English abstract

This paper (“Development of especialized digital collections”) reflects on the responsibilities of the professionals of information of specialized digital collections, since the grand explosion of electronic resources; they have the difficult task to select between those resources that must be contracted in electronic format and those that must be kept in printed format. It comprises themes such as the durability and preservation of information; editorial volatibility and price models, and at the same time, the optimization of financial resources, in a worldwide environment where electronic resources are more and more expensive. It briefly explains some of the great challenges that the information professional faces within this context, such as: to assure content quality; to extend the offer in concrete thematic areas; to extend the offer in local languages; to guarantee retrospective access to digital collections; to integrate all the resources into a single tool; to optimize the use of financial resources in function of the price/content relationship; to support the Open Access initiatives; to optimize technological investment; to increase the number of users; to guarantee the right of authors, and to consider the new forms of electronic communication.

Spanish abstract

El trabajo reflexiona sobre la responsabilidad de los profesionales de la información en el desarrollo de colecciones digitales especializadas, toda vez que con la gran explosión de recursos electrónicos, a ellos les corresponde la difícil tarea de seleccionar entre aquellos recursos que deben contratarse en formato electrónico y los que deben mantenerse en formato impreso. Considerando temas tales como la perdurabilidad y preservación de la información, la volatilidad editorial y modelos de precios y, al mismo tiempo, la optimización de los recursos económicos, en un entorno mundial en el que cada vez son más costosos los recursos electrónicos. Se desarrollan brevemente algunos de los grandes retos para el profesional de la información en este contexto, tales como: asegurar la calidad de contenido, ampliar la oferta en áreas temáticas concretas, ampliar la oferta en idiomas locales, garantizar el acceso retrospectivo a las colecciones digitales, integrar todos los recursos en una sola herramienta, optimizar el uso de recursos económicos en función de la relación precio/contenido, apoyar las iniciativas de acceso libre (open access), optimizar la inversión tecnológica, aumentar el número de usuarios, garantizar el respeto a los derechos de autor y atender a las nuevas formas de comunicación electrónica.
