This work tried to describe the schools and scientific bases of the Social Network, with their structures made under the invisible colleges and social capital; focusing also in the explanation of the techniques in creation of maps for relashion-ship through free softwares (Pajek, CiteSpace and TouchGraph). The practicum de-velopment has been based to turn the mentioned programs into application of cases, where each plataform has shown a different behavior, caused by the self characteris¬tics of each and every informatic resource.

"Ontology-based metadata application for Digital Libraries". An ontology is a formal specification of a conceptualization, usually related to a specific domain of knowledge like library and information science. The metadata application profile along with the documentation of its abstract model can be thought of a primitive ontology of a specific implementation. Classification themes and thesaurus, which have been used for a long time in the library and information arena, are also a source of formal ontologies. After formalization processing and encoded with standard ontology languages, these kinds of concept systems can be very useful to establish a metadata service based on ontology services and fulfill the high level interoperability of digital libraries. And many languages and tools used to establish formal Ontology are introduced and comparatively analyzed in this paper.

This paper summarized the designing and implementation of a metadata application profile derived from multi metadata standards and specifications for CHINESE CULTURAL CELEBRITIES' MANUSCRIPTS LIBRARY (CCCML). After an introduction to the general considerations, principles, procedure approaches and characteristics of the resources, the metadata application profile composed of core elements and their qualifiers have been given in detail. Then, we explained the system functional requirements, metadata encoding schema and the rules and schemes for cataloging, as well as the authority control consideration. At last, a few common issues in designing metadata application profile have been concluded.

The MatPromo database was created in October 2002 as a project of IFLA’s Management & Marketing Section. The objective of the project consists of creating a database of images of objects and documents designed for promoting all kinds of libraries in any country. The images are described and are accessible through a user-friendly interface for searching internationally. The aim of the database is to facilitate ideas for promotional campaigns of library services. The database is hosted on the project server of the University of Barcelona’s Department of Library and Information Science (http://bidoc.ub.es/pub/matpromo/) and a link to it is made available from the web of IFLA’s Management & Marketing Section (http://www.ifla.org/VII/s34/). This article attempts to introduce MatPromo and explain its technical characteristics, content, and usefulness for librarians around the world.

Content in Distributed servers, located at various locations, mostly non homogenous in nature with different platforms, different OS, different format becoming a big challenge for information professionals. This paper proposes a model for how to map relational bibliographic databases such as library databases/catalogues and bring these content in to a single homogenous platform irrespective of its multiple platforms and provides access through a single (gateway or portal) and what are the tools and techniques to be used. A detailed discussion on tool for data mining from various RDBMS, a common pool for data mapping, interfacing non homogenous data mines at distributed locations through ontological Metadata approach and display through XML etc are presented in this paper. The implementation of the proposed model by data mining, mapping the bibliographical relations, pool for interfacing, and mechanism of accessing the content through are also described.

This article discusses the growing need for tools or systems that will provide more effective management of and improved user access for journal collections, especially for e-journals. The author briefly describes initial efforts at the local library level to develop management systems and mentions the rise of vendor-supplied solutions, which have become very popular. In spite of the current popularity of vendor-based solutions, the author argues that there is still a niche for locally developed journal management systems. One such system, developed at the author's home institution, Taylor University, is featured as a case study.

In the last two decades, we have witnessed an explosive growth in our capabilities to both collect and store data, and generate even more data by further computer processing. In fact, it is estimated that the amount of information in the world doubles every 20 months. Our inability to interpret and digest these data, as readily as they are accumulated, has created a need for a new generation of tools and techniques for automated and intelligent database analysis. Consequently, the discipline of knowledge discovery in databases (KDD), which deals with the study of such tools and techniques, has evolved into an important and active area of research because of theoretical challenges and practical applications associated with the problem of discovering (or extracting) valuable, interesting and previously unknown knowledge from very large real-world databases. Many aspects of KDD have been investigated in several related fields such as database systems, machine learning, intelligent information systems, statistics, and expert systems. In the first part of our study (Part I), we discuss the fundamental issues of KDD as well as its process oriented view with a special emphasis on modelling association rules. In the second part (Part II), a follow-up study of this article, association queries will be modelled by formal concept analysis.

In this study we utilize formal concept analysis to model association rules. Formal concept analysis provides a topological structure for a universe of objects and attributes. By exploiting the relationship between objects and attributes, formal concept analysis then introduces an entity called a concept. A concept is a set of attributes and objects. The attributes are maximally possessed by the set of objects and similarly the objects are the maximal set which all possess the set of attributes. Formal concept analysis deals with formal mathematical tools and techniques to develop and analyze relationship between concepts and to develop concept structures. We propose and develop a connection between association rule mining and formal concept analysis. We show that dependencies found by an association query can be derived from a concept structure. We have extended formal concept analysis framework to the association rule mining. We use analysis of market-basket problem, a specific case of association rule mining, to achieve this extension. This extension provides a natural basis for complexity analysis of the association rule mining. This extension can also help in developing a unified framework for common data mining problems.

