English abstract

Nowadays we're facing the widest economic and social crisis that hit western countries since the Second World War. Consequently, new and alternative models of development are needed in order to replace the old (and losing) ones, established in the past thirty years. Culture and access to information and knowledge are essential elements for any possible improvement based on equity and sustainability. Libraries may have a crucial role in this transformation if they'll be able to fulfill adequately their new tasks as well as the traditional ones. This paper presents a few suggestions on what could be done in the short to medium term, based on the analysis of the existing literature and on the study of recent experiences.

Nel contesto della più grave crisi economica e sociale che l’Occidente abbia attraversato dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale ad oggi, si diffonde la necessità di fare emergere modelli alternativi a quello affermatosi negli ultimi trent’anni. La cultura e l’accesso all’informazione e alla conoscenza sono elementi fondamentali di un possibile nuovo sviluppo improntato ad equità e sostenibilità, e in questo processo alle biblioteche spetta un ruolo importante, a patto che esse siano in grado di assolvere efficacemente ai loro compiti – sia quelli nuovi che quelli tradizionali. Questo articolo presenta alcune ipotesi praticabili sul breve e medio periodo, prendendo spunto dall'elaborazione della letteratura esistente sull'argomento e dalle esperienze degli ultimi anni, di cui sono state analizzate debolezze e punti di forza.
