English abstract

Questions about the economic value of libraries are asked more frequently. This means, that libraries are increasingly under pressure to present their results in economic performance figures. In professional literature more articles about this subject are published but without consistent terminology. This bachelor thesis gives an overview of the state of the research and presents chosen economic added value calculations of libraries. Based on this theoretical part, a calculation of the added value for two services of the University Library of Lucerne (Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek Luzern) is made. First the annual value of the borrowed media items is estimated and set into a cost-benefit ratio. Furthermore, a possible indirect economic value of the use of libraries is presented with the help of a user survey. By applying the contingent valuation method, the monetary value of the reading room is estimated. This value is also used in a cost-benefit ratio. This bachelor thesis shows the chances and possibilities but also the problems and limitations of the calculation of the economic added value for libraries.

German abstract

Immer häufiger werden Fragen über den ökonomischen Wert von Bibliotheken gestellt. Dadurch stehen Bibliotheken heute zunehmend unter dem Druck, ihre Ergebnisse in betriebswirtschaftlichen Kennzahlen darzulegen. In der Fachliteratur erscheinen vermehrt Artikel zu diesem Thema, jedoch ohne einheitlichen Umgang mit der Terminologie. Diese Bachelorarbeit bietet zunächst einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung und stellt ausgewählte ökonomische Mehrwertrechnungen anderer Bibliotheken vor. Auf diesem Theorieteil aufbauend wird eine ökonomische Mehrwertrechnung für zwei Dienste der Zentral- und Hochschulbibliothek Luzern durchgeführt. Als erstes wird der jährliche Wert der ausgeliehenen Medien geschätzt und in ein Kosten-Nutzen-Verhältnis gesetzt. Nachfolgend wird mit einer Benutzerbefragung ein allfälliger indirekter wirtschaftlicher Nutzen aus der Bibliotheksbenutzung aufgezeigt, sowie der monetäre Wert des Lesesaals als Lernort mit der Contingent Valuation-Methode geschätzt. Auch dieser Wert wird in ein Kosten-Nutzen-Verhältnis gesetzt. Die Arbeit zeigt die Chancen und Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Probleme und Grenzen der ökonomischen Mehrwertrechnung für Bibliotheken auf.
