English abstract

After many years of the traditional books' resistance to their replacement with some electronic equivalent, new generation devices - e-readers that use e-paper - have appeared on the scene and for many users they can now become an alternative to print. In order to demonstrate the potential of these devices, as well as the influence of their increasing popularity on the future of printed books, the author presents the results of two studies of e-readers from 2008. The participants in the first study, which was carried out by the author himself, included students, librarians and academic staff of the Silesian University, while those in the second study included librarians and academic staff of the University of Texas. The conclusions from both studies complement each other and enable the author to take a broader view of the subject.

Polish abstract

W pierwszym, przeprowadzonym przez autora, uczestniczyli studenci, bibliotekarze i pracownicy naukowi Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, w drugim bibliotekarze i pracownicy naukowi Uniwersytetu Teksańskiego. Wnioski z obu badań uzupełniają się wzajemnie i pozwalają objąć poruszaną problematykę szerszym spojrzeniem.