Surveys the application of computer and communication technology to manage information for agricultural research, education, extension and development in India. Covers the institutions supported by CGIAR, ISNAR, ICAR and similar organizations. Critically evaluates existing research and development systems in the agricultural sector under Government of India, State Government and State Agricultural Universities. Points out that the failure to modernize library systems to function as the heart of agricultural information systems has resulted in the ineffectiveness of our major programmes in the agricultural field. The need for integration of library, information and extension is stressed. Attitudinal changes required are discussed and suggestions for improving the situation put forward.

Need for developing Information Systems in Indian vernacular languages is now felt more than ever. Use of local scripts becomes inevitable in the creation of Information Systems for digitized palm leaves, copper plates, manuscripts and local documents. M-ISIS is a localized version of CDS\ISIS for Malayalam language, which is programmed using ISIS32.DLL created by UNESCO. It is a bibliographic information system for Malayalam documents using Malayalam script. Together with the techniques of 'Nitya Digital Archives' it searches using Malayalam script and retrieves both references and full texts. A special font 'Meera.ttf' is designed and a rendering engine to process conjunct formation is programmed, enabling both data entry and query formulation in Malayalam. Paper describes the creation of a digital archive of 'Mathrubhumi' weekly. A few issues of the weekly were scanned to PDF using Adobe Acrobat. Catalogue data of every individual article was fed into a CDS\ISIS database through a data entry worksheet designed in M-ISIS. The prototype shows immense possibilities of localization of CDS\ISIS in Indian languages.

Veri Tabanı Tasarımının Önemi ve Normalizasyon Süreci
Fenerci, Tülay
HL. Databases and database Networking.
LN. Data base management systems.
LQ. Library automation systems.
Database management systems are major tools which provide management of organizations' operational data via computers. However their efficient usage depends on how well database tables are organized. When undesigned data is stored in the database there probably occur some problems such as data repeating and waste of storage space. In order to prevent such problems a normalization process is applied to tables. Normalization is a process of refining relations where relations are formed by gathering attributes. Hence problems such as repeating of data, dependency and combined relationships are solved with normalized base tables. Therefore database design is an important fact in efficiency of database management systems.

Semantic information stored in an extended denormalized database

The research project, which we hereby detail, has been utterly dedicated to explain the birth and evolution of an information repository called XTMdb whose basic principles are bound to integrate complementary tagging languages such as: SKOS; MODS, Dublin Core and/or GILS with the paradigm of topic maps. Once the information processing was completed, we could test it by means of designing an efficient information retrieval process which, at the same time, allows the information resources description to be extended in real time. On the one hand, the main objective lies in obtaining greater expressivity, independence in relation to the tagging language, as well as improved searches since the search can be centred on the topic concept. On the other hand, certain aspects remain outstanding which can lead to interesting discussions such as: the topic maps paradigm can provide added value visual information, it helps make the development of a support system decision easy and soft-computing techniques can solve a considerable amount of problems in relation to the information retrieval process.

A Feasibility Report prepared by Centre for Agricultural Informatics in 1995 on establishing a Campus Network for Kerala Agricultural University’s (KAU) main campus (at Vellanikkara, Thrissur) and a state-of-the art Electronic Data Complex in its University Library premises. For the dissemination of topical awareness and global information to those in agricultural sector of the State, KAU needs to build a Campus LAN and state-of-the art Agricultural Digital Library and Data Complex within its central library. This can become a show case of the electronic age in agriculture and allied disciplines and will promote, propagate and catalogue the agricultural economy that India is so dependent on. The data complex will be a cached repository of agricultural information available worldwide, besides acting as a data silo for research forums, concurrent research, electronic publishing and global bulletin boards. The scattered campuses of KAU and allied institutions also need to be linked through electronic bridges that enable spontaneous exchange of information between the agricultural Diaspora of students, faculties, researchers, extension workers and administrators. The report covers mandate of the proposed system, detailed discussion on computer and communication stack that KAU Campus Wide Information System and Network needs, the architecture prescription, network design, MultiStack and DEChub 900 options available, host environment, financial terms, implementation methodology, installation support continuum, network synthesis and integration, systems engineering support, time frames and the administrative arrangements required. Open Network, with Protocol Switching and Networked Systems Management based on Digital's enVISN Networking Architecture and Enterprise Management Solutions is recommended. Detailed Technical literature and specifications of each and every item of computer and communication stack and solution recommended is appended to the report. Even though the report was prepared in 1995 it can be of interest for critical studies on history of ICT development in India especially in agricultural sector and for comparison of quality of systems and recommendations of a specific time in the past.

Our objective is the generation of schematic visualizations as interfaces for scientific domain analysis. We propose a new technique that uses thematic classification (classes and categories) as entities of cocitation and units of measure, and demonstrate the viability of this methodology through the representation and analysis of a domain of great dimensions. The main features of the maps obtained are discussed, and proposals are made for future improvements and applications.

