English abstract

Controlled vocabularies allow for the synthesis and consolidation of synonyms into unique subject headings. These characteristics make them suitable for the retrieval of any type of information. Nevertheless, the complexity of some precoordinated vocabularies limits its use and renders information systematization less agile. That is the case of the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Its hierarchical structure is difficult to understand, both by users and librarians. OCLC has developed a subject headings database, called FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), extracted from the LCSH, which categorizes the subject headings according several facets, maintaining the richness of the LCSH while using a less complicated syntax. If FAST consolidates it will become a useful tool for the subject analysis of all types of information resources.

Spanish abstract

Los vocabularios controlados tienen una gran capacidad de síntesis y de reunión de términos sinónimos en epígrafes unívocos, lo que los hace idóneos para la recuperación de todo tipo de información. Sin embargo, la complejidad de algunos vocabularios precoordinados limita su utilización y les resta agilidad a los procesos de sistematización de la información. Tal es el caso de los Library of Congress Subject Headings, cuya estructura jeráraquica es de difícil comprensión, tanto para los usuarios como para los bibliotecarios. OCLC ha desarrollado una base de datos de epígrafes, denominada FAST (Faceted application of subject terminology), extraída de los LCSH, que categoriza los encabezamientos según diversas facetas, manteniendo la riqueza de los LCSH, a la vez que utiliza una sintaxis más sencilla. Si se consolida, FAST se convertirá en una herramienta útil para analizar todo tipo de recurso informativo.
