may build their own customized middleware to integrate scholarly objects in VLEs. The study has assessed the impact of the VLE-library integration on academic users of both the library and the VLE. Performance issues of the proposed digital library-VLE integration are also discussed. A secondary but important finding of our study is that much more effort is required to open and standardize the closed, restricted and proprietary approach of digital publishers to the reuse of scholarly material. This approach can be a serious obstacle to effective digital library-VLE integration and can limit the publishers’ ability to allow the discovery, integration and reuse of scholarly material. Current research in this area is analyzed and discussed.

What open source webpublishing software has the scientific community for e-journals?

Nowadays a scientific community can use different electronic publishing systems for the e-journals (journal management systems). Open-source ones were developed solely for e-publications' management and now, in 2007, we can say three of them are of general use for e-journals: Digital Publishing System (DPubs), ePublishing toolkit (ePubTk), Open Journal System (OJS). There exists also different content management systems (CMS), yet those were not primarily built for e-journals and are usable only with a special publication module. Finally, the third option is to pay for a service of different publishers and providers with their own publication systems. This paper deals with comparison of the first two options: specialised systems for e-journals on one side and general CMS on the other side. With examples of open-source publication systems we want to compare their advantages and disadvantages, area of aplication, and their functions for the management of the e-journal publishing process.

Phenomena of constantly increasing electronic information services and new publishing models that evolved in the last decade have transformed the conventional libraries into hybrid ones. In a hybrid library environment the user has the ability to search digital and conventional titles, but it cannot usually be done at the same time. In an information seeking procedure the user may find interesting titles at the books repository and afterwards use a computer to locate a relevant digital title. These steps may be reversed or interchanged.
Even though information resources have increased and access points have been multiplied, users are restricted to desktop computers to access the resources. In addition, there is no interface available at the moment that can be used to search both conventional and digital collections. However, thanks to portability of handheld devices, like the PDAs, integration of the physical and digital spaces with multiple access and usage points can be possible. Having the support of a user-location aware system, new information services can be delivered. Usage of these systems keeps gaining ground in information-rich environments like libraries and museums, in order to support users and enrich the information delivered to them.
This paper outlines the current efforts made to design and develop an architecture which will support the typical services provided to library users having access to handheld devices. In particular, we present and analyze:
- the conditions that impose the establishment of such a service
- the particular issues that occur when trying to unify the natural and digital information environments.
- an architecture, based on the new form of the technological infrastructures of an academic library (Library and Information Services of University of Patras) after being extended with the use of a wireless network and handheld devices.

Based on the concept and definition of Documentation as a science it is considered the role that carries out the information professional in interdisciplinary projects. These projects can be set in the field of the basic investigation and practical application to develop multimedia products which supposes the use of different materials (text, imagenes , sound etc). The methodology and the techniques of work used by researchers and information scientists differs because there are differences in the subject fields and sometimes communication problems can arise between these interdisciplinary groups. These problems can be solved by means of a systematized process of communication at a first moment this method can seem costly and unnecessary, it is advisable a foreplanning of the different processes to accomplish the project´s objetives. This paper is based on the work developed by CSIC´s Servicio de Documentación de Humanidades, which serves as support the research projects of some departments specialized scientific fields.

Reflexiones sobre la evaluación de los sistemas de recuperación de información: necesidad, utilidad y viabilidad

LS. Search engines.
The evaluation of Information Retrieval Systems has been developed parallelly to their evolution for reasons of scientific nature, generating the appearance of a great number of proposals to make this process. Assuming that all these proposals - most of which they appear in this work- try to look for a robust mechanism to measure the effectiveness of Information Retrieval Systems, it is not less certain information retrieval is a complex problem to resolve, due to the inherent problems related with translating the user’s information needs to a formalized expression search. The implementation of an objective and simple method to evaluate the effectiveness is the axis where the scene of the evaluation of the information retrieval gravitates.