Knowledge accumulated in a society is recorded in its language. It is the base on which development process occur and is a capital resource which needs to be equitably distributed in a democratic system. ICT can undertake this function and empower and emancipate the backward people if Information Systems can be developed using the language/script of the people to cater to their day today vital information needs. Kerala has invested millions of rupees for Information Infrastructure development claiming to make information accessible to the un-reached. But the development concentrating on infrastructures disregarded ‘information’ part; especially applications for managing content in local language. This failure was due to non availability of Malayalam Language Technology. Malayalam Script which got final shape at the time of Tunjath Ezhuttachan and preserved as it is in printing by Benjamin Bailey (1821) and Herman Gundert who developed technology to suit the specificities of the language and script was modified and deformed by native scholars since 1970 to suit the English Typewriters. Adopting the same for computers also led to chaos and confusion. Digitizing local content was impossible till Rachana revived the original script that can be processed aas per their syntactic and semantic relations. The paper gives a birds eye view of Malayalam Language Technology development through DOS, ASCII, Windows and Unicode standards by C-DAC, CIRD, C-Dit, Rachana Aksharavedi etc. Covers also history of Information System development in Malayalam from the manual one; Malayalam Granthasooji of Sri. K.M. Govi to the digital systems developed by St. Mary's College, Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Brennen College, Vimala College, State Central Library, etc. Discusses the essential Information systems remaining to be developed in Malayalam like those on indigenous knowledge covering nattarivu, kattarivu, kadalrivu etc; indigenous medicines like otttamooli, siddha, unani, ayurveda, visha chikitsa etc. More than 90 % of the above recorded knowledge is in old script. So without the power to process it reliable systems in Malayalam can not be built up. The study opines that development of Malayalam language technology with provision for use of OCR, spell check etc for original script is a priority area in ICT development.

Open Access (OA) journals in some subject areas can be overlooked by existing OA database providers. Subject bibliographers at the Colorado School of Mines Library collected OA journals as part of their collection development responsibilities, and in the process identified 48 overlooked OA journals. The titles were uploaded to the Gold Rush e-journal management system, making them findable by all GoldRush users. The motives, methods, and analysis of this collaborative project are discussed.

Herramientas de software libre para la gestión de contenidos = Open source tools for content management
Tramullas, Jesús
LN. Data base management systems.
LJ. Software.
Information and documentation services available on the Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. The logical evolution of the Internet over the last 10 years has been producing a replacement of static web pages and documents by dynamically generated documents. This is due both to user interaction with work processes and flows defined by service creators and to the availability of growing information repositories. This has meant a progressive evolution from a concept of web page publishing which was quite simple in its origins to more complex and differentiated schemes relying on procedures and techniques based on information management. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting them has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of combining classical information management techniques within organizations with the particular features of the digital environment.
This evolution which has been accelerating during the first years of the 20 th Century has had an impact not only information management methods and techniques but also on the very technology used for information management; and consequently the market for products and services (GILBANE, 2000). If it is true that during the second half of the 1990's we could distinguish between products for document management, information retrieval, etc., since the turn of the century there has been a convergence between all platforms. Nowadays it has become easy to find solutions that intend to be global and to provide support for the whole process of information management within an organization. The kind of tools that have been developed to serve this purpose have been labeled Content Management Systems (CMS) and have become integrated with document management systems as well as with those dealing with information retrieval. To this we must add that keeping control over processes has become a key element within the current conception of information management. This explains why processes are generally accompanied by workflow systems. The sum of these factors enables us to outline a scenario in which documentary management tools have been incorporating the range of capabilities which are necessary for managing the processes which create, store, treat and present information in the digital environment.
This does not however imply that there exists a total convergence between content management systems and document management systems. On the market we may find content management systems which do not provide the correspondingly desirable documentary capabilities and vice versa. It is also impossible to consider content management and record management to be identical. Yes they are intimately linked, but they are not the same. It is only by studying and evaluating the features and capabilities of available tools that it is possible to determine whether they can provide an adequate solution for a specific problem or context. This issue is further complicated by existing differences between web content management and content management for companies; literature and commentary about these can be found in specialized reports and documents published by companies working in this sector. Moreover, the growing complexity of many organizations' portals, both internal and external, which are supported by content management systems, as well as the digital publishing processes necessary for their production, makes content management systems develop as mutilayered applications which often reach high levels of complexity.
On the human side, content management tools can only be understood within a collaborative and distributed work environment, for it is only with this kind of entourage that their full potential can be realized. From the reading of the previous paragraphs it can be deduced that, as opposed to traditional passive document treatment approaches , the more up-to-date tools have widened the limits of record treatment, extending all the way from the creation process for its initial stages, and reaching the processes of new publication and personalization for its final stages. This leads to the configuring of a circular or iterative diagram for documentary treatment. To this we must add the necessary reflection over the concept and features of digital documents. The life cycle of digital documents shows significant changes over the traditional life cycle of documents, with the concept of document itself evolving in much the same way. It has become obvious that the way in which informative- documentary activities are carried out must be reformulated in order to face the new digital environment.

