<abstract xmlns="http://eprints.org/ep2/data/2.0">The author considers the evolution of the electronic journal from the first fledgling examples in the 1980s.  The impact of the different forms of journal on both academic and popular culture is considered, and some of the differences and idiosyncrasies between this relatively new medium and its print counterpart are outlined.  The article also looks at both popular and academic influences on the development of digital content, and probable future developments are discussed.</abstract>
