English abstract

The role of social media can be hardly underestimated, according to Nielsen research, social networks and blogs estimate for 22 % time spent online in US. And other countries are following the trend with the so called third world closing the gap faster than we have anticipated (e.g. The Philippines being the most “social” nation in the world with 95 % of internet users use social networks). Still, we don't have yet many services that would help us to work with the extremely large sets of data. In my paper I would like to introduce some of the local and international tools aimed at social media monitoring, including Ataxo Social Insider (which has been developed in cooperation with UISK FF UK's New Media Studies program). I will present possible methods of using these tools for both academic and commercial research and some of the outputs we already prepared along with fresh statistics on Czech and Slovak social networks usage. I would also like to discuss the situation in other CEE countries and similarities / differences between them in the way social media is perceived and used.
