English abstract

Abstract: Writing and Publishing books in Pakistan is a complex undertaking; and to a large extent devoid of monetary gain. An average 1200 books were published annually during five year period from 2001 to 2005. Most books were published on Islam, Pakistan, Literature, and History. The Social Sciences, Humanities, Science and Technology are more or less been neglected by the Pakistani Authors Strong areas in Authorship: a) Books on Islam were the most favorite category of Pakistani authors (28.3%). b) 23.9% books were published in the Literature Category was the second most favored category. c) The third major category of books was on topics related to Pakistan 19.9%. d) The fourth major category of authorship was History, including biographies and Travelogues 10.7%. Weak Areas in Authorship: a) Science, Health Sciences, Engineering & Technology all combined generated only 288 books out of 6113 i.e. 4.7% of the total books published during the period. The more serious matter was that the books published in this category are mostly elementary, secondary or undergraduate level books, and not research level books. b) Social Sciences. Only 73 books; 1.2 % were published in this category, a lack of authors’ interest in social sciences such as Economics, Sociology, commerce, Law and Education was visible. c) There was a serious shortage of authorship in Humanities such as Philosophy, Psychology, Logic & Ethics. 19 books 0.3%.
