Research on the contents and management of the town council websites from Girona province (Spain). Catalan town council are becoming visible on the Internet offering their basic and characteristic services. The research is focused on two main aspects. First, we have created an evaluation table for town council websites. This table, which is valuable for further researches, is based on the possibilities of management of the web and its interest for users. On the other hand, it presents the state of the art in the province of Girona on January 1st 2001. The survey points out serious deficiencies, such as the lack of interaction with citizens, the lack of an adequate system of web pages retrieval and diffusion, and the practically non-existent use of standard auto-descriptive languages (metadata). Finally, the paper concludes with a range of improving measures likely to be taken into account by the people in charge of the “electronic town councils”.
