English abstract
A study of scholarly communication, based upon written interviews with historians of colonial Brazil located in this country. It investigates the use of digitized rare books for the production of knowledge from 1995 to 2009, which corresponds to the first fifteen years of digitization projects in libraries, both research libraries and others. The goal of the present study was to verify to what extent the digitized rare books on the internet are part of the Historian´s scholarly communication process at the moment in Brazil and a possible impact factor on his research. It investigates the open access to information movement, going back to the seventeenth century, and considers the issue of the so-called "two cultures" in the sciences and the humanities. Responses create a profile of the historians studied, the use of printed and digitized collections, use of technology, aspects of the flow of information during the research process, and their knowledge of the open access movement. Among other findings, results showed that historians of colonial Brazil in this country extensively use technologies and do not feel pressured by them; find more barriers in using printed rare books than digitized rare books on the internet, but they are well aware that the digitized book does not substitute for the original printed copy. Access to digitized rare books was an impact factor on research and results may point to a possible threat to the printed book as the main tool for those historians. The majority is in favor to the Open Access Movement.

Análise da Comunicação Científica e da produção do conhecimento de historiadores de Brasil Colonial a partir do uso de livros raros digitalizados na internet de 1995 a 2009, período correspondente aos primeiros quinze anos dos projetos de digitalização de acervo raro em instituições de pesquisa. O objetivo da presente pesquisa é verificar em que medida os livros raros na internet são parte do processo de comunicação dos historiadores neste momento no Brasil e o impacto por esses causado na pesquisa. Aborda a questão do acesso livre à informação científica por meio de uma síntese histórica que remonta ao século XVII e analisa as “duas culturas” associadas às Ciências Naturais e as Humanas. Historiadores de Brasil Colonial são retratados em seu perfil; uso de coleção impressa e digitalizada; uso de tecnologia de informação e possíveis barreiras; tendências para a área; se fontes eletrônicas são citadas em suas pesquisas; fluxo da informação durante a pesquisa e conhecimento do Movimento de Acesso Livre à Informação Científica. Alguns resultados demonstraram que esse historiador faz uso de tecnologias e, em geral, não se sente pressionado por essas; encontra mais barreiras no uso de livros raros impressos do que no uso de livros raros digitalizados na internet, mas este último não substitui o impresso. O acesso ao livro raro digitalizado causou impacto na pesquisa e pode haver ameaça da soberania da monografia impressa como principal instrumento de disseminação da informação desses historiadores. A maioria é a favor do Movimento de Acesso Livre à Informação Científica.
