English abstract

This article discusses royalty issues for building digital library in the wake of enthusiastic efforts of the Carnegie Melon University to digitize one lakh Kannada books. It throws light on various methods employed in deciding the royalty for e-books and the pros and cons of these methods. It also points out the type and quality of collection to be digitized by the Public Library Department of Government of Karnataka to make the digitization of Kannada books effective. The necessity of a consolidated list and/or collection of all published Kannada books is emphasized in order to optimally build a digital library of Kannada books.

ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಲೈಬ್ರರಿ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ರಾಯಧನ ನಿಗದಿಪಡಿಸುವ ವಿಧಾನಗಳ ಸಾಧಕಬಾಧಕಗಳನ್ನು ಚರ್ಚಿಸುವ ಲೇಖನ ಆ ವಿಧಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಲೋಪಗಳನ್ನು ಆಧಾರ ಸಮೇತ ತೋರಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅದನ್ನು ದುರುಪಯೋಗಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಡಿಜಿಟೈಸ್ ಮಾಡುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಲಭ್ಯತೆ, ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಮಾನದಂಡ, ಸಂಗ್ರಹದ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಳಕು ಚೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಯೋಜನೆಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಕಟಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿಯ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಗೆ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಡಿಜಿಟೈಸ್ ಮಾಡಲು ತಗುಲುವ ದುಬಾರಿ ವೆಚ್ಚವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡುವೆಡೆಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಒಂದು ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣ ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅನುಸರಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಕ್ರಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಹೇಳುವ ಲೇಖನ ಕೇವಲ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದೆಡೆಗಿನ ಸೆಳೆತದಿಂದ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಹಣ ಪೋಲು ಮಾಡದೆ, ಕಡಿಮೆ ಖರ್ಚಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ತಲುಪಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಆಶಯವನ್ನು ವಕ್ತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
