English abstract
This article is intended for librarians and general community and it shows the real world of many public libraries in small towns in Colombia. Those libraries do not have government’s support and have to face many politic, economic and cultural problems and therefore the service provided might be considered poor and occasionally nonexistent. Nevertheless, the national government has made remarkable effort to improve the public library system of Colombia and has focused on guaranteeing all small towns have at least one public library. It also presents a general analysis of the causes of the existence of poor Public Libraries, and some problems related to the government and librarian’s responsibilities are posed.
Spanish abstract
Este artículo escrito para bibliotecólogos y para lacomunidad en general. Muestra parte de la realidadde muchas de las bibliotecas públicas municipalesen Colombia. Bibliotecas que no cuentan con apoyode las administraciones municipales, ni distritales yque enfrentan dificultades de orden político, económicoy cultural que hacen que los servicios prestadossean deficientes y en ocasiones nulos. Sin embargo,se reconocen los esfuerzos realizados a nivelnacional, departamental y municipal para fortalecerel sistema de bibliotecas públicas de Colombia y suespecial interés en garantizar que todo municipiode Colombia cuente por lo menos con una bibliotecapública. Igualmente, se hace un análisis generalde las posibles causas que hacen que las BibliotecasPúblicas se encuentren en un estado deficiente y seplantean algunos problemas relacionados con la responsabilidaddel Estado y de los bibliotecólogos.
