English abstract

Theses submitted for obtaining academic degrees are important sources of primary research information but are not usually published and frequently difficult to find. The INIDEP (National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development) Library, has always had within its mission, the collection, preservation and access of the National Marine Scientific Literature, including the Argentine Marine Thesis, even though it is not a university-academic type institution, but a government research one. There are no other institutions in the country registering within web databases or repositories, their marine and aquatic thesis archives. The INIDEP Library has an important Marine Thesis Archive available for the world scientific community through referential Databases SIDALC-IICA, and also included in ASFA-Proquest. It became involved from the beginning with OceanDoc-IOC Repository since 2005 and created a Marine Thesis Collection- Tesis en Ciencias Marinas- within the Argentine Community, at the moment 60 records (http://iodeweb1.vliz.be/odin/handle/1834/1339). The impact within the young Argentine scientific community of web alert notices on this matter was high, many new Phd’s requested the INIDEP Library to have their new born-digital thesis to be incoporated to the repository. The visibility is shown with usage statistics from different countries and a subject analysis is also included. The systems interoperability allow many access points, -the Referential Databases such as ASFA-Proquest and SIDALC are linked to Oceandocs fulltext records, and –the scientists can include the link to bibliographies and academic CV’s. At the national level, the INIDEP Library is leading the initiative inviting and contacting to train other universities, and research institutions in order to start uploading their thesis archives in the Collection.

Las tesis presentadas para la obtención de títulos académicos son importantes fuentes de información de investigación primaria, pero generalmente no se publican y con frecuencia, difíciles de encontrar. La biblioteca del INIDEP (Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero), ha tenido dentro de su misión, el acopio, preservación y acceso de la literatura nacional sobre las ciencias del mar, incluyendo las tesis de dichas ciencias en Argentina, aunque no es una institución de tipo académico, sino un instituto de investigación del gobierno. No hay otras instituciones en el país que registren en bases de datos electrónicas o depósitos, sus archivos de tesis marinas y acuáticas. La Biblioteca INIDEP cuenta con un importante archivo sobre ciencias del mar, disponible para la comunidad científica mundial a través de bases de datos referenciales SIDALC-IICA, y también en ASFA-Proquest. Desde un comienzo se involucró con el repositorio OceanDoc COI-UAB. Desde 2005 ha creado una colección de tesis en la materia dentro de la comunidad argentina. Al momento hay 60 registros en (http://iodeweb1.vliz.be/odin/handle/ 1834/1339). El impacto de los boletines de alerta en la werb en la comunidad de jóvenes científicos argentinos fue alta,al pu nto que muchos solicitaron a la Biblioteca INIDEP que sus recientes tesis digitales deberían incorporarse al repositorio. La visibilidad es mostrada a través de estadísticas de uso de diferentes países, e incluye un análisis de temas. La interoperabilidad de los sistemas permiten muchos puntos de acceso,-las bases de datos referenciales, como ASFA-Proquest y SIDALC están vinculados a los registros de Texto OceanDocs, y los científicos pueden incluir el enlace a las bibliografías y currículum académico. En el plano nacional, la Biblioteca del INIDEP está liderando la iniciativa de invitación y en contacto para formar a otras universidades e instituciones de investigación con el fin de empezar a subir sus archivos de tesis en la Colección.
