English abstract

The objective of the study is to expand knowledge regarding aspects related to behavior when using databases, for alumni that found themselves working towards a masters or doctoral thesis at the College of Mexico (seria mejor usa el nombre aqui). The study bases itself on the Information Seeking Process(ISP) model proposed by Kuhlthau. The model consists of 6 phases> initiation, selection, exploration, formulation, collection and presentation. The models 6 states incorporate three branches, or axis of the experiences: affection (feelings/emotions), cognitive (thoughts), and physical (actions). The model develops 3 instruments to investigate knowledge of databases and the skills and attitude that students apply when using them. Using the results obtained it is possible to observe subjective aspects that are involved in the selection and use of databases. It is evident that the (iteractiva como interactiva en ingles interactive o iterativa en ingles iterative) nature of information searching where users of information attending the need for information take steps, return over the same steps or skip steps, depending on a diverse group of factors like knowledge prior abilities that a user may have when using databases. Furthermore it has been verified that natural need for information determines significantly the selection of the source to investigate, and the use of those sources

Spanish abstract

El presente estudio, tiene como objetivo ampliar el conocimiento sobre algunos aspectos relacionados con el comportamiento en el uso de las bases de datos, de los alumnos que se encuentran realizando tesis de grado en maestría y doctorado de El Colegio de México. El estudio toma como base el modelo Information Seeking Process [ISP] propuesto por Kuhlthau. El modelo consiste en seis etapas: iniciación, selección, exploración, formulación, colección y presentación. Los seis estados del modelo incorporan tres ramales o ejes de las experiencias: afectivas (sentimientos), cognitivas (pensamientos) y físicas (acciones). A partir del modelo se desarrollan tres instrumentos para investigar sobre el conocimiento de las bases de datos, las destrezas y las actitudes de los estudiantes en el uso de las mismas. A través de los resultados obtenidos es posible observar aspectos subjetivos que están involucrados en la selección y uso de bases de datos. Se evidencia la naturaleza iteractiva de las búsquedas de información en las que los usuarios de la información en atención a una necesidad de información realizan pasos, se regresan sobre los mismos o los saltan, esto dependerá de diversos factores tales como los conocimientos o habilidades previas que tenga el usuario en el uso de las bases de datos. También se constata que la naturaleza de la necesidad de información, determinará significativamente en la selección de las fuentes a investigar, así como el uso que se les da a las mismas.
