The process of control is a necessary component of management in order to maximise library resources and services. Based on the premise both that the public library must tailor its services to the needs of the users and be accountable to the community at large, the librarian must implement adequate control measures to collect data and assess results with a view to informing decision making and demonstrating the efficiency of the library. This task is important for the survival of both the institution and the profession in times of financial restriction and accountability of public services.