Brecha digital y educación a distancia a través de redes: funcionalidades y estrategias pedagógicas para el E-learning
Zapata-Ros, Miguel
IZ. None of these, but in this section.
JZ. None of these, but in this section.
Traditional distance learning was born to overcome social, economic and geographical barriers due to access or communication problems, but also due to lack of time, that is to overcome differences in opportunity and quality access to knowledge and training. The last boom of open and distance learning is due to technology and it results from the convergence of two lines of development whose distance has made a bigger divide, being he first one of these lines the need of learning throughout life as a result of the mushrooming growth of scientific and technologic knowledge, technical, industrial and commercial processes, and the lack of answer in the training processes in the organizations, and the second one the increase and generalization of networks and its access which means, in a general way, the possibility to reduce this divide. Nonetheless, technological open and distance learning poses in turn new problems that become new divides or that increase the big divide. It introduces new discriminating elements, new barriers that can help e-learning to become a new divide, since it needs specific training and personal, human, cultural and economic requisites that ask for discriminating knowledge. Definitely, for us, the way to fight this divide is quality management based in the user and in the users’ communities. The fight against this divide must be based in the assessment and quality management of the training activity and not in the profit or in the results, as in the classical approach, nor in the client satisfaction as in the total quality management approach. Our approach to the assessment and quality management of the training activity is based in the users’ learning objectives and in the target communities’ specific learning objectives. Therefore, previously we need an analysis of the favorable features for these objectives that tells us how the requisites derived from them can be translated into quality criteria and how these criteria can be translated into indicators. So, it means an integral quality management based in the student, in the learning and in the communities.

The collections and services are described according to a set of metadata, which is defined by IESR, but is based on open standards wherever possible. The prototype registry is implemented as an XML repository indexed with the Cheshire II information retrieval software, with an associated meta-registry to support browsing and data capture. Several interfaces for server-to-server retrieval of IESR XML descriptions are available, as well as a Web interface.

The JISC Information Environment Service Registry (IESR) (http://www.mimas.ac.uk/iesr/) contains quality descriptions of collections of resources available to researchers, learners and teachers within UK Higher and Further Education. Alongside the collection descriptions, which enable resource discovery, are technical details of the `informational' services that provide access to them, enabling determination of the best access option to a collection of interest. The IESR also contains descriptions of `transactional' services that are not based on an explicit collection but provide a significant service, for example an institution's OpenURL resolver. Additionally the IESR contains details of the parties (agents) that own the collections and administer the services.

Digital library users have to deal with many separate services. This paper describes efforts in the United Kingdom to use OpenURL technology to provide `joined-up' services. The focus is on zetoc, a national electronic service, which enables users to find references in a British Library bibliographic database. zetoc now uses OpenURL technology to provide routes to services, which might give users access to electronic full text versions of references they have found. Data is provided from two questionnaire surveys and an interview programme conducted to explore user responses to these services. These evaluation studies show that users want these integrated services and are extremely positive about them when they work. However, `joined-up' services depend for their success on the access rights that each user has to full text sources in their institution. As a result, the success level in obtaining full text varies considerably between institutions. Users in disadvantageous positions have expressed disappointment and frustration; the service may be regarded as a promise not fulfilled. The paper describes the development of `joined-up services' as a partnership at national and local levels.

I. Information treatment for information services
This paper describes the design of an electronic journals application where the article header information is held as Dublin Core metadata. Current best practice in the use of Dublin Core for bibliographic data description is indicated where this differs from pragmatic decisions made when the application was designed. Using this working application as a case study to explore the specification of a metadata schema to describe bibliographic data indicates that the use of Dublin Core metadata is viable within the journals publishing sector, albeit with the addition of some local, domain-specific extensions.

Planificación de un servicio para inmigrantes dentro de una Biblioteca Pública
Saurin Parra, Julia
JZ. None of these, but in this section.
DC. Public libraries.
The text starts with an approach to the term “culture”, defining it, studying its historical evolution, and the problems to distinguish among terms such as culture, society and civilizatión. Afterwards, other terms related to this, such as “aculturatión” or “multiculturality” will be considered, analysing actual definitions and those diferences in use in relation to similar terms such as “interculturality”. Another term, “inmigratión”, will be studyed from the actual point of view, considering worldwide inmigration and who it's evolving at the present.
From this approach, we will try to develop a library service destinated to this new population and dedicated to these new cultures. To achieve this, we will start from the objectives of librarian planification, studying its definition, objetives, acting fields, elements envolved, main steps etc. We will go from the theory to practicce planifying a librarian service for inmigrants in a public library, studying main steps, objetives, users and so on. We will finish analisying how it works.

The training of information professionals requires an integrative vision that assesses the meaning and importance museums have had and still have. The history of the museums has evolved just as the history of humanity; the origin of the term mouseion, dates back to the worship to the muses in the old Greek regions of Tracia and Beocia. In America, as opposed to Europe, the museums consolidated the nationalist and historic feelings. Museology is the field of knowledge that confers formality and scientific rigorousness to the museum activity. Starting from the dimensions of analysis proposed by van Mensch (1995), the most significant elements of museum knowledge can be established; nevertheless, these dimensions cannot be seen as an abstract atomization of the knowledge in Museology; they are, on the contrary, complementary verifiable elements. While the theoretical-empirical approach is of an especially heuristic character, that of the functional rationality aims to the design of behavior strategies, whereas the critic-philosophical approach seeks to develop a definitive point of view of paradigmatic connotations.

