English abstract

This article examines what has been the process followed during the second half of the eighties and early nineties, to carry out the project of automation of the network of Spanish State Public Libraries. The role played by the Coordination Center Library, the Provincial Coordinating Centers and Public Libraries themselves are evaluated. The paper also highlights the critical presence that has taken the National Library in the development of the project. A number of hits and errors in the course of the work carried out are listed. Finally, some considerations about the future possibilities of the automation project are presented.

Spanish abstract

En este artículo se analiza cuál ha sido el proceso seguido, durante la segunda mitad de los ochenta y principios de los noventa, para llevar a cabo el proyecto de informatización de la red de Bibliotecas Públicas del Estado. Se examina el papel que han jugado el Centro de Coordinación Bibliotecaria, los Centros Coordinadores Provinciales y las propias Bibliotecas Públicas. Así mismo se destaca la decisiva presencia que ha tenido la Biblioteca Nacional en el desarrollo del proyecto. Se enumeran una serie de aciertos y errores detectados en el curso de los trabajos realizados, dividiendo para ello el proyecto en tres fases. Por último, se incluyen unas consideraciones sobre las futuras posibilidades del plan de mecanización.
