English abstract

Access to scientific and academic knowledge remains deeply unequal despite the transformative potential of digital technologies. Paywalls, linguistic barriers, institutional hierarchies, and inequalities continue to restrict the democratic circulation of knowledge. This article is first part of a detailed study on contemporary frameworks of Open Access,Open Knowledge and Open Science through a comparative and genealogical engagement with the intellectual legacy of Chattampi Swamikal (1853–1924). Drawing upon the MIT Open Scholarship Framework, UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the study argues that knowledge should be understood not merely as a commodity or technical resource, but as an ethical and social commons. Chattampi Swamikal’s challenge to caste-based monopolies over knowledge, and his commitment to disseminating learning through the vernacular, offer an important historical perspective on epistemic justice and inclusive knowledge systems. The article further highlights the role of libraries and knowledge intermediaries in translating Open Science principles into sustainable, participatory, multilingual, and socially responsible knowledge infrastructures.
