English abstract

Gabriela Mistral prominent Chilean Nobel Prize for Literature, was a poet, diplomat and teacher. During her lifetime she was linked to education, the world of books, reading and the creation of public libraries. In her work and intellectual legacy, she conceived the book as the primary means of enabling the cultural boom in Latin America; the Library as the hub of this development and essential complement to traditional education; the Librarian, as the principal agent to develop reading, who should provide enjoyment for knowledge through free reading and direct contact with the book, being the professional that complements the work of the teacher

Spanish abstract

Gabriela Mistral destacada Premio Nóbel de Literatura Chilena, fue poetiza, diplomática y maestra. Durante su vida estuvo ligada a la enseñanza, al mundo de los libros, la lectura y en la creación de bibliotecas populares. En su obra y legado intelectual, concibe al Libro como el medio fundamental que permitirá el auge cultural en Latinoamérica, a la Biblioteca como el eje de este desarrollo y complemento fundamental de la educación tradicional, al Bibliotecario, como el principal agente del fomento lector, quien debe otorgar el goce por el conocimiento mediante la lectura libre y el contacto directo con el libro, siendo el profesional que complementa la labor del profesor.
