English abstract

Introduction: The public library of the twenty-first century must play a central role in integrating the immigrant population, especially in an area of strong immigration such as the Community of Valencia. Objectives: To analyze and evaluate the impact of library projects in the multicultural community in the period 2004-2008. Materials and Methods: We analyze investments, collections and services compared with other public libraries Valencia, other experiences of Spain (Andalucia) and some international standards. Results: Except in Gandia, the achievements are late and incomplete. Conclusions: Despite this, these libraries concentrate the bulk of the funds and useful services to the immigrant population in the Valencian Public Reading Network.

Spanish abstract

Introducción: La biblioteca pública del siglo XXI debe jugar un papel primordial en la integración de la población inmigrante especialmente en una zona de fuerte inmigración como es la Comunidad Valenciana. Objetivos: Analizar y evaluar el impacto de los proyectos de bibliotecas multiculturales en la Comunidad Valenciana en el periodo 2004-2008. Materiales y Metodología: Se analizan inversiones, colecciones y servicios comparándolos con otras bibliotecas públicas valencianas, otras experiencias españolas (Andalucía) y algunos estándares internacionales. Resultados: Salvo en Gandia, los logros son tardíos y parciales. Conclusiones: Pese a ello, estas bibliotecas concentran el grueso de los fondos y servicios útiles para la población inmigrante en la Red de Lectura Pública Valenciana.