“A Personal Information Adviser”.
A new librarian’s role in the network society
Kisilowska, Malgorzata

JZ. None of these, but in this section.
HZ. None of these, but in this section.
The authors discuss a new librarian’s role (in particular public librarians) in a network society, regarding individualisation of other services offered to the public. There are several topics which have been described recently, and make a prerequisites for such a proposal, like: individualisation as a general trend of social life and economy, individualisation of electronic information services for selected users’ groups, intensification of activities concerning information literacy. The proposal is based on a literature review (mostly referred to the new trends in library and information science), as well as discussion (including SWOT analysis) with the BA students during an “Information Users” course. The role of a Personal Information Adviser (PIA) arises from a need of information in all different fields of human activity. A PIA does not always have to answer any question, but he/she shall either indicate/ select adequate information sources, or teach a method of information searching, i.e. develop information literacy skills in a selected area. Proposed new role of public librarians can be perceived as a way of adapting professional tasks to changes being realized in a modern society, with positive influence in particular in regard of professional image, indispensability, competencies, and attitude.

This article describes and analyses the systems currently used by libraries to provide their users with access to free web resources and it explores the major obstacles for identifying and retrieving these resources. The ways in which libraries organise web resources can be described by three models: making lists, creating databases, and incorporating them into the opac. This study concentrates on the description, identification and characteristics of the latter two approaches, focussing on major experiences with special attention given to the following features in each case: selection criteria, types of descriptions, indexing and classification systems, information retrieval methods, and maintenance policies. Finally, current trends are discussed and considerations are offered as to how Spanish libraries might approach the organisation of web resources.

History of Maps and Important Map Collections in Turkey

Considering the historical process, mankind has produced many information sources and used them in the most effective way when he needs. One of the most known and used of these resources is books. However, there are many information resources in different formats except books. These resources are called non-book materials. The one, which is regarded as the most strategic information resource among the non-book materials, is map. Maps are information resources which can give detailed and strategic information about any part of the world differ from the other information resources. They have been used as widely as books in almost every age of the history. Maps have been drawn and used after discoveries, excursions, and especially military expeditions. Many countries, governments or managers ordered special maps for their countries and/or other countries and paid serious budgets for them. The most important characteristics distinguishing maps from other information resources are that they have many types and they can be used for many purposes. Different applications were developed for organizing them because of the variety of the information they contain. These characteristics of maps put forward that drawing and reading map necessitate a special education. In the study, theoretical information about the process of maps’ occurrence, basic information fields on them, their types, making catalogues and access will be given and the examples from the libraries, having rich map collections in Turkey, will be given.

The new ideas emerge during the early 20th century modified Mexican history, this changes were reflected on the economic, political, social and cultural aspects. Library science as well as bibliography goes through different changes too. Public education lead by Jose Vasconcelos, a great visionary who recognized the national necessity of popular libraries and much more of well train librarians.
“El libro y el pueblo” was a magazine published from 1922 to 1970, the articles appeared during the period of 1922-1926, and from 1928-1935, seems very attach on themes related with the development of Mexican library science; these articles prove that this magazine is an important piece on the construction of the history of library science in Mexico.

This study concerns collaborative virtual reference in French academic libraries. After a brief inventory of these services at the end of the year 2006, the reflexion is based on the particular project of the Paris-Sorbonne SCD (Paris-IV). A methodology is outlined for the organization of digital reference in academic context, in which collaborative work is relevant: it allows these services to achieve their development in universities.

Savoie-Biblio: departmental libraries of the Savoie and Haute-Savoie redefine their territory and their model
At the beginning of the year 2000, a wish to bring together the departmental libraries of Savoie and Haute-Savoie was expressed by the representatives of the two departments. A feasibility study has been the opportunity to challenge the traditional model of departmental lending libraries centred around the quarterly deposit of books with the help of the mobile library. A new model is in the process of emerging with strong central themes: advice and training, shared management of the collections and the promotion of cultural activities. The chosen legal form will permit progressive experimentation with the new model.

Cyber or Siberia? Library skills in transition

This article will present some personal observations of the impact of information technology on the traditional skills of librarians, drawn from experiences in the higher education sector and tainted by an obsessive interest in cataloguing. I believe that the development of information processing and communication technologies has had, is having, and will continue to have, such a profound influence on library and information services that all other factors such as finance and costs, politics, social expectations and management styles pale into insignificance.

