English abstract

This document includes through 14 pages the main comments made by the author to the ongoing thesis of the Environmental Engineering Master Degree program at the Ciudad Juarez Autonomous University (UACJ) being conducted by Ms. Esmeralda Cervantes Rendon, undergraduate in Chemical Engineering for the Creation of a Virtual [sic] Environmental Library of the Mexican state of Chihuahua at the College of Chihuahua Research Centre in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico which belongs to the nationwide scientific research centres of the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). The main comments have to do with the importance that controlled languages such as Thesauri have for the creation of library electronic services to be delivered through the Internet for scientific special libraries such as this at the Chihuahua College. The most remarkable comment is that the erroneous notions of "virtual" and "virtuality" are challenged and considered as tautologies when combined with "library" when they are related for the creation of library services to be delivered through Information and Communication Technologies; all human thinking / thought and its surrogates are already virtual, i.e. they are symbolic representations of the reality outside abstractions, for "virtual library" is a tautological idea, for a "library" and "virtual" are both already virtual notions mutually excluding. These comments were made through email exchange between the author and the master student Ms. Cervantes Rendón; here only two are shown: one from Tuesday 20 February 2007 and Thursday 1st March 2007. The document also includes references to underpin the comments for certain theoretical validity checks.

Este documento incluye en 14 paginas los principales comentarios a la tesis en curso de la maestría en ingeniería ambiental de la UACJ para la Creación de la Biblioteca Virtual Ambiental de Chihuahua en el Colegio de Chihuahua, en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México que elabora la Ing. Quím. Esmeralda Cervantes Rendón. Los principales comentarios versan sobre la importancia que tienen los lenguajes controlados como los Tesauros para la elaboracion de servicios bibliotecarios electronicos a traves de Internet para bibliotecas cientificas especializadas como la del Colegio de Chihuahua. El comentario mas destacable es que se desafia la concepcion erronea de "virtual" o "virtualidad" cuando se habla de crear servicios bibliograficos a traves de tecnologias de informacion y comunicacion; todo el pensamiento humano y sus derivados son virtuales, e.g. representaciones simbolicas de la realidad fuera de la abstraccion, por lo que "biblioteca virtual" es ya una tautologia, porque ambas por separado son nociones ya virtuales y por lo tanto mutuamente excluyentes. Estos comentarios fueron elaborados a traves de un intercambio de corre electronico entre el autor de este documento y la estudiante de maestria, Ing. Quim. Esmeralda Cervantes Rendón; aqui solo se destacan dos que le envio el autor a la tesista: martes 20 de febrero de 2007 y jueves 1º de marzo de 2007. El documento tambien incluye referencias bibliograficas que sustentan los comentarios para su validacion teoretica.
