English abstract

Catalog has changed many shapes before becoming an electronic one. When Panizzi was a librarian, there was a hierarchical order into the catalog. In the transition from the book-catalog to the file-card catalog each book had to be described on a new card. The passage was from a panoramic to a fragmentary structure of the organization of information. The new forms of catalog turned on the debate on the retrieval rather than on the grouping function of the catalog. Can the catalog be reconsidered in terms referring to the panoramic function of the book-catalog, in a new version by technology? The attention is pointed to one data or one descriptive element rather than to the catalog itself nor to the cataloguing by access or description. The catalog is now dynamic on the basis of the needs of single people using it; the data making the catalog can be recovered in the universe of information. Interest, doubts, fascination, and scepticism are all mixed together.

Nel corso del tempo, il catalogo ha assunto numerose forme prima di divenire elettronico. Ai tempi di Panizzi le schede catalografiche erano presentate in ordine gerarchico. Nel passaggio dal catalogo a volume al catalogo a schede mobili ogni libro doveva essere descritto in modo distinto e completo su una scheda autonoma. Si passò da una struttura panoramica a una struttura frammentaria dell’organizzazione delle informazioni. La predisposizione di nuove forme di catalogo ha riacceso il conflitto tra la funzione di reperimento e la funzione di raggruppamento. È possibile ripensare al catalogo in termini nuovi, che facciano riferimento alla struttura panoramica del catalogo a volume, in una versione aggiornata e potenziata dalle conoscenze acquisite e dalla tecnologia? L’attenzione non è più rivolta al catalogo come tale e nemmeno alla registrazione catalografica distinta tra accesso e descrizione (come in RDA), bensì ai singoli dati o ai soli elementi descrittivi, a prescindere dalla registrazione. Il catalogo è annunciato sempre più modulare, costruito dinamicamente in base alle esigenze dei singoli attori che lo utilizzano, e i dati che lo compongono possono essere ripresi nell’universo delle informazioni. Interesse e dubbi, fascino e scetticismo si mescolano.
