English abstract
This working document argues for the introduction of "Biocultural Heritage" as a distinct category of protection in Spain. It aims to provide a harmonising solution to the legislative fragmentation of Protected Natural Spaces (PNS) while establishing a framework to accommodate stakeholder conservation initiatives without resorting to unilateral radicalism. Contrasting with the North American-derived concept of pristine wilderness, the Spanish landscape has historically co-evolved with human activity in a sustainable manner, forging an indissoluble symbiosis between nature and culture. Rejecting a segregative duality that views natural areas either as untouched environments or as landscapes degraded by human intervention, this study proposes a biocultural approach as a middle path. By conceptualising PNS as complex socio-ecological systems, this perspective offers a unified regulatory framework that balances biodiversity conservation with traditional practices, local identities, and the recreational use of the natural environment.
