English abstract

This paper explores Distant Reading as a form of reading capable of enriching – rather than replacing – the traditional practice of Close Reading. Drawing on Franco Moretti’s theoretical framework, the article examines how digital text analysis tools, and in particular the open source platform Voyant Tools, do not merely offer techniques for the quantitative exploration of texts, but introduce specific modes of interaction with them. In this perspective, the so-called practices of ‘non-reading’ – grounded in the observation of frequencies, patterns and semantic networks – reflect new forms of reading in which the reader engages with visualisations, graphs and representations of textual data. Therefore, Distant Reading trains to orient within a text before reading it in full, to recognise its structures and the relationships between data, and to critically interrogate the results. What emerges is the profile of an active reader, capable of moving across different levels of textual representation and of integrating quantitative observation with qualitative interpretation. These competencies extend beyond literary analysis and become particularly relevant in the context of contemporary digital reading, characterized by information overload, fragmentation, and non-linearity, opening up important perspectives for critical literacy within library and information science.

Italian abstract

Il presente contributo si propone di esplorare il Distant Reading come forma di lettura capace di arricchire – senza sostituire – la tradizionale lettura ravvicinata (Close Reading). A partire dalla teoria di Franco Moretti, l’articolo analizza come strumenti digitali di analisi testuale, e in particolare la piattaforma open source Voyant Tools, non si limitino a offrire tecniche di esplorazione quantitativa dei testi, ma introducano specifiche modalità di interazione con essi. In questa prospettiva, le cosiddette pratiche di ‘non lettura’ – fondate sull’osservazione di frequenze, pattern e reti semantiche – riflettono nuove forme di lettura in cui il lettore interagisce con visualizzazioni, grafici e rappresentazioni dei dati testuali. Il Distant Reading allena, quindi, ad orientarsi in un testo prima di leggerlo integralmente, a riconoscerne le strutture e le relazioni tra i dati, stimolando ad interrogarsi criticamente sui risultati. Ne emerge il profilo di un lettore attivo, capace di muoversi tra livelli diversi di rappresentazione del testo, che integra osservazione quantitativa e interpretazione qualitativa. Queste competenze sono trasversali rispetto all’analisi letteraria e diventano particolarmente rilevanti nel contesto della lettura digitale contemporanea, caratterizzata da sovrabbondanza informativa, frammentazione e non linearità, aprendo prospettive di alfabetizzazione critica rilevanti per la biblioteconomia e gli studi sull’informazione.
