English abstract

This review presents and critically examines Ginevra Peruginelli’s volume Multilinguismo e sistemi di accesso all'informazione giuridica (Giuffrè, 2009). The work addresses the core intersection between multilingualism and access to legal information, emphasizing how language and law are intrinsically bound together within modern democratic systems. The review explores the book’s detailed framework, which ranges from linguistic policies and conceptual definitions (distinguishing multilingualism, plurilingualism, and language hegemony) to the technical architectures of information retrieval. Key topics highlighted include Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR), Multilingual Language Information Retrieval (MLIR), Semantic Web applications, legal ontologies (such as the LOIS project), and international standards (such as OAI-PMH, Dublin Core, and RDA). a recensione analizza il volume di Ginevra Peruginelli (Multilinguismo e sistemi di accesso all'informazione giuridica), definendolo un testo fondamentale e innovativo che coniuga la tematica del multilinguismo con l'accesso all'informazione giuridica. L'opera si articola in sei capitoli che abbracciano una vasta gamma di ambiti: Quadri definitori e politiche linguistiche: La distinzione concettuale tra multilinguismo, plurilinguismo e bilinguismo, calata nelle politiche dell'Unione Europea e negli aspetti socio-economici del linguaggio. Sistemi di recupero e Web semantico: L'analisi delle architetture di Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) e Multilingual Information Retrieval (MLIR), l'uso di standard (OAI-PMH, Dublin Core, RDA) e lo sviluppo di ontologie giuridiche (come il progetto LOIS) e thesauri multilingui per il Web semantico. Tecniche e risorse: Le metodologie di disambiguazione semantica, la traduzione automatica, i sistemi di question answering e il ricco repertorio bibliografico e terminologico fornito. Fonti del diritto e democrazia: L'analisi delle tre fonti primarie (legislazione, giurisprudenza, dottrina) e l'importanza dell'accesso aperto (movimento Free Access to Law) come presupposto per la certezza del diritto e la partecipazione democratica dei cittadini. La recensione sottolinea come il testo si rivolga a un pubblico multidisciplinare: bibliotecari (di ambito accademico, giudiziario e digitale), giuristi, giurislinguisti, informatici giuridici e legislatori.
