English abstract

The article is an analytical report of the IFLA satellite conference “Space and collections earning their keep: transformation, technologies and re-tooling” organized in Paris by the IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development Section and by the Library Buildings and Equipement Section. During the conference, twenty-two speakers from twelve different countries presented the best practices in restoration/reorganization of existing libraries and in designing new library buildings. All the projects showed a common goal: reorganizing the library space according to the transformation of library collections as well as to the users’ needs, and enhancing the social function of the library both as a place of individual and group study, and as a meeting and entertainment space. In order to do this, it seems necessary to give up the notion of a permanent and unchanging space and to embrace the idea of a flexible, pleasant and multifunctional space.

Italian abstract

L’articolo propone un resoconto critico della conferenza satellite IFLA “Space and collections earning their keep: transformation, technologies and re-tooling”, organizzata presso la Bibliothèque Universitaire des Langues et Civilisations (BULAC) di Parigi dall’IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development Section e dall’IFLA Library Buildings and Equipement Section. La conferenza – volta a illustrare le best practices nella ristrutturazione/riorganizzazione di biblioteche esistenti e nella costruzione di nuove strutture – ha ospitato ventidue relatori provenienti da dodici paesi diversi. Tutti i progetti presentati, pur nella varietà di contesti e di tipologie bibliotecarie, mostrano una serie di caratteristiche comuni: il recupero e la trasformazione dello spazio in relazione all’evolversi delle collezioni e delle esigenze degli utenti, e la valorizzazione della funzione sociale della biblioteca come luogo di studio (individuale e di gruppo), di intrattenimento e d'incontro. L'imperativo comune sembra essere quello di rinunciare all’idea di uno spazio fisso a favore di uno spazio che sia flessibile, piacevole e multifunzionale.
