English abstract

In the Information Society, based in the digital access to information released from physical carriers, the new information professional´s role must orientate to active information management and requires to leave behind the traditional librarian´s stereotype as a passive knowlegde custodian. A survey was made and the results suggest the librarians thinks that their images is perceived as irelevant by society, while they perceived their own image as trascendent as mediators between information source, print and electronic, and the users. In order to achieve the change of this negative image, is necessary to emphasize the educational information professional´s role in the use of the new information technologies

Spanish abstract

En la nueva sociedad del conocimiento basada en el acceso a la información digital independizada de sus soportes físicos, el nuevo rol del profesional de la información debe orientarse a la gestión activa de toda esta información y requiere dejar atrás el estereotipo tradicional del bibliotecario, como mero custodio pasivo del saber. Se realizó un estudio del que surge como resultado que los bibliotecarios consideran que su imagen frente a la sociedad es percibida como poco relevante, a la vez, que los profesionales perciben su imagen como trascendente, como mediadores entre las fuentes de información, impresas y electrónicas y los usuarios. Para lograr el cambio de esta imagen negativa tradicional, se requiere enfatizar el rol educativo del profesional de la información en el uso de las nuevas tecnologías de información
