English abstract

The profession of the librarian – information specialist constantly changes, following the developments in the technological sector and the social changes. The competencies of the librarian should be parallel with the aforementioned continuous developments in order to meet the increasing user demands to cover their informational needs. International library organizations, such as IFLA, ALA and SLA, work on updating the competencies of the librarian. The efforts for individual and professional development lead to the enhancement of the user services provided and consequently to the improvement of the image of both the librarian and the library.

Το επάγγελμα του βιβλιοθηκονόμου-επιστήμονα πληροφόρησης αλλάζει, καθώς ακολουθεί τις εξελίξεις στον τεχνολογικό τομέα και στην κοινωνική διάρθρωση. Οι δεξιότητες του βιβλιοθηκονόμου πρέπει να βαδίζουν παράλληλα με τις εξελίξεις αυτές σε μια δυναμική συνεχούς βελτίωσης, ώστε να ανταποκρίνονται στις ολοένα αυξανόμενες απαιτήσεις των χρηστών για κάλυψη των πληροφοριακών αναγκών τους. Διεθνείς βιβλιοθηκονομικοί οργανισμοί, όπως η IFLA, η ALA και η SLA, ασχολούνται και ανανεώνουν τις δεξιότητες που έχουν θεσπίσει. Εκτός από τις επαγγελματικές, οι προσωπικές δεξιότητες είναι εξ ίσου σπουδαίες για τον βιβλιοθηκονόμο. Η προσπάθεια για ατομική και επαγγελματική βελτίωση οδηγεί σε βελτίωση των παρεχομένων υπηρεσιών προς τους χρήστες και κατά συνέπεια σε καλυτέρευση της εικόνας του βιβλιοθηκονόμου και της βιβλιοθήκης.
