English abstract

A comprehensive catalogue of over a lakh Kannada books, published so far and current catalogue of about 1500 titles published every year have been elusive dream for researchers and common readers. Among the efforts put so far the comprehensive catalogue of over 40,000 books published in 70s by University of Mysore under the leadership of Prof. K. S. Deshpande is the only effort towards developing a comprehensive catalogue. Efforts like that of "Grantha Sampada" of Karnataka Ganaka Parishath and that of INFLINBET are too inadequate and not user-friendly. Without a comprehensive catalogue of Kannada Books, talking about e-books, digital libraries, etc. are meaningless. Users neither seek after scanned copyright-free books nor they are true e-books. State public libraries, Kannada Book Authority and Kannada Book industry have failed to make efforts to at least add details of Kannada books to ‘World Cat’ of OCLC and ISBN database. Surprisingly, it is libraries abroad like LC and British Library (UK) provide bibliographical details of over 15000 Kannada books on Internet. Kannada readers and scholars have been left high and dry without a comprehensive catalogue and a comprehensive reference library of all published Kannada books.

ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪೂರ್ವಾನ್ವಿತ ಸೂಚಿಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ, ಪ್ರತೀ ವರ್ಷ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಅವಲೋಕನವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಆಸಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈವರೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಯಾವುದೇ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿಯ ಕೊರತೆ ಎದ್ದು ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಪ್ರೊ. ಕೆ ಎಸ್ ದೇಶಪಾಂಡೆಯವರ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ವಿ ವಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿ ಒಂದು ದಿಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ, ಆದರೆ ಈ ಯೋಜನೆ ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ದಿಶೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಇತರ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳ ಸಾಧ್ಯಾಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಲೇಖನ ಅವಲೋಕಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದ ಲೈಬ್ರರಿ ಆಫ಼್ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್, ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ನ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳು ಕಲೆಹಾಕಿ ದೊರಕಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯ ಪ್ರಮಾಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟುತನಗಳೆರಡೂ ಅನುಕರಣೀಯ. ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಂದೆರೆಡು ವೆಬ್ ತಾಣಗಳಾದ ಗ್ರಂಥಸಂಪದ ಹಾಗು INFLIBNET ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಎದುರಾಗುವ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ, ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಕೆದಾರರ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನದಿಂದ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗ್ರಂಥಸಂಗ್ರಹಣೆಗಳ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬುವ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿಯಿಂದಾಚೆಗೆ ಇ-ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು, ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯಗಳು, ಬ್ರೈಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಚರ್ಚೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿಯನ್ನೇ ಕ್ರೋಢೀಕರಿಸಲಾಗದೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಪಠ್ಯವನ್ನು ದೊರಕಿಸುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಮಗ್ರ ಗ್ರಂಥಸೂಚಿ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಾಧಾರವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಹಾಗೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಸ್ಕ್ಯಾನ್ ಮಾಡಿ ವಿದ್ಯುನ್ಮಾನ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಕ್ಕೆ ಅಳವಡಿಸುವುದು ಜೀವಂತ ಇ-ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಲ್ಲ, ಹಾಗೂ ಇಂತಹ ಕಳಪೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಗಣಕೀಕರಣ ನಿರರ್ಥಕ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳೆನಿಸುತ್ತವೆ.
