English abstract

The ever-growing amount of documents (electronic or other)has increased the value of abstracts, and abstracting systemsand services, as instruments for concentrating and supplying relevant information. Ongoing research in different disci-plines, with abstracting as the common subject matter, pointsto the usefulness of the paradigm concept. This perspectivewould provide the coherence necessary not only for theprocesses of abstracting but also for the products and ser-vices derived. We identify and describe four paradigms (com-municational, physical, cognitive and systemic), comprisingthe most significant lines of investigation in this area, inorder to offer a ‘state of the art’ analysis that may prove help-ful for future research studies.