Based on the Model of Management of Technology (GT) for Information Units (UI) of the Universities of Medellín, the authors have selected and adapted a GT model that integrates the settings in which the academic IU operates in terms of its administrative tasks and its strategic and operational planning,specifying the components of each and the GT tools that make their interaction possible, in addition to measuring and controlling its development and applications to the various processes of the UI.This article presents a condensed report of this research project, in particular the results of the diagnostics of the UI belonging to institutions of higher education in Medellín, Colombia, the relation between the diagnostics and the model, the critical actors that may be obstacles for the GT in a UI. It also serves as a proposal for a system of management indicators for the GT processes.

Búsqueda de información en la Web por profesionales de salud en una universidad venezolana. Un estudio transversal

LC. Internet, including WWW.
LN. Data base management systems.
The increasing use of databases in all areas of knowledge has produced important changes in scientific practice. These databases allow for more efficient searches of indexed and published journal literature in all areas of specialisation. This study attempted to learn which strategies were used by faculty members of the Health Sciences Schools of the University of Los Andes in searching for scientific information. We performed a cross sectional study in which the faculty of the departments of Medicine, Dentistry and Nutrition were interviewed to identify their skills in searching. The majority of the professors considered themselves as "good" or "very good" in their skills in using the Internet. However, 71% of them use general search engines to retrieve scientific information, whereas only 29% used databases exclusively on health, such as Medline, Lilacs, Cochrane and others. The main difficulties reported for accessing full text articles are their cost and the means of acquiring them. We conclude that the university faculty members do not know which are the best tools for obtaining reliable scientific information. Hence the quality of the documentation they use for staying informed and for their future research is questionable.

The Documentation and Information Unit of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), decided to create a digital library by using the data and information included in its collections, concerning the various historical and other interesting buildings, starting from the region of Attiki.
The data and part of photographs on buildings recorded in the database are taken from the TEE library books and periodical collections. In each building record, all relevant references (from books, reports, articles etc.) are cited. The structure of the database is similar to other international databases, either accessible through the Internet or found in bibliography. For each building, the data elements stored are its name, the creators (architects and others), the architectural style, the building materials, the geographic region and exact address and subject terms. There are also included comments of architectural and historiacl interest. The record
structure is based on Unimarc. All above information which describe a building correspond to Unimarc fields, either to exactly equivalent, or to the most "relative", if there is not a full equivalence. Existing Unimarc fields were used for all information, so that no local fields 9XX had to
be developed. The TEE library program ADVANCE ver. 6.7.15 of Geac was used for the implementtaion of the digital library. A separate buildings database was created and specific modifications on indexes as well as equivalent relations to Z39.50 indexes were implemented. The interface was also modified, so that in each record, the pictures of the buildings are presented as thumbnails, and not as links on field 856. The legend corresponding to each picture (subfield z) is also presented, which is also a searchable data element, making one more significant modification
on the indexes. The database is accessible on the Internet, either through a Z39.50 client or on the website http://opac.tee.gr.

The paper stresses on the ways how different information on manuscript studies could be encoded, how that encoding should be represented for interchange, and what kind of methods of searching are used. The further development of the Sofia Computerized Manuscript Corpus of Data is related with the integration of different aspects of language, text and paleography research of medieval Slavic manuscripts. The paper presents some results from the ongoing work and proposes new ideas for the further development of such a projects with Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) in the framework of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). The paper will focus also on standardization problems, copyright questions, teamwork organization and methodological difficulties in the development of electronic resources and their implementation in the university education.

The World Wide Web is rapidly being adopted by libraries and database vendors as a front end for bibliographic databases, reflecting the fact that the Web browser is becoming a universal tool. When the Web is also used for bibliographic instruction about these Web-based resources, it is possible to build tutorials incorporating actual screens from a database. The result is a realistic, highly interactive simulation of database searching that can provide a very detailed level of instruction.

This guide describes the functions of the personal bibliographic software EndNote Web.
The computer and content industries are working for years in the development of the bibliographic managers. These programs allow us to create, organize, search and shape bibliographical references, facilitating the incorporation of cites and references in the manuscripts, using standards of style as APA, Vancouver, etc. There are many bibliographic managers on the market: Reference Manager, ProCite, WriteNote, EndNote... In recent years a new generation has been born of these products whose novelty is the storage and access of bibliographic databases through remote servers. There are two programs in this new generation of products: RefWorks and EndNote Web.

Facing the need of developing a tool to diagnose and audit informational flow charts in organizations that understand information as an intangible asset of high value, it is proposed a systemic methodology of analysis, based on a managerial strategic approach. The tasks and solutions forseen for each step, as well as their technologies, resources, and the place of the human factor, are exposed from the perspective of the process approach. By means of a software designed for the study of graphs and networks, the databases of every subsystem are created and their informational interrelation is shown. The study of a case illustrates the proposal.

