English abstract
Scientific Journal Publishing in India (SJPI) was a project carried out at the National Center for Science Information (NCSI) of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. It was sponsored by the Asian Media and Information Centre, Singapore and was carried out in partnership with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), Canada. Conducted from October 2004 to March 2007, SJPI’s objective was to demonstrate electronic publishing of journals through a prototype and disseminate the knowledge gained among the journal publishing community. We also developed a Hindi language interface for the Open Journals System (OJS), an open source e-journals publishing software. This article while briefly outlining the outcomes of the project, analyses the situation in India and lessons learned in the process. It specifically focuses on the problems faced by developing countries like India and suggests methods to overcome them.
