English abstract
Currently the implementation of OAI-PMH is spreading to areas that were not originally developed. Initially data providers contained textual documents, generally from scientific literature. The first applications became in reaction of the Revolution of the Scientifics, which promoted free access to information. Today the landscape is undergoing by dramatic change. It is using this protocol to manage other materials, such as the heritage –historical press- or special media such as audio files, image and animated. However, we know few cases of DP targeted exclusively to this type of media. Identifying this kind of projects is interesting for using the best practices and the experience gained by other professionals to start our own projects. The purpose of this study is to identify success stories in the media handling outside the texts of scientific world to reach out and apply best practice to our projects. Three years ago we led an initiative to provide information on image data with a partial funding from the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The project PHOTOGRAPHY ON SPAIN IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY adapts the photographic collection of the University of Navarra –Fondo Fotográfico Fundación Universidad de Navarra- to the requirements of the OAI-PMH http://coleccionfff.unav.es/bvunav Currently our goal is twofold: to expand the contents of this OAI compliant collection, and to gather and participate with similar initiatives. Materials and methods We began the study of all registered DP 2010 ROAR official records, http://roar.eprints.org and openarchives.org. We have introduced all the information in an Excel spreadsheet and have examined one by one to classify them according to media cited: real image -heritage or commercial photographies...-, motion pictures -video, animation, movies creation...-, audio material -music, voice, podcast...-, iconic objects -paintings, sculptures, ethnographic objects, drawings...-. From these, we selected the most significant projects according to subjective criteria: number of documents, prestige of the institution that develop the project, specificity of the material… Conclusions We were interested to know how they were describing and managing materials different than the traditional text. The study of these aspects offers these preliminary conclusions: the projects that address special materials often use specific software; and the description by simplified Dublin Core is not enough to handle this kind of materials. And as a general conclusion, it suggests that there are few projects devoted exclusively to non-textual materials

Actualmente la aplicación del protocolo OAI-PMH está extendiéndose hacia ámbitos que no le eran propios en origen. En un principio los proveedores de datos solían contener documentos textuales, generalmente de carácter científico. Esto surgió como respuesta a la llamada revolucion de los científicos, que promovia el libre acceso a la información. Hoy día el panorama está experimentando un cambio dramático. Se está utilizando este protocolo para otro tipo de material, como puede ser el patrimonial –prensa histórica- o soportes especiales como los documentos sonoros, la imagen fija y la animada. Sin embargo, conocemos pocos casos de DP orientados en exclusiva a este tipo de soportes. El interés en identificarlos reside en la posiblidad de utilizar el conocimiento adquirido por otros profesionales para comenzar nuestros propios proyectos. Hace tres años lideramos una iniciativa para suministrar información sobre imagen fija gracias a la financiación parcial del Ministerio de Cultura. El proyecto FOTOGRAFÍA SOBRE ESPAÑA EN EL SIGLO XIX adaptó la colección Fondo Fotográfico de la Universidad de Navarra a los requerimientos del OAI-PMH http://coleccionfff.unav.es/bvunav Actualmente nuestro objetivo es doble: por una parte ampliar la colección que contiene, y por otra aglutinar y participar de iniciativas similares a la nuestra. El objetivo del presente trabajo es identificar las historias de éxito en el manejo de soportes ajenos a lo que es habitual en el mundo científico -el texto- para tomar contacto y aplicar sus buenas prácticas a nuestros proyectos. Material y método: Por esta razón, comenzamos el estudio de todos los DP inscritos en 2010 en los registros oficiales ROAR, http://roar.eprints.org. Se introdujo toda la información en una hoja Excel y se examinaron uno a uno para clasificarlos según trataran con los soportes que son de nuestro interés: imagen fija real –fotografía patrimonial, fotografía comercial…-, imagen en movimiento –video, animaciones, películas de creación…- , material sonoro –música, voz, podcast…-, objetos iconográficos –cuadros, esculturas, objetos etnográficos, dibujos…- . De ellos, se seleccionaron los proyectos más significativos según unos criterios subjetivos: cantidad de documentos, prestigio de la institución que lo desarrolla, especificidad del material. Conclusiones: Nuestro interés era conocer cómo se estaban describiendo y tratando materiales que no fueran el texto tradicional. Del estudio de estos aspectos resultan las siguientes conclusiones: -Los proyectos que gestionan esos materiales usan softwares específicos; -La descripción mediante DublinCore simplificado no es suficiente para tratar este tipo de materiales; -Se apunta que existen pocos proyectos dedicados en exclusiva a materiales que no sean textuales.