The permanently increasing percentages of visitation and continuously extending possibilities of support of more operations in combination with the requirements of public in which they are addressed, rendering essential the functionnal planning of their network places, ensuring thus the efficient and satisfactory search of information. Aim of this work is the study of the usability of libraries' network places, as these expand dynamically in the internet shaping a new reality for the science of information. More specifically, are examined analytically the significance of usability, its importance for the planning and the growth of libraries' web pages, in juxtaposition with the more usual problems that are recorded and reported by a big part of users. It follows analytic presentation of different methods that is mainly used in the bibliography for their measurement. Finally, becomes hypothetical presentation of methods of usability measurement, that would be potentially used by a library, so that are evaluated individually the services that are provided through the web page.

Library subject gateways (LSGs) are collections of databases and other information resources, arranged by subject, that have been assembled, reviewed and recommended by specialists, usually librarians. These library developed gateway collections support research and reference needs by identifying and pointing to recommended, academically-oriented web pages.
Back at beginning of SGs libraries used to develop such tools by creating HTML coded web pages without using resource management software or any metadata description standards. These days, several open source software that support metadata description standards, data harvesting, web technology standards for SG creation and management have been developed providing the opportunity to every institution to create such a tool alone or in a cooperative with other institutions basis. On top of all such software does not demand any knowledge of HTML coding from the SG editors.
THIRA was developed under PLOEGIS: from information to knowledge project (Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training ΙΙ - OPEIVT ΙΙ)
After extensive bibliographic literature review on LSGs a list of mandatory characteristics was developed to define the core features of software the Library was looking for the creation and management of its SG. Based on the characteristics list the project team (both librarians and IT personnel) selected Scout Portal Toolkit because it was virtually turnkey, very inexpensive to maintain and operate, easy for non-technical staff to set up and populate with metadata, conformed to international standards for metadata, data harvesting and web technology.
Scout PT comes with a Dublin Core Element Set and it took a few adjustments in order to support the metadata description of the resources held by the Library. Its Controlled Name Flag allows the usage of any thesaurus and its Classification Flag is open to any classification scheme. The project team selected the NDC’s bilingual List of Subject Headings for the subject description of the resources and the Australian Standard Classification of Education to create the Thematic Index.
Regarding the technical aspect of the application, extensive additions to Scout’s source code were made in order to meet the requirements of the Library including changes to the database schema. The most fundamental issue was multi-language support (English and Greek) both in the application interface (menus, forms, etc) and in the bibliographical data (support for separate trees for each language). After adding multi-language capabilities to the application, the Library personnel proceeded to translating all forms, views and messages appearing in Scout in Greek. Furthermore, an alphabetic index of resources was added to the browsing options. Since this type of browsing was not provided in the original toolkit, the corresponding index was built from scratch. Finally, changes were also necessary in the metadata fields used in advanced search forms in order to provide the users with additional search options when looking for resources.
The initial testing of the application included 311 databases held by the library at that moment. The conclusions drawn of this face highlighted some necessary improvements. These improvements mainly concerned the browsing capabilities offered to users which were initially limited to either resource type or resource thematic description, i.e it was not possible to view resources of a specific type (e.g. databases or electronic journals) for a given topic. In this direction, links were initially added to allow viewing only databases and more elaborate filtering capabilities were subsequently implemented.

The rise of internet has prompted image distribution agencies to market their stocks of images over the network. The present article evaluates existing systems for managing both image retrieval and copyright control that have been developed or applied by the major digital image banks. An assessment is also offered of the situation in Spain. In the discussion of image management systems, criteria are applied that relate to the conceptual analysis as well as to the inherent properties of the images.

IsisMarc client-server is a version of IsisMarc to which, drawing on the division in originally existing layers in the tool, has been replaced the layer of storage by a set of web services invocations that allow you to face a radical change of architecture virtually without noticed by the user, at least in regard to the interface and behaviour of the tool that uses daily (except for the logical response remote times). It comprises two major components: IsisMarc client and IsisMarc server. The server component: 1) Has a "controller" like Model View Controller (MVC) one, which validates the requirements of clients and runs a default set of actions. 2) The protocol of communication between client and server consists in XML codified under UTF-8. 3) It has been provided a basic set of functionalities which are dedicated to the edition of the databases FDT21, FMT21 and PFT21. 4) It adds a conceptual structure for the administration of blockades of records in view an outline of cataloguing cooperative based on the Internet. 5) It introduces the concept of "virtual field" representing the relationship between bibliographic and authorities databases. 6) Has been added new tracks for importing MARC records implementing UTF-8 codification that is the way that tends most of the free Z39.50 sources.
This work presents the experience of a collaborative work using typical tools of the draft open software limited to a small academic community, generating a case of redesign product which aims to resolve current needs and to the same time contribute to the gradual adoption of a tool that will generate innovations of disruption in the technological field of libraries Latin America: BIREME-ABCD

Open source software is, software that users have the ability to run, copy, distribute, study, change, share and improve for any purpose. Open source library software’s does not need the initial cost of commercial software and enables libraries to have greater control over their working environment. Library professionals should be aware of the advantages of open source software and should involve in their development. They should have basic knowledge about the selection, installation and maintenance. Open source software requires a greater degree of computing responsibility than commercial software. Library professionals do not think seriously about the advantages of open source software for automation and hence are reluctant to use it. They do not have the expertise to support open source software. Paper highlights major open source library software.

