In May 2004 a survey, using a questionnaire instrument, was conducted in order to assess the level of awareness of, and investment in, certain defined areas of Open Access scholarly behaviour within the Computer -, Library -, Information Sciences, and Information Systems scholarly disciplines in South Africa. Preliminary descriptive survey results are presented for a subset of the survey questions asked. Results would indicate that a greater level of exploration of and investment in Open Access is required; and that a debate is needed within South Africa around scholarly communication, not just within libraries, but within academia. These findings were presented at the OA Scholarly Communication Conference, hosted by the South African Site Licensing Initiative (SASLI) and the Open Society Institute (OSI).
