English abstract

Libraries, based on their collection development policies, collect geographic information, organize geographic collections and provide GIS services, in order to increase effectiveness in dealing with the needs of their users. Since the purpose of this article is to highlight the use of GIS as a "tool" in libraries and information services, we investigated the provided services regarding geographical collections that have been developed by academic libraries worldwide. Greek academic libraries will be mentioned as well. Our research processed the websites of academic libraries all over the world which maintain geospatial collections and the number of GIS services they offer for the effective use of their collections was considered. Despite of the fact that for most libraries the term "GIS services" includes access to geographic information systems or to geo-referenced information provided by the library, in the present study the term is extended and refers to three factors: user education, technological infrastructure, and remote access. As international literature indicates, the above three factors play a significant role in an integrated and efficient access to and use of GIS that library provide. Our results are compared to those of other studies and demonstrate firstly that libraries recognise the continuous increasing needs of their users and secondly that most libraries adapt to fulfill those needs. Furthermore, based on the insights garnered the research emphasizes the importance of policies in the development of geospatial collections.

Οι βιβλιοθήκες βάσει των πολιτικών ανάπτυξης συλλογών που έχουν προσδιορίσει και ακολουθούν, συλλέγουν γεωγραφική πληροφορία και οργανώνουν γεωγραφικές συλλογές προσφέροντας πρόσβαση σε αυτές μέσω υπηρεσιών GIS, τις οποίες η κάθε βιβλιοθήκη αναπτύσσει βασισμένη σε προσεκτικό σχεδιασμό για την κάλυψη των αναγκών των χρηστών της. Σκοπός του συγκεκριμένου άρθρου, είναι να αναδείξει την χρήση των GIS ως εργαλείου στις υπηρεσίες πληροφόρησης των βιβλιοθηκών, καταγράφοντας τις υπηρεσίες που έχουν αναπτυχθεί από ακαδημαϊκές βιβλιοθήκες του εξωτερικού, ενώ θα αναφερθεί και η κατάσταση στις ελληνικές ακαδημαϊκές βιβλιοθήκες. Μέσω έρευνας που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις ιστοσελίδες ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών ανά τον κόσμο οι οποίες διατηρούν γεωχωρικές συλλογές, καταγράφηκε πόσες από αυτές προσφέρουν υπηρεσίες GIS για την αποτελεσματική χρήση των συλλογών τους. Για τις περισσότερες βιβλιοθήκες ο όρος «υπηρεσίες GIS» περιλαμβάνει την πρόσβαση σε πληροφοριακά γεωγραφικά συστήματα ή την γεωαναφερόμενη πληροφορία που παρέχει η Βιβλιοθήκη. Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας μελέτης ο όρος αυτός αναφέρεται σε τρεις παράγοντες: την εκπαίδευση χρηστών, την τεχνολογική υποδομή, και την απομακρυσμένη πρόσβαση που πιστεύουμε, συνεπικουρούμενοι από τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, πως παίζουν καθοριστικό ρόλο στην ολοκληρωμένη και αποτελεσματική πρόσβαση και χρήση των συλλογών GIS που συγκεντρώνουν οι βιβλιοθήκες. Τα αποτελέσματά μας συγκρίνονται με αυτά άλλων ερευνών και καταδεικνύουν την προσαρμογή των βιβλιοθηκών στις απαιτήσεις των χρηστών τους και την αναγνώριση των συνεχώς αυξανόμενων αναγκών τους ενώ τονίζεται και η σημασία των πολιτικών στην ανάπτυξη των γεωχωρικών συλλογών.
