English abstract

This article describes the main perspectives in the study of information behavior: a user perspective and system perspective. In the user's perspective, we assume a global vision of information-seeking process and develop theoretical and methodological models to guide research in this field. Two theoretical proposals are Sense-Making theory of Brenda Dervin and the Information Search Process model of Carol Kuhlthau. The system´s perspective assumes a partial view of information-seeking process, focusing primarily on transactions between the user and the system or between the user and information. Three types of studies are described: studies of the use of information resources, demand studies and studies of the information use. Both perspectives are complementary and provide sufficient information for planning both for the evaluation of appropriate information systems

Se exponen las principales perspectivas en el estudio del comportamiento informacional: la perspectiva del usuario y la del sistema. En el primer caso, se asume una visión global del proceso de búsqueda de información y se desarrollan modelos teóricos y metodológicos para guiar la investigación en este campo. Se presentan como ejemplo la teoría del Sense-Making de Brenda Dervin y el modelo de Proceso de Búsqueda de Información de Carol Kuhlthau. En el segundo caso, se asume una perspectiva parcial del proceso de búsqueda de información, centrándose fundamentalmente en las transacciones entre usuario y el sistema o entre el usuario y la información. Se describen los estudios del uso de recursos o fuentes de información, los de uso de sistemas o demanda y los estudios del uso de la información. Ambas perspectiva no deben considerarse contrapuestas sino complementarias para ofrecer información suficiente tanto para la planificación como para la evaluación de sistemas de información adecuados a los usuarios de dichos sistemas.
