English abstract

In this paper, findings of a survey on information seeking behaviors of academics in the history departments of universities in Ankara are presented. Books and periodicals are the most important printed sources for academic historians. Chasing footnotes in the bibliographies of articles and books, and searching library catalogs are the two major search techniques used by historians. They prefer to use their own collections and notes in seeking information. Borrowing books and scanning periodicals are the most important reasons for library use. The Turkish Historical Society Library, The National Library of Turkey, The Ottoman Archives and The Republican Archives are the most heavily used information centers. Historians prefer the original form of archival materials; such characteristics as the originality, accessibility, and accuracy of archival materials matter to them. Historians use both formal and informal information channels to get access to information. Information centers, information sources, information channels and information technologies affect the information seeking and information use of historians.
