English abstract

Despite the intense research and commercial activities that take place around the idea of digital library, there is no clear consensus about what exactly a digital library is and what is its actual connection with the traditional library and with the Librarianship. The diversity of actors involved in the short history of digital libraries, the diversity of types of digital repositories and ervices, as well as the complex of technology required to make them fully functioning seems to be the most obvious reason to those conceptual difficulties.. This paper discusses briefly the concept of digital library, the way it is viewed by different social groups and how it is has been appropriated by the traditional libraries.

Não obstante a intensa atividade de pesquisa e de exploração comercial que se desenrola em torno da idéia de biblioteca digital, não se tem um consenso claro do que seja exatamente uma biblioteca digital e de quais são as suas reais vinculações com a biblioteca tradicional e com a Biblioteconomia. A diversidade de atores envolvidos na curta história das bibliotecas digitais, a diversidade de tipos repositórios digitais e serviços, bem como o complexo de tecnologias necessárias ao seu pleno funcionamento parece ser o motivo mais óbvio para idéia pouco precisa do que seja uma biblioteca digital. Neste trabalho discute-se brevemente o conceito de biblioteca digital, a maneira como ela é vista por diversos grupos sociais e como ela tem sido apropriado pelas bibliotecas tradicionais
