<abstract xmlns="http://eprints.org/ep2/data/2.0">The research performance of 64 Mexicans who obtained their Ph.D. in American universities from 1980 to 1998 was examined in order to determine the extent of brain drain. A variety of sources were used for this purpose: Dissertation Abstracts, MathSciNet, Science Citation Index Expanded and the Mexican National Researchers System database. The results showed that mathematicians working abroad performed better than their colleagues in Mexico.</abstract>
