English abstract

The notion of “concept” is a central issue in Information and Library Science: we talk about the concepts expressed in an information need, about the concepts obtained from the content analysis of a document… But, do we really know what we refer to when we use the term "concepts"? This paper explores the notion of “concept” from philosophy of language and from cognitive psychology viewpoints: the two most prevalent theories in the study of categorial representation are examined (classic theory and prototype theory), presenting their difficulties. Finally, the integrative model of conceptual structures of Margolis and Laurence is pleaded for.

La noción de “concepto” es central en el campo de la Información y Documentación: hablamos de los conceptos presentes en una necesidad de información, de los conceptos obtenidos a partir del análisis del contenido de un documento,… Pero, ¿sabemos realmente a qué nos referimos cuando utilizamos el término “conceptos”? Este artículo está dedicado a examinar la noción de “concepto” desde la filosofía del lenguaje y la psicología cognitiva: se repasan dos de las teorías que más impacto han tenido sobre el estudio de la representación categorial (teoría clásica y teoría del prototipo), examinando sus principales dificultades. Finalmente, se aboga por el modelo integrador de estructuras conceptuales de Margolis y Laurence.
