English abstract

"The book: from papyrus to bytes" deals with the definition of book (in paper or electronic), starting from the concepts stablished in 1965 by the french sociologist Rober Escarpit. The next section "The book until yesterday" describes the "old" definition of the (paper) book, from cost and benefits to printing presses and a brief history from Gutenberg to the Americas. Wondering about a "electronic book", we ask ourselves: what is an electronic book? To respond with some consequences of these change. The paper continues with metaphores about the electronic [digital] revolution: coexistence with the traditional paper form; traditional and customized liaison with the printed information and the mandatory mediation. We conclude that the old fashioned relation between book and reader remains unchanged: free and freedom to choose; knowledge search and hoarding.

Spanish abstract

Examina los cambios sufridos por el libro y su función fundamental, que es la de difundir las obras del intelecto humano, partiendo de los conceptos de Robert Escarpit. El apartado "El libro hasta ayer" analiza la definición del libro "de papel", costos y beneficios con el origen de la imprenta modificada por Gutenberg y una breve historia de su difusión y dispersión por las Américas. Reflexionando sobre el libro "electrónico" (digital) encontramos algunas consecuencias de estos cambios. Estudiamos las metáforas de la revolución [digital] electrónica: 1) la coexistencia con la forma tradicional en papel; el apego a la forma arraigada de contacto táctil con la información y la generación de impresos; la intermediación obligada. Luego del paso obligado por Borges (J.L.), concluimos resaltando la relación entre el lector y el libro: gratuidad, búsqueda de conocimiento y atesoramiento.