This paper describes the results of a breakout group at the 6th Open Archives Initiative Workshop (OAI 6) at Geneva in June 2009, also known as the CERN workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication.
The breakout group focussed on the following issues:
Users have many different needs and interests. Sometimes they are exploring the unknown at other times they would like to revisit some document vaguely remembered. Bibliographies, compilations of highly frequented works, lending records and many other methods were and will be employed to guide researchers towards the publications sought after.
In the realm of electronic publications user behaviour can be observed in new ways. For example it is possible to track the browsing path of a visitor, a user's history is no longer confined to objects actually lended.
Furthermore metadata describing and identifying the documents is obtainable just as easily. Many people are convinced that the combination of these types of data can yield great results, simplifying library searches, shedding light on the shadows of the deep web, or more generally speaking: Giving the user what he really needs. Two of the most outstanding applications of this paradigm are Amazon Recommendations and Google Search String Recommendations. Both are implemented to some extent in some repository solutions, but there is no doubt, that there are other services of which no one has thought before.
The breakout was divided into four sections:
1. Free production (brain storming) of -preferably data based- possible Added-value Services
2. Integration of brainstorming results with ideas gathered in advance by the moderator
3. Estimation of the utility of the elements in the combined set of possibilities
4. Critical evaluation of the possibilities

SAD (Statistics Enquiry Service) of the Institut d'Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat) handles bespoken requests for statistical information from users who need special tables that are not available on the web, or users who can not find the data they they are seeking. It is based on a work-flow software. It complements other dissemination services (library, printed publications, web), and if it is provided with a good speed and quality it allows for a very good image among an influential segment of the population. However, we must put the necessary means for it to be "controlled" in order to disturb as less as possible the work of the Institut's statisticians. Some examples and operational experiences are presented.

The definition and purpose of crowdsourcing and social engagement with users is discussed with particular reference to the Australian Newspapers service http://newspapers.nla.gov.au, FamilySearch http://familysearchindexing.org, Wikipedia http://wikipedia.org, the Distributed Proofreaders http://www.pgdp.net, Galaxy Zoo http://www.galaxyzoo.org and The Guardian MP’s Expenses Scandal http://mps-expenses.guardian.co.uk. These services have harnessed thousands of digital volunteers who transcribe, create, enhance and correct text, images and archives. The successful strategies which motivated users to help, engage, and develop the outcomes will be examined. How can the lessons learnt be applied more broadly across the library and archive sector and what is the future potential? What are useful tips for crowdsourcing? Users no longer expect to be passive receivers of information and want to engage with data, each other and non-profit making organisations to help achieve what may seem to be impossible goals and targets. If libraries want to stay relevant and valued, offer high quality data and continue to have a significant social impact they must develop active engagement strategies and harness crowdsourcing techniques and partnerships to enhance their services. Can libraries respond to the shift in power and control of information and dare to give users something greater than power – freedom?

The definition and purpose of crowdsourcing and its relevance to libraries is discussed with particular reference to the Australian Newspapers service http://newspapers.nla.gov.au, FamilySearch http://familysearchindexing.org, Wikipedia http://wikipedia.org, Distributed Proofreaders http://www.pgdp.net, Galaxy Zoo http://www.galaxyzoo.org and The Guardian MP’s Expenses Scandal http://mps-expenses.guardian.co.uk. These services have harnessed thousands of digital volunteers who transcribe, create, enhance and correct text, images and archives. Known facts about crowdsourcing are presented and helpful tips and strategies for libraries beginning to crowdsource are given.

The popularity of social networking and other Web 2.0 tools requires libraries to adapt to the new world offered by the Internet. This work study the various existing applications of social networks and assess their possible use in designing a social network for university libraries. As a result seeks to build a complete prototype model to be implemented in a library.
The work consists of three parts. The first is an introduction to social networks mentioning aspects as: idea, history and development, content and elements and explores various examples of social networks. The next part is an analysis of library presence in social networks. The author considers possibility of creating social networks for libraries, their advantages and disadvantages, presenting examples of libraries participating in networks or trying to create their own networks. Applications that use libraries present in social networks are analysed. After a draft of social network for a university library is proposed. The project is based on research on potential users. A survey was made among a group of students, staff, library and documentation professionals, in order to collect their views, their needs and their proposals regarding to social networks for libraries.