The INIDEP Library (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, Argentina), has worked for already two decades with ISIS software, and now since the ISIS3 – 3rd ISIS World Congress last September 2008 held in Río de Janeiro, Brasil, with the launching of ISIS-Network Based Plataform (NBP), it is confronting the challenge to migrate to the new ABCD System. The ABCD, until June 2009 in Beta version, is an integrated library management software comprising the basic library functions. It is “Free and Open Source Software” (FOSS), freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve; FOSS nowadays is becoming a serious option that all libraries must consider as part of any software procurement process.
The INIDEP Computing Center and The Library faced the need to solve the metadata retrieval and digital storage of 9 types of Internal Technical Reports, produced by INIDEP scientists, core institutional grey literature, most of them assessment reports for the Fisheries Authority, with a great variety of circulation level restrictions.
With this purpose, a Referential Database with ABCD was recommended and developed. The final product highly satisfied the demand of the INIDEP Scientific Administrators because the local web-interphase is easy to handle by inputters; the possibility of data output in Excel format of great value for scientific evaluation purposes, and many other interesting features.

The INIDEP Library (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, Argentina), has worked for already two decades with ISIS software, and now since the ISIS3 – 3rd ISIS World Congress last September 2008 held in Río de Janeiro, Brasil, with the launching of ISIS-Network Based Plataform (NBP), it is confronting the challenge to migrate to the new Automation of Libraries and Documentation

El proceso de creación de una base de datos web
Marcos, Esperanza
Vela, Belén
LN. Data base management systems.
LC. Internet, including WWW.
HL. Databases and database Networking.
The need for making information available on the Web, so that it can be accessed from anywhere, has resulted in many new web-based database sites. In many cases the data are unorganised with frequent duplication of information. This informal organisation and information redundancy make site maintenance a much more difficult task, giving rise to inconsistencies, data that is difficult to access, etc. The database community knows that one way of avoiding these problems is to make use of the facilities provided by technology. But the development process of databases on the web is different than that of traditional databases. Therefore it is necessary to adapt the classical database development methodologies (process as well as techniques, notations and models) for working with web databases. This paper outlines the main methodologies for creating web databases and sums up the Midas/db methodology, developed by the Kybele Research Group of the University Rey Juan Carlos, in Madrid.

The objetive of this study is to offer a clear and practical overview to the Chemical Scientist, applying quantitative methods on the two most extended platforms of scientific information nowadays: Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) and Scopus (Elsevier). It was carried out a specialized search in the area of the chemical engineering in both databases between 1999 and 2006. Through the articles recovered in the searches during those ten years and the journals recovered in 2006, it is analyzed the possible correlation between both systems; the pattern of growth that they show and certain parameters of that growth; the overlapping among the two databases, the dispersion of the articles in the journals and concentration measures, between others. The results show the existence of a high likeness between Web of Science and Scopus, turning out complementary but not exclusive, regarding their possible use for the chemical engineers.

The libraries of our country have initiated the computerization of some of its systems or services, ICT's contribution is greater and necessary in many cases,
therefore it is necessary to be updated and abreast of new software that enable access to all documentary information for internal and external users of an information unit.
The ISIS Software was incorporated in the approach of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), and UNICODE structure support, to be completely open and multilingual, which best fits to promote sustainability and the creation of shared knowledge with librarians and information workers.
The integrated system ABCD (Automation of Libraries and Documentation Centres), aim at integrated management processes and automated operation of libraries and online, its technology architecture is based on services, use of Web Standards, open protocols, innovation and integration with new methodologies and technologies of information and
communication, multi-language platform, user accessibility and safety best practices by international standards.
We report administrative and end user characteristics with a case applied to bibliographic databases of the Library and Documentation Service INIDEP Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development) and the benefits of its implementation in the short term.

Retrieving terminological information on the net. Are linguistic tools still useful?

LN. Data base management systems.
LS. Search engines.
In this communication we present a comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of search engines (SE) and linguistic tools (LT) to retrieve terminological information from the net, in the context of specialized translation tasks. For achieving that goal, an experiment with translators has been carried out. The results indicate that SE are more effective than LT in situations where the answer is partially ignored by the translator (i.e. the translator is hypothesizing one or several possible answers in the target language before searching). On the other hand, LT have not been either more appropriate in situations where the translator showed total ignorance of the possible answers before searching.

