English abstract

Along with entertainment, Internet caters to the information needs of users. It only requires some amount of searching skills on the part of users to get better results. Public libraries in western countries offer free online reference services like “Ask a librarian”. Library of congress has a wide network of librarians to cater to this kind of service. Indian libraries are reluctant and avoid providing online answering service. By starting a similar online reference service, we can avoid purchase of costly printed reference sources. Free online sources like Encyclopedia Britannica, Wikipedia and other similar sources can be used to provide ask a librarian service in regional languages also.

ಇಂಟರ್ನೆಟ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮನರಂಜನೆಯ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸೇವೆಗಳು ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ನೈಪ್ಯಣ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ವಿದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಆನ್ ಲೈನ್ ಪರಾಮರ್ಶನ ಸೇವೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಲೇಖನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. Ask a librarian ನಂತಹ ಸೇವೆಗಳು ಪಶ್ಚಿಮದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಲೈಬ್ರರಿ ಆಫ಼್ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಕೂಡ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಗ್ರಂಥಪಾಲಕರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಜಾಲವೊಂದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರತವಾಗಿದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳು ಇಂತಹ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಗಾಭರಿ ಮಿಶ್ರಿತ ತೇಲಿಸುವ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನೇ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಇಂತಹ ಪುಕ್ಕಟೆ ಆನ್ಲೈನ್ ಪರಾಮರ್ಶನ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳಿಂದ ಸೇವೆ ದೊರಕಿಸಿ ಅವುಗಳ ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಪ್ರತಿ ಖರೀದಿಗೆ ತಗುಲುವ ದುಬಾರಿ ವೆಚ್ಚ ಉಳಿಸಬಹುದು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜನರನ್ನು ತಲುಪಬಹುದು. ಪುಕ್ಕಟೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಬ್ರಿಟಾನಿಕಾ ವಿಶ್ವಕೋಶ, ನಿಘಂಟು, ಪದಕೋಶ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಆನ್ಲೈನ್ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಬಹುದು. ಇಂಟರ್ನೆಟ್ ಅಷ್ಟೇನೂ ದುಬಾರಿಯೆಂದೆನಿಸದ ಇಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾ ಬಳಸಿ “ಗ್ರಂಥಪಾಲಕರೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ” ಸೇವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಬಹುದು. ಈ ವಿಚಾರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ನೈಪ್ಯಣ್ಯತೆಯ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ ನಾವು ಪರಾವಲಂಬಿಗಳಾಗಿರುವುದು ವಿಷಾದನೀಯ.