This paper describes the characteristics of Catalis software as a teaching tool. The analysis is based on the application of quality criteria of software development,
and describes its functionality from the adaptability to
basic requirements of the process of creating a bibliographic record. The analysis is done on the basis of the criteria applied in assessing of any software, and from the specific description of the bonding that has Catalis with bibliographic software standards.
It evaluates the user interface by applying the concepts defined in ISO 9126 that refer to the functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintenance and
portability that software must have and describes the compatibility of Catalis with cataloging rules and bibliographic format.

Koha is an open-source Integrated Library System (ILS) developed in New Zealand and deployed for the first time in January of 2000 for Horowhenua Library Trust. Koha is a full-fledged software with basic and advanced features. Koha has also a strong and wide community of librarians and developers. In particular, it is suitable to all institutions who want to automate their libraries using a system that allows a complete control over data and over software itself. CILEA worked to adapt Koha to Italian libraries and now it is a part of the community.

This paper presents the preservation measures in the film and video archive of the Swiss Television (Schweizer Fernsehen, SF) in its historical dimension. It tries to give a historical summary of the development and the awareness of an archive and of collection strategies at the SRG SSR idée Suisse as well as at the Swiss TV.
The first part of the paper gives an overview of the preservation and archive policy of the SRG since 1970 considering the large amount of source material. The second part puts a specific focus on transfer-projects running at the Swiss TV since 1995. The presentation of the saving of the film and video collection rounds out the preservation history of the Swiss Television.
In the practical third part a historical grid for the collection of broadcasts was developed. A scheme is presented, with which the specific information in the areas of recording, indexing, transferring for each collection can be saved. With a sample collection and a cost-benefit ratio a possible realisation of the conceptions is finally validated.
Further remark:
The following version is an excerpt. The third part (chapter “historical grid”) was left out because the including information is just of interest and relevance to the Swiss Television.

This thesis reflects on how libraries and related organizations, their collections and services can be described in a structured, machine-readable way. It aims at assisting practitioners in enriching library websites with structured, machine-readable, RDF-compliant markup (RDFa).
The reflections result from experiences made developing the Linked Open Data service lobid.org which led to the realization that the decentral curation of organizational information brings significant benefits compared to central directories. To this aim it is investigated by example which informations can be found on library websites to be enriched with structured, machine-readable markup. Based on the results, a comprehensive general model for describing libraries and related organisations is developped. Existing approaches of describing libraries and related organisations in a structured, standardized manner (the German projects Sigelverzeichnis and Deutsche Bibliotheksstatistik as well as WorldCat Registry) are described and common practices of description are worked out. RDF vocabularies are presented which could be useful following existing practices of description. Finally, a concrete proposal is made for the description of libraries and related organisations, exemplarily carried out with two libraries.

The emergence of the Internet has greatly expanded the possibilities of access to reference information in libraries, as the source volume exceeds the limits of existing physical collection of works from their collections. Of course, this can cause the user is overwhelmed by the large amount of information they have at their disposal, which he is not always able to assess and process properly. Given this difficulty, he finds it convenient to leave these tasks in the hands of generic search engines, whose algorithms (more or less complex) do not always return results tailored to their real needs. In this situation, the reference librarian should add to their ability to select relevant sources of information management software tools most appropriate to allow the reader the necessary autonomy in their search for information.

The electronic collections of today's libraries, museums and archives are growing and increasingly have a more relevant role in the holdings. Memory institutions must address users' need to access a widening range of digital artefacts. Often the formats of those artefacts are outdated and they cannot be run or rendered on today's systems any longer. This is where emulation can provide the required digital environments suitable for a given object type. Practical research is being done at Freiburg University for the Open Planets Foundation on how to integrate different emulators for a number of original environments into a single graphical desktop. In this case study, options for future reading room systems like stateless Linux workstations are evaluated and prototypical implementations are demonstrated.

Organizzare la conoscenza con la sequenza di filiazione della Classificazione Colon di S.R. Ranganathan
Bianchini, Carlo
JZ. None of these, but in this section.
The paper deals with the issue of the method of arrangement of the results of a opac search. For this reason, the paper presents the conceptual structure of shelf classified arrangement of documents (filiatory sequence) by Colon Classification.
It shows with examples that filiatory sequence complies with principles provided for bibliographies by Pollard and Krummel, it presents a complete structure of data and relationships provided by actual cataloguing theory, and it manages correctly relationships among a Work and its associated entities (FRBR).
The paper shows that the filiatory sequence expresses a holistic vision of the catalog, creating a complex bibliographic organization that represents with exhaustiveness semantic content, literary relationships, and formal features of the resources. The use of conceptual structure of filiatory sequence in ranking search results is suggested and its relevance for creating new navigating tools is highlighted.