Winisis, herramienta para bibliotecarios
Giordanino, Eduardo Pablo
LN. Data base management systems.
The major features of the Winisis software are:
a) the handling of variable length records, fields and sub fields, thus saving disk space and making it possible to store greater amounts of information;
b) the handling of repeatable fields;
c) a data base definition component allowing the user to define the data to be processed for a particular application;
d) a data entry component for entering and modifying data through user-created data base specific worksheets;
e) an information retrieval component using a powerful search language providing for field-level and proximity search operators, in addition to the traditional and/or/not operators, as well as free-text searching;
f) a powerful sort and report generation facility allowing the user to easily create any desired printed products, such as catalogues, indexes, directories, etc.;
g) a data interchange function based on the ISO 2709 international standard used by leading data base producers;
h) an integrated application programming language (CDS/ISIS Pascal and the ISIS_DLL), allowing the user to tailor the software to specific needs;
i) functions allowing the user to build relational data bases, though CDS/ISIS is not based over a relational model;
j) powerful hypertext functions allow to design complex user interfaces.
A Windows interface between CDS/ISIS and IDAMS, the UNESCO software for statistical analysis, has also been developed.
CDS/ISIS for Windows was created as a multi-lingual software, providing integrated facilities for the development of local linguistic versions. Thus, although UNESCO distributes only the English, French and Spanish versions of the package, user-developed versions exist in virtually all languages, including special versions which UNESCO helped in developing, for Arabic, Chinese and Korean.

Introducción a los utilitarios CISIS y la interfaz IAH
Giordanino, Eduardo Pablo
LN. Data base management systems.
HL. Databases and database Networking.
LJ. Software.
CISIS Interface is a library of functions developed in
portable C programming language, specially designed to
interface MicroISIS data bases without calling any of the MicroISIS software.
MX is a general CISIS Interface testing program. It selectively performs all the CISIS Interface portable
functions, according to its calling parameters.
CISIS was designed and implemented at the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health Sciences Information - BIREME, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/OPS/OMS).
CISIS Interface supports MicroISIS master file input and update, inverted file input, search language, formatting
language, etc. CISIS applications have the capability to
manipulate several data bases at the same time.
The MX program loops through a master file and produces output for each input record depending on the supplied
options, such as record limits, print format specifications, record selection, data base joins,
pattern change procedures and field update functions.
Input may also be an ISO file or a sequential plain
file. Output may be an ISO file or another master file.
The CISIS Interface may process multiple master file records and inverted file terms from one or more databases. It is an efficient tool for the development of applications requiring programming capabilities which is not offered by MicroISIS. This tutorial contains practical examples and commands.

Diferencias introducidas en el Sistema de Información Bibliográfica de la CEPAL: análisis comparativo 1984 -1993
Giordanino, Eduardo Pablo
Mangione, Fernanda
LN. Data base management systems.
It is an analysis of the changes which have been made in the Bibliographic Information System from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, spanish acronym: CEPAL) from its 1984 version to the new 1993 version, as well as the different decision-making criteria which affect the policies of the information centres and libraries which use the System. Some individual cases of information entry are studied in both of the system versions so as to identify the changes which have been made, their relationship to the Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules, Second Edition (AACR2) and their importance in information retrieval. A comparative table of the 1984 and 1993 versions of the "Field Definition Table" is included. We study the new proposed bibliographic levels, highlighting some relevant cases, and we propose some considerations concerning the entry of acronyms, keywords, etc., so as to permit the unification of criteria in all the information centres and libraries which use the CEPAL System.

The paper looks into the need for developing full text digital archives and libraries with programmes that can process Indian vernacular languages. Use of local scripts becomes inevitable in the creation of Information systems for digitized palm leaves, manuscripts and other local documents. Also discusses about the importance of conceiving an alternate algorithm for digital archives that is capable of searching and retrieving individual pages rather than whole documents, which is the current fashion among international packages like GreenStone, DSpace, Eprint, etc. Traces out the historical development of the package 'Nitya Archives' which can be used to create multi lingual digital archives in Indian languages and describes in detail the major projects implemented using it.

Systémy ERM: Co je dobré vědět před tím, než systém nakoupíme/vytvoříme a implementujeme
Beitlová, Michaela
HP. e-resources.
JB. Serials management.
LN. Data base management systems.
An Electronic Resource Management System (ERMS) is a software which helps the librarians to manage detailed information about subscribed e-resources. When the library needs an ERMS? The more a library spends in e-resources the more it is possible it needs an automatized tool for to manage them. An Integrated Library System (ILS) has almost each library but an ILS is not able to manage all e-resource information. On the other side suitable ERMS can easily cooperate with an ILS. It is important to ask many questions before the work on choosing/developing and implementing an ERMS starts. It is necessary to define what the library really needs, what is just a wish and what is not important. The answers on all the questions about library staff, finances and e-resources workflow tells a lot about the future appropriate ERMS.

