Aimed at introducing a group of useful theoric and practical elements to understand the functioning of search engines in Internet, a review of the literature on this topic was carried out using the well known searchers: Google, Infoseek, MetaCrawler among others..The main features of search engines and its components are presented, with special emphasis in the use of boolean operators and its use in every search engine studied to carry out information search with various degrees of complexity.
