English abstract
[English asbtract] A short write up giving a birds eye view of the history of the first library of the world - Alexandria Library, established by Ptolemy in BC 283. It covers the methods for classification of knowledge employed by the library, information on the scholars who headed the institution in different times, the facilities it offered for the research scholars and the public, its contribution to knowledge which can equate it with any great universities of the present day world and the causes for its destruction. The article mentions the present attempts to rebuild the Alexandria library.

[Malayam abstract] ലോകചരിത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഗ്രന്ഥാലയമായ അലക്സാണ്ട്റിയ ലൈബ്രറിയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കു്‌ കണ്ണോടിക്കുന്ന തീര്‍ത്തും ഹൃസ്വമായ ഒരു ലേഖനം. ബി. സി 283 ല്‍ ടോളമി സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഗ്രന്ഥാലയത്തിലെ വിജ്ഞാന വിഭജന രീതികള്‍, പ്രധാന ഗ്രന്ഥാലയാധിപന്‍മാര്‍, വായനക്കാര്‍ക്കും ഗവേഷകര്‍ക്കും നല്‍കിയിരുന്ന സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍, വിവിധ ശാസ്‌തശാഖകള്‍ക്കു്‌ ആ ഗ്രന്ഥാലയം നല്‍കിയ വിലപ്പെട്ട സംഭാവനകള്‍ ഒക്കെ ഓര്‍മ്മപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതോടൊപ്പം അതിന്റെ പുനര്‍നിമ്മാണ ശ്രമങ്ങളെയും ലേഖകന്‍ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