Dspace is an open source software for building digital repositories which preserves and enables easy access to all types of digital content. Dspace is the choice of HypatiaSalud, Repositorio
Institucional del Sistema Sanitario Público de Andalucía, for being free open source software, complying Junta de Andalucia standards and policies; having a large community of users and developers; and covering HypatiaSalud necessities and open access policies requirements.
A distinctive goal in the HypatiaSalud DSpace configuration and customization has been including different aspects related to peer review process and document access rights. Due to that approach involves complex software tasks, we decided to use virtualization technology to make easier that tasks.
Material and Method:
In Material, it has been described the information about what version of DSpace has been used and the complementary software; and the one for the building of the virtual machine in order to install into it the repository software. The utilized method consisted on:
-Setting off three work environment of DSpace: two of them, virtual environments (development and testing environments); and a third one, production environment, in a real server.
-The customization of DSpace for HypatiaSalud, mainly in: the input form, the showed fields in the item display; and the filters on the advanced search, in all related with peer review process and access rights to the materials; and the same way, the compliance to Dublin Core Schema.
Dspace installation and customization on virtual machines allows testing and configuration without running any risk in terms of losing work done, with the use of snapshots every validated change is safely stored.
Conclusions. Virtualization technology has allowed reducing duration and effort associated to HypatiaSalud installation and customization, providing easy and fast switching back to the last stable HypatiaSalud release, simplifying backup and migration.

Systémy ERM jako důsledek převratných změn v knihovnách
Beitlová, Michaela
F. Management.
HP. e-resources.
LN. Data base management systems.
In the new world of e-resources many revolutionary changes have occured, and these have fundamentally influenced workflows in libraries. The straight line from the subject selector to acquisitions to cataloging and finally to the shelf no longer worked. E-resources demanded licenses, record-keeping of URLs and IP authentication, permissions, and new payment options such as prepayment, and pay per view, along with many other needs. In response to these revolutionary changes, libraries began to develop supplemental systems, which would be able to capture from the ILS systems important data not easily stored or retrievable. Early local developments laid the foundation stone of the complex commercial Electronic Resource Management Systems (ERMS). It was necessary for libraries to come to the conclusion that the information typical to e-resources would best be stored in one place, in order to more efficiently share it with colleagues and to be able to find it again more quickly. The article addresses the reasons for the formation of the ERMS, its present development and future trends.

The measures taken to adapt the ContentDm application to users’ validation requirements are introduced, along with the
collections in the Instituto Cervantes image bank creation project. The project’s general characteristics are then laid out in a presentation. This is followed by a summary of the objectives and strategies inherent within the complex task of implementing
a document manager which is suitable for both internal use to meet the needs of an institution’s personnel and for the
publishing of images on the internet. Finally, there is an account of the suggestions which have been put into practice to further tailor users’ needs to the digital collection manager’s characteristics.

Digital change of news libraries and the lack of a well-defined business model as well as the massive usage of internet search engines demand a reinvention of both the digital media searching pattern and the skills of the news librarian as well. They are key agents to regain audience's confidence and loyalty through the news library's performance. This paper reviews a number of Spanish digital media news
libraries' searching systems.

This doctoral thesis is about the possibility to put archival data (for example archival descriptions, authority records and so on) directly into semantic web, particularly using a technology called “Topic Maps”.
Topic Maps are an ISO standard quite similar to RDF.
To show that it's possible to express archival data directly into semantic web, I translated all archival standards (such ISAD, ISAAR, ISDIAH, ISDF) into Topic Maps Constraint Language schemas. TMCL is a standard of the Topic Maps family. What it's important is that you can declare constraints and inference rules to ensure that a topic map holding archival data is compliant to archival standards.
So, once shown that is possible expressing archival data into semantic web, which is the main advantage?
I think that we can find three advantages in this approach:
you can build flexible and extensible information systems
you can create import and export as linked data
you can merge data of different areas (for example you can merge archival authority records and librarian authority records)
For that aim I also created crosswalks between different standards. For example I mapped FRAD with ISAAR.
For import and export I created some XSL-T stylesheets to convert EAC and EAD to Topic Maps and I released them as opensource on google code.
Lastly I proposed a strong idea to develop flexible information systems (for example a software to manage a digital library or an archival information system such the archival system for national archives). In those systems data wouldn't be stored in a database, but directly in RDF triples or, why not, in a topic map.
This allows to extend or change the system without a database change (so you can add or change a descriptive field without touch the database).

The objective of this article is to describe the development of a database for cinematographic documentation in the departments of television information. An explanation is given about the areas and fields included and how it is interrelated, based on data of audio-visual information of programs referring to information. The purpose is to present an interrelation through related database, as for instance the so different documental types, as the pictures are, and the information created in information programs.

The discussions on the future of cataloging has received increased attention in the last ten years, mainly due to the impact of rapid development of information and communication technologies in the same period, which has provided access to the Web anytime, anywhere. These discussions revolve around the need for a new bibliographic framework to meet the demand of this new reality in the digital environment, ie how libraries can process, store, deliver, share and integrate their collections (physical, digital or scanned), in current post-PC era? Faced with this question, Open Access, Open Source and Open Standards are three concepts that need to receive greater attention in the field of Library and Information Science, as it is believed to be fundamental elements for the change of paradigm of descriptive representation, currently based conceptually on physical item rather than intellectual work. This paper aims to raise and discuss such issues and instigate information professionals, especially librarians, to think, discuss and propose initiatives for such problems, contributing and sharing ideas and possible solutions, in multidisciplinary teams. At the end is suggested the effective creation of multidisciplinary and interinstitutional study groups on the future of cataloging and its impact on national collections, in order to contribute to the area of descriptive representation in national and international level.
