English abstract

This essay intends to illustrate Barbara Tillett’s PhD dissertation Bibliographic relationships: toward a conceptual structure of bibliographic information in cataloging (1987), the first exhaustive theoretical analysis on the bibliographic universe that focuses on bibliographic relationships. The pioneering work carried out by the author between 1981 and 1987 is divided in two parts: an analytical study and an empirical study. In the analytical study the author, through an examination of relevant Anglo-American cataloging codes, creates a taxonomy of bibliographic relationships in which seven categories are identified. For each identified category, Tillett outlines the history of the main linking devices used in catalogs. The empirical study was conducted by Tillett in order to evaluate the extent of bibliographic relationships as reflected through their frequency of occurrence in the machine-readable database (MARC) of the Library of Congress during the period between 1968 and July 1986. Bibliographic relationships played a central role in the development of the conceptual model FRBR, Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, which, in turn, is at the base of ICP, International Cataloging Principles of 2009, and of RDA, Resource Description and Access, that devotes a large part of the text to entities, attributes and specially to bibliographic relationships. The theoretical results of Barbara Tillett’s doctoral dissertation build the fundamental basis for any scientific study on the entities, attributes, and relationships of bibliographic resources.

Il saggio si propone di illustrare la tesi di dottorato di Barbara Tillett Bibliographic relationships: toward a conceptual structure of bibliographic information used in cataloging del 1987, la prima esaustiva analisi teorica dell’universo bibliografico che pone al centro dell’attenzione le relazioni bibliografiche. Il pionieristico lavoro che Tillett portò a compimento tra il 1981 e il 1987 si divide in due parti: uno studio analitico ed uno studio empirico. Nello studio analitico l’autrice, attraverso l’esame di alcuni rilevanti codici catalografici anglo-americani, elabora una tassonomia delle relazioni bibliografiche in cui vengono riconosciute sette categorie. Per ogni categoria definita viene delineata la storia dei principali linking devices utilizzati nei cataloghi. Lo studio empirico fu condotto da Tillett per valutare l’estensione delle relazioni bibliografiche sulla base della loro frequenza di occorrenza nel machine-readable database (MARC) della Library of Congress nel periodo compreso tra inizio 1968 e luglio 1986. Le relazioni bibliografiche hanno assunto un ruolo di primaria importanza nell’elaborazione del modello concettuale FRBR, Functional requirements for bibliographic records, che, a sua volta, è alla base di importanti lavori quali ICP, International cataloging principles del 2009, e di RDA, Resource description and access, che dedica ampia parte del testo proprio alle entità, gli attributi e soprattutto alle relazioni. I risultati teorici raggiunti da Barbara Tillett nella sua tesi di dottorato rappresentano una base concettuale fondamentale per ogni studio sulle entità, gli attributi e le relazioni delle risorse bibliografiche.
