English abstract

Ethics can be considered a reflection about the principles and laws which lead the human conduct and has its centre point in the values which are principles of morality devoted to specific conducts. Considering that such a few studies on information ethics are devoted to knowledge organization and representation (KOR) it intends. To identify, conceptualize and classify the ethical values that can be considered in KOR activities. For that, the theoretical approaches of Hudon, 1997, García Gutiérrez, 1998, 2002, Beghtol, 2002, 2005, Van der Walt, 2004, Thellefsen; Thellefsen, 2004 and Bair, 2005 were analyzed in order to obtain a systematization of ethical values and problems in KOR. The results showed that the predominant ethical values are: cultural hospitality, cultural warrant, fidelity of information representation / labeling, record updating and cooperation, multilinguism (as a reflex of multiculturalim), social and professional responsibility in information representation and respect to the logics of knowledge domains. It was also observed that the denying of such values lead to ethical problems like: bias, inaccuracies, omissions, prejudices, censorship, literal translations, lack of systematizion, as well as the belief on the neutrality and universality of KOR processes, products and tools.

Spanish abstract

La ética, como reflexión sobre los principios y reglas de la conducta humana, se ocupa de forma preferente de los valores, que remiten a la idea de los valores universales (los imperativos categóricos) de la ética kantiana, en cuanto principios de moralidad orientadores de conductas. En el ámbito de las actividades informativas se observan pocos estudios acerca de los aspectos éticos en organización y representación del conocimiento (ORC) de modo que, ampliando estudios anteriores (Fernández-Molina; Guimarães, 2002, Guimarães; Fernández-Molina, 2003, Guimarães et al., 2005), se pretende identificar, conceptuar y categorizar, a partir de la bibliografía internacional, los valores éticos que puedan ser considerados en ORC, dada su naturaleza mediadora entre la información y el usuario. Para eso, se analizan los estudios teóricos de Hudon, 1997, García Gutiérrez, 1998, 2002, Beghtol, 2002, 2005, Van der Walt, 2004, Thellefsen; Thellefsen, 2004 y Bair, 2005 hasta llegar a una sistematización de valores y problemas éticos. Se ha verificado que los valores predominantes son: hospitalidad cultural, garantía cultural/transculturalidad en la mediación, fidelidad de la representación/etiquetado de la información, actualización y cooperación de los registros, multilingüismo (como reflejo del multiculturalismo), responsabilidad social y profesional por la representación, y respeto a la lógica del dominio del conocimiento; y que la negación de tales valores genera problemas éticos como: sesgos, imprecisiones, omisiones, prejuicios, censura, traducciones literales, falta de sistematización, creencia en la neutralidad y en el universalismo absoluto de los procesos, productos e instrumentos de ORC.
