English abstract

Silvano Gerevini was director of the Biblioteca universitaria in Pavia (1955-1973) and a professor of English language and literature at the local university. At Pavia University he devoted himself to the creation and development of the library of the Institute of English language and literature founded in 1959-1960 and directed by him from 1971 to 1982. In the first three decades of their life the institute (from 1983 as part of the Department of foreign languages and literatures) and its library changed their seat twice (in 1978 and in 1989-1990). The classification scheme used by Gerevini to arrange the books was partly transmitted orally. After his death it took some time before the attempt was undertaken, due to practical reasons, to reconstruct and write down the scheme and the call number system in their entirety.

Silvano Gerevini fu direttore della Biblioteca universitaria di Pavia (1955-1973) e docente di lingua e letteratura inglese nellʼateneo della stessa città. NellʼUniversità di Pavia si dedicò «alla formazione ex-novo e al successivo incremento» della biblioteca dellʼIstituto di lingua e letteratura inglese, fondato nel 1959-1960 e da lui diretto negli anni 1971-1982. Nel corso di tre decenni lʼistituto (confluito nel 1983 nel Dipartimento di lingue e letterature straniere moderne) e la sua biblioteca trovarono sistemazione in tre successive sedi (traslochi del 1978 e del 1989-1990). Lo schema per lʼordinamento dei volumi a scaffale adottato da Gerevini fu in parte tramandato oralmente sino a quando necessità di ordine pratico suggerirono il tentativo di ricostruire e fissare per iscritto la sua articolazione interna (suddivisioni delle classi principali) e i criteri utilizzati per lʼattribuzione delle segnature.
